P: Crash (11.3) - Launch/Open Catalog - faulting module: substrate.dll : 411196 (Windows)

After updating LR today from the Cloud app on my PC it now fails with an error every time I open it. I have tried updating graphic card drivers, uninstalled and reinstalled LR itself but the problem persists. Was working fine yesterday. It is now unusable as the error occurs on starting up the software. Have sent crash reports via the error popup. Urgent help requested!

    So morning has com to Norway, and I have the result of my catalog import, which I started yesterday night. This is what I did:
    1. I used the Select Catalog window (Altclick to LrC icon), and selected Create New Catalog.

    The new catalog file opened normally.

    I performed a complete Import from another catalog selecting my “crash2 catalog file. This had finished when I woke this morning, and seemed to work normally. I few settings must be done.

     

    2. I also made SQLite3 a .recover on the “crash” catalog file. First start crashed, but the second opened normally. I did a locate photo of offline files, and I imported a few photos from yesterday. This worked normally, but… While I was writing these lines, LrC suddenly closed, and the catalog file could not be opened again. (Lock file deleted).

     

    Conclusion. It seems to me, so far, that the best solution is to roll back to 11.2, and wait for a fix. The catalog file works fine in 11.2.

      Mine has been doing this since I first installed 11.2 on my new Mac Studio M1 Max last week. I first thought it was upon closing, but have realized it's the opposite. Oddly enough, I downgraded to 11.1 yesterday due to publishing plug-in issues ... and I am still getting a crash every time I reopen LRC. It does not occur on my 2017 27" iMac i7.

      I have tried a lot more tonight. 

      I tried to upgrade once more, but 11.3 crashed at  presenting the splash screen. Then I rolled back to 11.2, started normally, and turned off the GPU. Next step was to update to 11.3 again, to see if GPU could be the problem.

      11.3 crashed before the Splash Screen, so I rolled back to 11.2 once more.
      The Catalog file was opened in 11.3 via the Select catalog screen, and integrety was checked several times without any message. The catalog File opens normally in 11.2.
      Then I tried the Select Catalog screen, and created an empty catalog. That worked fine. I also started Import from another Catalog, but did not complete it.
      Then I tried to open several (4-6 of them) customer catalogs, which I earlier received for repair with SQLite. All of them opened in LrC 11.3 without any problem. All photos were of course offline, because they are with the customers.
      I also opened a catalog, that had to be upgraded to v11, and it worked fine.
      I also opened a catalog backup from before updating to 11.3. It passed the splash screen, and was about to present previews,  and then crashed.

      At last, I opened a catalog backup from 31.03., and that seemed to work fine, but it was only a short test. 
      Now, I am going to create a new, empty catalog, and complete Import from my crashing catalog. I am excited to see the result tomorrow morning.

      Solution préconisée par Adobe ce jour: remonter à la version 11.2 via l'appli Adobe Créative Cloud
      Cliquer sur les 3 points en haut à droite
      Choisir "anciennes version" et réinstaller la v11.2
      Je l'ai fait et LRC refonctionne comme hier 11/04
      En attendant une v11.3 sans buts

        Same exact thing here. With the following message: Lightroom has encountered a problem and will close. But it doesn't close, I have to use the task manager to close it. Impossible to get in. Installed, reinstalled, installed again and reinstalled. My pilots are up to date, everything worked fine. Had to get back to 11.2 version. I think we might be a lot of people with this problem. I also sent a crash report.

        As stated from Rick Flohr, roll back to 11.2 using your Adobe Desctop Program Manager. Find Lightroom Classic, and click the 3 dots next to the Open button. Choose Other version, and then select 11.2.

        If you receive a error message about conflict with CR LogTransport, then open Windows Task Manager and stop CR LogTransport, before you continue deinstalling LrC 11.3 and installing 11.2. This will help you using LrC untill the fix is released.

        I get an error everytime I try to start LRC after the 11.3 update.

        You could try updating to the most recent Nvidia Studio driver for your graphics card:

        If that doesn't help, many people have been reporting crashes with 11.3 on Windows, and Adobe recommends rolling back to 11.2:

        Je viens de faire la MAJ vers la version 11.3 de Lightroom Classic. Juste après le lancement ce message apparait :
        " Désolé, une erreur s'est produite
        Adobe Lightroom Classic a rencontré un problème et doit se fermer."

        Puis l'appli quitte.
        Quelqu'un d'autre à le problème depuis la MAJ ?

        Sur Windows 10 64bits 32Go de Ram

        There are a few users who reported something similar. Would you mind sharing the crash report with us? Did you try updating graphic card drivers or uninstalled and reinstalled Lightroom? 

        The team is Investigetting this bug; while the team evaluates the crash and advises on a workaround, you may revert to 11.2 via the Adobe Creative Cloud Application.

        In the "correct answer" at the top of this thread, Adobe employee Rikk Flohr recommends rolling back to version 11.2 while Adobe investigates the issue.  See here for how to do that:
