Aaaaand it obliterated the shortcut again. Sometimes I hate how dependent I am on this crappy program...

Ha...you can tell I never used the defaul Ctrl+W or Shift+W, because I looked it up and managed to get it wrong. This worked! I just needed the extra step of creating a new shortcut set based on the Default. Thank you so much...this was a lifesaver. Now to tackle this document with 73 pages of notes that need to be manually placed. *wince*

I used to have a custom shortcut — CTRL+W — to insert footnotes. A recent update obliterated my customizations (thanks, Adobe! 😒), and I can't figure out how to recreate it. CTRL+W is currently assigned to "Switch between Normal View and Preview Mode," which I don't need. Can somebody walk me through how to correct this? Or point me to a tutorial? Thanks!

And...reflowable layout. I have a simple superscript style applied to references. I don't know what else to check, options-wise...nothing looks wonky to me.

Sorry. Your "big hammer" solution is so far what it's taking...and what's taking it so long. I'd love to find a less-hammer-more-magic solution. Yes to PDF export. Footnote count varies from doc to doc (one to hundreds).

Is there anyone else out there who can help me with this? I'm so weary of having to rebuild every file when this issue pops up. One of my clients is having me update something in all of their epubs, which means having to recreate dozens of files. PLEASE...SOMEONE HELP ME FIGURE THIS OUT AND REALLY RESOLVE IT!!!

Any other angles of attack you can think of, @James Gifford—NitroPress?

Thanks, James. Alas, no success with either of those. And yes, it was originally a Word file.

I'm exporting from InDesign to epub, and a file that's been exporting OK suddenly loses all of its footnote numbers (not the reference, but in the notes themselves) in the epub. It has happened in more files than I care to count. This is a recurring issue that I'd really like to find a solution to. So far, the only thing that's ever worked is completely rebuilding the file, which is seriously no fun.

Alas, the no-split thing didn't work, but after recreating the file...TWICE 🙄...I finally have functioning footnotes.

Kinda like whenever I ask for PC help and half a dozen people can't find anything more useful to say than "Buy a Mac." 🙄 Anyway, thanks for taking a look at it, James. And I just bought your book. 😉

This issue has cropped up again. Here are a couple of screenshots of the code from Sigil. Hoping they might help identify where the problem is so I can perhaps repair it in ID (or in Sigil, as long as it gets fixed, but I'll officially ask for an ID solution since this is an Adobe forum!). Here's the text where the first note appears: Here's the note:

I think a corrupted former file is the answer! I went back to an older indd that I'd set up for export, copied a few chapters into there to test, exported, and...ahhhh...those lovely little blue underlined numbers are back. Thanks so much, James!

Getting rather desperate for an answer to this one. Have posted in three user groups to no avail. Somewhere between indd and epub, my footnote numbers are going AWOL. They're fine in the text, but gone from the note. First image is my ID footnote settings (and they show up obediently in the indd) and second shows a numberless note in the epub. Lemme know if you need any others. I've exported dozens and dozens of epubs with these same settings, and suddenly three books in a row had this problem. The first one randomly corrected itself, but the next two have proved more stubborn. I will name my firstborn child for anyone who can solve this! 😉

I'm trying to search for [. . .] and replace with [ . . .] (just add a space in front of the first dot), and ID has decided that . is a wildcard, so it's finding things like this: I've restarted the program to no avail. Any other ideas?

This thread is 5+ years old, but I'll give it a shot... Any chance there's an update on this script that works with the latest version of ID (at least I'm guessing the newer version is what's causing the problem)? Here's the error message I'm getting:

My hopes soared! And then... https://indesignsecrets.com/topic/epub-and-ebook-forum-is-now-closed. But I'm gonna post in their general forum and see if I can get away with an EPUB topic there. 😉 Thanks for the heads-up!

Does anybody know of a support community that focuses more specifically on creating ebooks in InDesign? Most of my questions go unanswered here, and I know there are answers out there...somewhere...if I could only find where that somewhere is! 😉

I'm getting love notes from Amazon about my footnotes not back-linking to the text. Is that some magic setting I need to adjust in InDesign, either in the footnote formatting dialog or the EPUB export dialog? Or is it something I need to do outside of InDesign? If the latter, anybody got any leads for me? Thanks! ~Valerie

I think it was either one of the Bebas Neues or the District Pro. I didn't bother to try either again...just picked substitutes. The Garamond, happily, appears to have been innocent, since I use that a lot.
