Good thought, but in this case it probably wouldn't help. This was a really old book file that I was asked to update, and any version of the file would have the same issues. For some reason it happens with almost every old ID file I work with.

In the first file, Shape of Sola Scriptura EPUB.indd, I'm pretty sure it's the small caps character style that's causing the trouble. I've attempted to replace the font, I've uninstalled the font, I've tried editing the style and deleting/replacing the style. Every attempt just causes ID to freeze so I have to force restart. In the second file, Son to Me.indd...beats me. I can't even open it. Could somebody help me with repairs? Thanks! ~Valerie

Whoa...I'm just seeing the posts and comments about Font Bureau removing all of their fonts. I'm guessing this gets to the bottom of my issue. Un.be.lievable. A pox on Font Bureau's house!

So this is funny. I no sooner update ID and see the message that missing fonts will now be automatically updated so I'll no longer get missing fonts messages than the first file I open gives me...a missing fonts message! Ha! Liar, liar, pants on fire! 😉 But seriously...what's going on that I can't access any Adobe fonts? Huh. And when I search for the missing fonts on the Adobe fonts site, I get a "Sorry, no matches" message. Is there some kind of outage? The most recent fonts issue I see is from June 1. Things I've tried (based on similar past topics): log out/log in shut down/restart make sure syncing is enabled I'm on Windows 10.

I'm working with a very old book file (~20 years) to create a new file for reprinting, and I'm getting this error message: "The index could not be generated. One or more index entries contain invalid characters. Please delete any invalid characters from the index entries." There are, of course, hundreds of index entries marked in the document, and I haven't the first clue how to start troubleshooting this problem. Any ideas?

At about 7:30 this evening, InDesign froze solid enough that I had to power down my laptop to get out of it. Now it won't recover the file I was working on. The latest save timestamp on the file is 4:13 this afternoon. I'd sure rather not have to redo that three hours of work (or the hour I did earlier in the day, if the file is completely irrecoverable). Now every time I try to open ID, it opens up the old version of the file as an untitled document and freezes trying to recover this one. Anything else I can try?

The rest of the headers in this file are behaving themselves, but for some reason, Appendices B and C have decided they want to be Appendix A. I am uninterested in their personal identity crisis and need to insist that they be Appendices B and C. What's especially weird is that it works fine on the very first page of B (first image below), then switches back on the second spread (second image below). It's the same text variable that I've used throughout the book with no problem; it's only gotten weird here in the appendices. And here's the text variable definition (Lesson Topic is identical except for the paragraph style): I've tried scrapping and recreating the master page. That did not help. I'm running Windows 10, InDesign 14.0.2.

Since it WAS creating a file, though Kindle Previewer keeps saying the conversion failed, I tried opening it in Calibre. THAT WORKED! Only problem is with the cover image. I had it properly selected in the EPUB export dialog box, but it didn't show up in Calibre. So I added it in Calibre, but when I export to MOBI from there, although it has a cover image in the file itself, that image does not show up as the thumbnail in my Kindle library. Anybody know a way to rectify that? EDIT: Turns out that's a friendly way Amazon has of forcing you to use their tools and sell on their platform. So I'm just going to cross my fingers that when the client actually uploads it to Amazon as usual, some magic will occur to make the thumbnail function properly.

A couple more bits of data: 1) This is the error message I'm getting from ID. I always get the "Custom Layout settings..." message, so it can't be that. The "External Text Anchor..." message might be the problem, but I have double-checked every link in the document, and they're all good. 2) After I click "OK" on the "Book Conversion Failed" dialog, Kindle Previewer opens this Excel file, which I've never seen it do before, and which I cannot comprehend, especially as it contains the contradictory message "Book conversion successful":

I've never seen it before, and I can't think of anything I'm doing that's different from what I've done hundreds of times before. It also gave me this spreadsheet popup: Obviously it could be a problem within Kindle Previewer, but I thought I'd check here first. I'll try again with other files I know have converted OK in the past, but not tonight...time to throw in the towel and admit I'm not going to finish this project this week! I'm using Windows 10, InDesign 14.0.2 x64, and Kindle Previewer 3.31.0.

Thanks, Uwe. The style is applied to the whole answer blank (the underline is part of the character style), which of necessity includes tabs.

This may be the most bizzaro bug I've identified yet. My project is a student workbook. When I'm doing the layout, I leave the answers in the answer blanks so I can gauge how much space I need to leave for the answers. Then I change the character style color to none. And tabs start changing all over the document. An extra one will push a blank line to the next line...or one will disappear, leaving a line a bit short. Has anybody had a similar issue? (No, I don't have screen shots, because I have to just force my way through fixes and move on; just wondering if anybody else has encountered this particular weirdness.)
