I confess I have never tried the e-mail route to read and answer forum questions. So I am wondering what happens if a response is made, the person gets it by e-mail. and then the person making the response goes back in an edits their answer. Does the person get just the original response, or do they now get another e-mail with the edited version?
This can make a huge difference as sometimes the response is altered due to the "oh crap, I read the OP message wrong" syndrome, or the "oh crap, why did I say that" syndrome.

Email notifications are send out when a message is created, not when
messages are changed.

So the answer I see is No they do not get
the edited message, only the original message.

That is correct.
Edit: since you cannot edit the original message in the user's mailbox, only the actual forum topic will show the updated post.

And I understand that posts gathe
red by Google and the like also do not reflect later edits...

Oh great! If the edits do not show on
e-mail then the usefulness of the e-mail sy
stem is broken.
Guess that builds on my disgust of the e-mail system for Forum reading and responses.
