Still no supervision in the French and Spanish forums?

I forgot that threads are extremely short lived in this forum, and the discussion that really began within an unrelated thread, here

Pierre Courtejoie, "Shouldn't these links be removed as soon as possible?" #8, 27 Feb 2005 1:21 pm

has already gone to the Archives, where it is in danger of going to the limbus in the near future.

I still think that this is an important issue, and still wait to see any improvement in those forums showing that the messages by Pierre and myself on the subject have not fallen in a void. Although we both value and thank Neil Keller for his attempts to get some reaction in higher quarters, his attempts have unfortunately been a failure.

It is pathetic to see pages in the forums in Spanish with templates that are written in a mixture of English and a very bad Spanish. It is even more pathetic that JC stopped more than a year ago feeling authorized to introduce any non trivial change to improve this situation. The worst part is however to feel that there is no one listening, or at least willing to admit that there might be problems in those forums.

I feel very disappointed.

Supervision has to be made in the French and Spanish forums. If the threads are extremely short lived in this forum then without a modification it cannot be improved. So we have to wait and see for its future results.

Now that we have lost the spammer support, here is something not translated into Spanish, http://www.ppo.bugge.com/; there is something about it in French, though, http://www.eppoa.org/docs/PRESS_RELEASE_EPPOA_29.05.2008_fr.htm; the one that should translate it into Spanish is on maternity leave.

Claudio,

It seems that there are important and intriguing differences in the expression of uncomfortableness in different languages.

In English, any actual blame/shame is put on others, as in thanks to XXX, shame on XXX, or expressed more woolly, as in it is a great shame.

Or the feeling is expressed as a suitable degree of regret, sorrow, or grief, which is no more an acknowledgement of being to blame than is the Spanish way.

I post here to keep that other thread clear.

Hi Jacob,

Our off topic messages help in keeping this thread alive, now that it seems it is not even sure if the Spanish forums will survive the impending fusion.

I think I do not fully agree with you. I think that sentences like "I feel ashamed for my rudeness" are completely equivalent to "Me avergüenzo de haber sido descortés". However, this is not the place to discuss such matters, and we are running the risk of having this thread made read only... 🙂 Which would be a pity, because I think it deserves to be kept for historical reasons.

Well, this autumn and winter are being somewhat atypical. We have had just a couple of frosty days so far in Santiago, but temperatures have not raised along the day as they usually do, so it feels cold. And rains have been scarce but very intense, so the water fallen is above average. And as the minimum temperatures have not been very low, there is little snow in the mountains.

And how is your summer going?

It has been hot and dry, so the lawn is full of yellow hawkweed, opening their flowers to the sun in the morning and closing them again in the afternoon.

And now that the early harvest has begun, so has the rain, and it is cooler under the clouds.

Sorry, Jacob, but I don't understand your last two messages. As far as I know, this thread has not been near any abyss in the recent past. Are you talking of something else?

Claudio, I am. About a month ago, the old C drive died; before that there were issues with the D drive, and it had become impossible to burn backups. Since then, multiple attempts to start up on new drives and get everything out of the old ones. Post #357 was the first thing I did on my first time back on the forums. Now everything is fine, with images of the entire C new drive on the new D drive, and only a few things to get out of the old C drive, which requires its going to a deep freezer for a while.

Jacob,

Neil, Jacob posts here mostly to help in keeping this thread afloat. Specially now that nobody seems to know, or be willing to say, if the forums in Spanish will be kept or abandoned when the big fusion finally comes. In the last attempt they were left in the limbo, and we only got them back when we recovered the old forums.

I at least don't feel at all encouraged to propose improvements to forums that, for all I know, may disappear tomorrow.

Well, the fusion is still not a reality... Is there a status of the upcoming fusion somewhere? A deadline?

Thanks, Jacob and Claudio...

Is this thread reviving, or is this just a sudden and short lived spurt of activity?

Pierre, we hadn't seen you around here for quite some time. The forums in Spanish are just managing to survive. Are things any better in the French side?

Yes, I fixed a house, takes quite some time off from forums posting ;)

There is not a lot of activity in the FR forum; mostly elements questions about lost databases, or database transition problems from one version to the other. Since there is no knowledgeable elements members, there is not so much activity. Maybe, if the forums were structured differently, had moderators, FAQs, it would help spin the wheel... Don't I have a déjà vu feeling?

It strikes me that anybody approaching " knowledgeable" status in Elements would promptly abandon the program. 😕 But then, what do I know
