Hi, I just wanted to ask whether I've done something wrong with my file. I have couple of boxes that I have copied and pasted so should have the same line weight. I converted my file to PDF at 100%, the line is darker at the bottom. At 75%, the same boxes have different line width: And at another resolution, it's different again. I've printed this sheet and there doesn't seem to be any issues with the line weight. However, I also have encountered the opposite scenario where it looked okay on screen but when printed out, the line weights were different. I do use PDF to check that everything is okay and this seems like an unreliable way to do it. Is it something that I have done wrong?

I use Illustrator. I'm learning this by myself so did not even know you were meant to use artboards and not layers but thanks for enlightening me. Would the solution now be to move everything to artboards within the same file now? I just read up a bit more about artboards and it seems that most people use it if they are designing on different sized boards. My file had some base layers, about 5, which were used for the files that I wanted to export. E.g. I would have the 5 base layers + one extra layer and that would be one exported PDF. How would I best utilise artboards this way? Wouldn't I have to copy all my common elements into each artboard then?

I saved them from AI to PDF and they were fine. The document is made up of strokes, Japanese text and boxes. This is in one AI file with separate layers for different text - a total of fifty layers. I did not flatten the file. I merely pressed save as PDF. Here is an example: - I saved this on page one. This is on page two: I went to CombinePDF.com and combined these two pages. It then gives me which seems to be all the layers in the AI file.

Hi, I have converted some files from ai to PDF. I tried to merge the PDFs together to make booklet but they have all stacked on top of each other. I read that flattening the images might help but it also changes the quality or the colours as well? Does anybody know about this or have some advice regarding this?

I think it's from a laser printer (it's a combination scanner, photocopier and printer) but I will have to double check. In terms of workflow, I'm not sure how much you want me to go into detail but basically, I used live paint and then I expanded it. Previously when I used a lighter grey, it didn't have the streaks but since I changed to a black, it's giving me this effect.

Hi, I've printed Illustrator converted to PDF before and they have all been fine. I have one document that seems to give me grief- everytime I have printed it, it has come out with black streaks. The only thing I can think of is that it's because of the block of black. I initially had a darker grey and there were no black streaks but after I changed to a dark black, streaks showed up only on print, not on the PDF preview. The streaks don't seem to be printer related streaks because they are very clean streaks. See image Does anyone know what's going on?

@Test Screen Name: Thank you for your ongoing help! They don't offer trapping - so I should just use the Illustrator option? I might be misunderstanding but you said that I shouldn't print it to see whether it has worked yet I should work with my printer. But my printer will print these out and how should I see whether it has worked? MichaelStephens​: The outlines overlap by a bit (the black strokes) and the spaces in between these strokes have been filled with Live Paint. I suppose with your example of the yellow and magenta circle, my print is the "just touching the edges".

Thank you! If I do this, how do I know that this will work? I guess I just want to know if I make another print, do I apply trapping to it myself straightaway or do I have to do a proof then trap then proof again? I want to minimise the number of steps as much as possible.

Thanks for clarifying the transparency flattening! It's pretty consistent- always under the horizontal lines, never on the vertical bits. You know what's up? I think I might have applied a drop shadow but undid it so I don' think that issue remains.

Hi, I've just had something of mine printed. I'm not sure why but there are some areas that have a very faint white line under it. Maybe I'm being nitpicky but I scrutinised everything on the print and there's a white line under certain paths or in a coloured section. I've had a look at what I can see on my file on my computer and I've stared too long at it to discern whether I'm making it up or not. In the image below, when printed, there is a white line underneath the paths that are surrounding the blue . To give a bit of background, this image had live paint applied. The paths are black and the background is blue so not sure where the white could have come from. Also, as I said, some coloured live paint areas have a white stroke only near the outline of the black i.e. on the edges (see below one of the parts affected). Before I blame the printing, is there anything that I did? I did not flatten transparency, I used PDF X-1a 2001 preset for PDF. Was it the live paint? I'm a bit frustrated at this! Any help is appreciated

Hi, I just had a question about trimming these lines. They are different thicknesses and the corners of the lines just protrude a little bit. I am wondering how to trim them since I can't use the scissors tool as the vectors end on the horizontal line already. Any tips? Thank you!

Thank you but like you said, if it was the same proportions like 4:5 then it would be easier to scale and Monica's suggestion would work well. But if it was from 4:5 to 3:2 like 8x10in to 12 x 8 inch, how could this be done?

Hi, I just had a question about resizing vectors to proportion. So I have a vector on a 8x10 inch artboard and it is 2 inches from the bottom and centred horitzontally but I want to size this exact vector to say 20x30 artboard with the "same look" i.e. centred horizontally and proportionally same distnace from the bottom. Is there a way to do this easily without having to calculate inches etc? Thank you!

Hi, I want to create some pictures on Illustrator and then place them onto a template e.g. a worksheet, in Indesign. Would it be easier to use Indesign altogether or Illustrator alone or is the best way to do the pictures in Illustrator and then transfer it over to Indesign? Hi, I am trying to achieve an effect where e.g. I have a background with watercolour splotches but I overlay text and just want the watercolour areas overlapping with the text to show up. How is this achieved in Illustrator? Clipping masks? Pathfinder? Hi, So below there are 2 identical shapes (i just cut them off) which when I first created it was just one shape with a black outline and black fill.Somehow when I tried to move it, they have separated this. When I go to oultine view, it looks like it's expanded too. I am not completely sure why but i think it has to do with the fact that I flattened transparency? Could this do this to my image? If so, how do I get back to the original image of them being together- do I merge it or unite it in pathfinder? How do I prevent this from happening again? Thanks!
