P: Photoshop v26.9 & 26.10 crash when opening JPEG on Windows

Hello, I have a problem with Photoshop: the software systematically crashes as soon as I try to import a JPG file. I've already tried several solutions: Uninstall and reinstall Photoshop, Uninstall Adobe Creative Cloud, Update my graphics drivers, Check my system compatibility (everything is indicated as compatible). Unfortunately, nothing works. Could this problem be with Adobe, or is there another avenue to explore?

This is very much a Photoshop issue as none of my other applications are having this problem. All my drivers are up to date and the suggestion of turning off Intel integrated graphics is a non-starter as a lot of application lean on that for the GUI among other things. Since Adobe hasn't offered a patch or an update to fix the issue, my workflow is now opening JPG files in Gimp and then copy/pasting them into Photoshop. Seems kind of silly that one would have to use an open source graphics app to supplement basic functionality of a commercial program, and yet here we are.

It started like 2 weeks ago. Tried an older version, reinstalling, eveything possible and that I could think of.
Every time I drag and drop/try to import an image (.jpg/.png/other formats) the software freezes and crashes. Older projects can be changed, but no images can be added as well, tha same problem happens. I have no idea what to do... 2 weeks already without being able to start a new project.
GPU firmware already updated.

If that doesn't help, can you post your Photoshop system info, in Photoshop go to Help > System Info, hit the copy button and paste the entire thing into this thread

Along with the details asked by Ged_Traynor, could you also please share a screenshot or a screen recording of the issue? It'd be helpful to see if an error message appears when this happens.

Please try these in order and try importing after each if resetting preferences doesn't work:

1) Go to Edit > Preferences > Performance, click Advanced Settings, and uncheck "GPU Compositing".

2) Go to Edit > Preferences > Performance, uncheck Use Graphics Processor, and restart Photoshop.

3) Go to Edit > Preferences > Performance, uncheck Multithreaded Compositing, and restart Photoshop.

Photoshop crashes when opening anything but Photoshop documents. Tested TIFFs and JPEGs. No fonts in documents tested. Tested multiple files that will open with other apps (GIMP). Win 11 machine. Photoshop will open native Photoshop documents just fine. Did the following troubleshooting with no effect:

Rebooted multiple times with each change.

Made sure Photoshop was updated. It was.

Updated GPU drivers

Allocated more RAM for use

Allocated more scratch disks

Disabled graphics processor

Disabled plugins

Reset preferences

Uninstalled/Reinstalled

Tried 3 other older versions

Current workaround is to upload TIFF to web based Photoshop and download it as a Ps doc to edit.

In the meantime, may I ask if this started previously? I see you mentioned you tested previous versions and still see the issue, but did this just start happening?

Hey CM,
It's been a week or two since I opened a TIFF file so I can't really
pinpoint when this might have started happening. Been doing a lot of work
in Illustrator so I was a bit taken aback when this started happening on
Tuesday, the 2nd. No error message. Ps just crashes and closes. I did get
it to start generating and sending crash reports during my troubleshooting
process.
I got the email on trying to disable Tiff and Jpeg support in the Camera
Raw Settings and replied that it actually crashed Ps when I clicked on the
box. Interesting. Replied with a crash report to that email. Thanks for all
the help!

Hello,

I am facing a lot of trouble with Photoshop recently, every time i drag n drop or import any image file, it crashes. I have tried disabling GPU, changing scratch disk, completely removing creative cloud and reinstalling PS, tried previous 3 versions 26.8....till the latest one.

None of it works. And it is really frustrating, since i have deadlines to meet and i cannot accomplish anything at the moment please guide me. Its really Urgent.

Can you open these files in the standard way? (File > Open, or double-click in the file browser).

Drag and drop, and the Place command, both create smart objects. If that fails, that could perhaps narrow the problem down.

Also, please post the full Help > System Info from Photoshop. Just paste into a reply.

Based on all my crash reports, ChatGPT concluded the root cause was the same, and my issue was resolved after I followed these steps.

all three crash reports point to the same root cause: Photoshop is crashing while initializing DirectX 12 through the Intel UHD Graphics driver. In the stacks you shared, the crash happens in OpenAdapter12 → D3D12GetInterface, with the Intel DX12 module (igd12umd64.dll) involved. You also have an NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super, but the Intel driver is very old (2020) and is conflicting, which is why it crashes whether you’re using Harmonize or simply opening/dropping a JPG.

Quick fix (try in this order):

Force Photoshop to use the NVIDIA GPU only
Windows Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Browse/Add Photoshop.exe → Options → choose High performance (NVIDIA) → Save → restart Photoshop.
Update (or temporarily disable) the Intel UHD driver
- Prefer: install the latest Intel DCH driver from Intel/OEM (your current is 26.20.100.7985, which is very old).
- If you can’t update right now: Device Manager → Display adapters → Intel(R) UHD Graphics → right-click Disable device (test), then re-enable after you’ve updated.
Turn off/limit GPU in Photoshop (to confirm the cause)
Photoshop → Edit → Preferences → Performance → uncheck “Use Graphics Processor” (or click Advanced Settings… and set Drawing Mode to Basic) → restart Photoshop.
If crashes stop, it’s a GPU/driver issue for sure.
Remove virtual/ghost display drivers
Your system shows “LuminonCore IDDCX Adapter” (a virtual display). Uninstall/disable any virtual monitor/remote display apps that installed this, then reboot. These often break DX12 adapter selection.
(Optional) Driver hygiene
Update to the NVIDIA Studio Driver, and keep Photoshop up to date.

That should resolve it in most cases. If it still crashes after steps 1–4, let me know which steps you tried and we’ll dig deeper.

I am trying to open files in Photoshop and when I do, I get the hourglass then Photoshop closes on me. I didn't have any issues a few days ago, it just started today.

I am having the same issue you replied to in the previous post. Everytime I try to open or drag & drop a pic PS 2025 crashes I installed this today. I also tried the same thing in the 2025 beta version, same issues. I copied the crash report, see below.

I have win 11 and just installed PS 2025. I am having the same issue, it crashes when I try to upload or open a file. I need this for my classes, can anyone assist?

Bonjour,

Depuis hier Photoshop 26.10 plante à chaque ouverture de fichier (jpg, png, ou tiff).

Sous Windows 11, Asus ROG Strix G.
Extremenent handicapant... Bien sur, ça arrive au milieu d'une deadline de rendu de projet.

(Indesign, Illustrator fonctionnent eux correctement)

J'arrive encore à ouvrir les fichiers psd, même lourds.

J'ai tenté d'installer la version précédente, même problème.
J'ai tenté de modifier les préférences, d'alouer plus de RAM, d'annuler l'utilisation de la carte graphique, de mettre à jour le pilote de la carte graphique, toujours pas d'amélioration.

Je ne sais plus quoi faire!
