Ah...I was just throwing the question out in hopes she'd respond when she does see it, since it's been four days since I'd heard from her (and over a week since she responded to the thread). I wasn't expecting to hear back till Monday, but if it's going to be another week, I guess I'll just have to give up and recreate 50+ styles from scratch...

Thanks for the update. I can't even get this dialog box. It's crashing right after I select "Show Import Options" and click on the file I want to import. Since I am also unable to import it into a new ID file with my text styles loaded from the old one, but I CAN import it into a new ID file WITHOUT loading text styles, it seems to me likely that the corruption is in the text styles. Is there a way to repair corrupted text styles without starting from scratch? There are dozens of styles in this document, so that would be cumbersome and risky.

In the first screenshot, there's a checkbox in the bottom left corner: "Show Import Options." When it works correctly, the next dialog box allows mapping of Word styles onto the paragraph and character styles created in InDesign. That's what I'm trying to do. Windows 10 Home, OS build 17134.829 InDesign 14.0.2 I decided to try it in a new ID file. Created the file, drew a text frame, loaded text styles from my original file, File > Place. File selected, Show Import Options checked, clicked Open. And this is the next thing I see: Here's a new twist. I tried it in a new ID doc WITHOUT loading my text styles, and it didn't crash. So that points to the problem being in the styles, perhaps? Is there any way to evaluate that? There are dozens of styles in this project, so of course I'd rather not have to start from scratch with them. Hope that's enough detail to go by. Thanks! ~Valerie

Oh joy, oh rapture. It's pulling this stunt again. As with the first instance, I'm working with an older ID file (new edition of a book), and have converted it to the current file format. Surely there's a way I can import new content without having to start the whole ubercomplicated, 800-page textbook layout from scratch!

I discovered that the version of Myriad Pro Light that I had installed did not have a certain glyph (ȳ) in a certain weight (Light). A friend suggested that I uninstall my versions and activate a newer version via CC. Worked brilliantly. Until the next time I opened the file. Now it's showing the font, but telling me it's not installed: What can i do to make it "stick"? I'm on Windows 10, and here's my ID version info: Thanks! ~Valerie {Renamed by MOD}

I do a number of textbook layouts, and when I'm done, other people are sometimes just too tempted to tweak "just one little thing," which, in a very complex layout, can throw off the entire book. After a particularly bad incident, we decided that unless I'm dead or something, nobody touches those files except me. As a little reminder, this is now on the first page of those documents (with apologies to the Bard):

Hunting for that info every time is just as time-consuming as rebuilding all the preferences. Since it's so often necessary, I'd love to see it built into the reset process. Automatic backups of preferences, then "Reset to [select date]" when needed.

Yep, that ended up fixing it. Since trashing preferences seems to be the solution for 90% of problems, I truly wish Adobe would figure out a way to, well, not have to trash EVERYTHING. It's such an interruption to workflow to have to reset interface, rebuild recently used font and file lists, etc. Could any of those be incorporated into another function, e.g., workspace, to protect them?

This happens sporadically when I'm trying to do a find-and-replace -- I want to search just the selection, but it does not give me that option. Any clues? (The search terms are just spaces as I attempt to tidy up the original formatting.)

It clearly just likes you better. It does not work correctly. It finds 0 results (when I'm looking right at a result on the screen, which is of course why I wanted to do the find and replace to begin with. Thanks for taking the time to give it a shot, Michael!
