I have had an issue with slowly opening and closing audio files in Audition since last fall. The software locks during closing files consistently (every time used) and has to be forced to close. so to confirm. the signal to the amp needs to be already dolby or dts encoded for it to work. Therefore outputting what is coming out of the DAW to monitor will not work connected to the surround amp. I would will need to add 3 matching powered studio monitors plus a sub. I contacted Focusrite support to Confirm setup in their control software. Also, the multichannel processing in the receiver requires PCM audio for processing as with connecting the multichannel outputs from a DVD play. Therefore may not even work with the 18i20 since it is  line level output? ... View more

Think I got the plugin to work in a 5.1 multitrack session. Track 1 is the stereo track. Added the plugin to the master track and exported 5.1. mapped fine. pretty slick. now the next challenge is to monitor the 6 channels. Just had the Focusrite 18i20 delivered. Please review and advise/finalize the input and output settings. input ??? (for 5.1) 1 L 2 R 3 C 4 LFE 5 LS 6 RS Output want to use two 8" JBL monitors to monitor stereo L and R only  and a separate system for monitoring the 5.1 surround. Outputs 3-10 from the 18i20 to the preamp into multichannel inputs to the surround sound system (which has more power and better speakers to get the volume I need). or will audition not play well this way and use 3 more 8" studio monitors plus sub. On the 18i20 can mute the monitors when playing back 5.1 for example 1 stereo monitor 2 stereo monitor 3 L 4 R 5 C 6 LFE 9 LS 10 RS the Focus rite manual skips  7-8 for 5.1. should I use the 7-8 instead? thanks rick ... my sound card will only in/out 2 channels so would need to purchase am interface. would the Focusrite Scarlette 18i20 be ok or would you suggest another to use for ins and output monitor to the 6 speakes. The volume control function works the way it should till it gets to a certain resolution. past a certain resolution the wave amplitude does not follow the wheel. Works - move wheel to the left amplitude goes down appropriate amount following the wheel reading. Does not work past a certain resolution. move wheel to the left. wave does not change with the dial. let go at -1.2 db for example and  the display changes -1.2 db. this did not happen in previous versions. used it a lot during  editing Mouse and usb drivers update to date Replaced mouse batteries. I use har-bal 3.7 eq software and perform a simple eq match to either a pro recording or a decent sounding audience recording in my library of the artist. I use the entire performance instead of eq ing  individual songs which created an average of the audio spectrum. match the volumes for both sources so the frequency spectrum lies on top of each other. then match the crappy sounding spectrum to the reference using the different curser movements. eq the mid channel which automatically eqs left right and sides improving stereo image. many doubt the use of eq match. but you need to know what you are doing as always. Where do I Normalize to 0 DB is the question ??? The main point of the discussion was where to stick the normalization step since I never normalized before. Instead of normalizing at the first step, I volume matched to -6 db. before I began processing. Initial Volume adjustment Equalize Attenuate clap spikes if and where necessary (Think it is best to address the spikes before compression since the spike level is typically way above the music level peaks and would make normalizing less "accurate" for compression) place Normalize to 0 DB here prior to compression? (or do not normalize at all) Compression Quality control. Maximize volume convert to 16 bit Dither It seems logical now to normalize based on the discussions just before the compression step. Or should I not bother to normalize here is the ultimate question. please review and advise. Want to get this normalization step right confidently. I am concerned that I did things wrong for years. Thanks for the input The recordings are not soundboard but from a portable recorder and external mics. My goal is to get a crappy sounding audience recording to sound closer to pro recorded audio Software used are Audition cc latest version Har-bal 3.7 for equalizing and eq match Ozone 8 RX6 Original workflow (close to suggested by Izotope literature and tutorials. They never mention Normalization which created my conflict while researching) Match Volume to about -6 db  Equalize Attenuate clap spikes if and where necessary Compression if necessary Quality control. Maximize volume convert to 16 bit Dither proposed workflow with compression (only if compression is necessary. I became frustrated and use it to "reverse" the effects of the volume wars.
