I have issues with the Quote button. It qoutes just the main (first) post of the thread, disregarding what comment I'm replying to. In some cases it works, but I can't understand clearly why&when it happens.
I've just noticed that the quoting works properly when there are already some replies to other comments.
upd. Windows 10, Opera browser (if it matters)

It is not a bug, Ivan, it's intentional. You tagged your post here as a bug, which it is not.
BUGS & IDEAS are unthreaded by design. I assume it's to ensure compatibility with Adobe Employee's internal tracking systems.
Unthreaded topics give topmost priority to the original post which is what the quoting system is based on. Long story short, I don't expect this to change unless they decide to change BUGS & IDEAS to a threaded system which probably won't happen.

about how often do you see the problem when there are no replies? (and just to be explicit no reply message are the only ones where you sometimes see a quote problem.)

50/50
in some topics it works, in others doesn't

ok. testing...

i tested on 10 threads (including yours when i was crafting my first reponse). it worked find on all 10. that should occur less than 1/1000 for a 50-50 test.
now, for most of them, i clicked reply, clicked the quote icon, checked to see if everything was quoted and then i cancelled. ie, for most, i did not click post and then inspect so i don't know if that makes a difference. i did click post for a few of them and saw problem when doing that, but my test for that was not as thorough.

I get this when I'm replying even here

oh wait. i completely misunderstood the issue you're seeing.
and i do see what you're seeing and it is a bug: when replying to any post in a thread, using the quote causes the initial post to be quoted, not the post to which you're replying
and there's more info to supply about this. i'm trying to track the issue better because i (just like you mentioned) see the quote working on some threads, but not when i reply to any post in this thread.

! that's what I'm talking about

ok, i have more info. when clicking the reply button, the reply field opens directly beneath the post that will be quoted. ie, if the reply window opens beneath the initial post and you click the quote icon, the initial post will be quoted.
if the reply window opens in the "correct" location (directly beneath the message to which one is replying), the quote will work "correctly" and quote the correct message.
bottomline 1: the reply window doesn't always open in the correct location. this is a recent change that i've noticed for about 1 week. because i almost never use the quote icon, i didn't think much of it.
bottomline 2: i think it's related to the thread. ie, in some threads, the reply window opens in the correct location for all posts in that thread. in other threads (eg, this one), the reply window opens beneath the initial post.

As a datapoint, copying and pasting text from one of the comments into a reply, then selecting the text and clicking Quote has the same result. The pasted text is replaced by the first post in the thread. I was expecting the selected text to format as a quote, although not necessarily with the poster's name and date/timestamp.

It happens in any thread, as far as I recall. I'm in a meeting now but I can try testing it afterwards.

i don't see that problem: i see the selected text pasted from the op is replaced by the text in the message above the reply.

When you need to tag someone, type the @ symbol and then choose or type the name of the user.

@jane-e, thanks for that bit of information. I did not know that Bugs and Ideas didn't get threaded and that all replies were to the original poster.

You're welcome, KGlad and Lin Sims! In addition, you can edit the HTML code before posting to simulate a reply in Bugs and Ideas. 😊

@jane-e, kglad made 8 comments already, if I just tag, how anyone guess what exact comment I'm replying to? to me that's a bug 🙂 you "cheated" with the code, but it's an extra time-consuming step

A second thing I do is to copy and paste a relevant line. It take less time than clicking quote and then deleting most of a very long post that includes several pictures.

That is normal and expected behavior in unthreaded boards like BUGS & IDEAS where the first post has top priority.
You can copy & paste content or the person's screen name from the post you're replying to. However, BUGS and IDEAS are primarily used by Adobe employees. They're not meant for elaborate discussions. If you want to carry on a discussion, use the Discussion boards instead. Use BUGS & IDEAS sparingly for reporting purposes only.

I see no reason to cut down the functionality in any part of the forum.
p.s. smb has moved the topic to Discussions to "fix" the issue? LOL

i can see why this should have been removed from the "bug" forum, but i guess someone didn't think this qualified as an "idea'. not sure i agree with that.
