P: Convert to Video Timeline option missing - Apple M1 devices

I am not able to select anything but "Create Frame Animation" in the Timeline. I am trying to create a Video Timeline, but not using Frame animation. This option isn't in the bottom left or top right of the Timeline menu.

I have tried resetting my preferences, uninstalling and re-installing, creating a new document, and converting all layers to smart objects, and none of those have worked. I have a macbook pro with macOS Big Sur version 11.2.3 with an Apple M1 chip.

Thank you for the help!

Hello. When trying to open a video file through file/open within Photoshop, all video files are grayed-out. Right clicking on a video file and choosing to open with Photoshop yields a popup from Photoshop stating that it can not open this type of file.

This problem occurs with all video files tested from ProRes to h264 -- files which open on an older hardware/software system.

Current problematic setup:

Photoshop 23.0.2

MacOS 12.0.1

MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2021) M1 Max

64 GB Ram

Thanks for any advice or info,

Benjamin

Photoshop had "Accessibility" and "Full Disk Access" enabled within System preferences. I added "Files & Folders" just now and restarted, but video files still would not open.

You need to look at the other replies in this conversation. You'll have to run your mac through "Rosetta" which is Apples Intel emulator until Adobe designs photoshop to run on the M1 chip. Yes...this feels like something they shouldve done beforehand...

Go to the main photoshop application icon in your applications folder. Right click and select "Get info". In that pop-up there is a "run in Rosetta" option you can select. Click the checkbox and then open up photoshop. You should have access to those other features but make sure to save often just in case. I've heard it might be a little less secure.

Hi Everyone,

Same issue as Giovanni, Photoshop does not open MP4 and MOV files.

Even after installing Rosetta it does not work. I'm on MacOS Monterrey and M1 Pro chipset.
Anyone fixed this issue? Thanks for your hints.

Photoshop 23.02 is missing the Video Timeline. I have to go open the Intel version from the cloud to use the the Video Timeline. Frame Animation shows up in both versions (Intel/M1 Pro).

Hi,

We're sorry about the trouble with Photoshop on the M1Pro MacBook. This is a known issue with Apple silicon devices & our product team is working on making the video features available natively on the Apple silicon devices. Currently, they are only available under the Rosetta emulation mode.

Please check: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/photoshop-for-apple-silicon.html

Regards,

Nikunj

I get it. I expected some bugs and some workarounds. Just hoping the video timeline will come back in future updates.

hello, I am using macOS big sur, M1. I updated to photoshop version 23.0.2, there is no video animation option on the timeline. I wonder if the problem is me or has this feature been completely removed?

To use Photoshop's video features on an M1 Mac you will need to open Photoshop under Rosetta. See the link below:

Just ran a quick experiment on my friends brand new MacBook Pro (very nice) running Photoshop CC2022. Tried to import a 10 second .mov to convert into a .gif

The option to import video into Photoshop CC2022 seems to have been removed.

The same .mov file imports fine in Photoshop CC2021.

Is this another Adobe 'Improvement'? Can anyone help me?

Thanks for your response.

Unfortunately running Rosetta defeats the object of buying a new speedier laptop to convert videos to gifs more quickly.

Thanks Adobe for not fully supporting the new Apple M1 chips!

Hi, is it an M1 Mac ? You need to run Ps in Rosetta mode to work with videos...

Yep. It's the M1. Close that version of PS and open up Creative Cloud and select Open (Intel) under Photoshop. Example attached. You should see your video timeline and editing capabilities come back.

I'm one of those designers who made .mov archives with stop motion and edited videos in Photoshop, and I'm curious what the next step is now that Adobe won't let us open videos in Photoshop anymore, we'll them provide us with guides and solutions on the subject ? maybe it's something that Photoshop will fix in the next update or we just have to find my own solutions on it?

If you are using an Apple Silicon Mac, looks like the video support code is not yet available for Apple Silicon according to the Adobe help article Photoshop for Apple Silicon.

If the above is the cause, you can still use the video features if you restart Photoshop in the Rosetta translation environment, which will run the Intel version of Photoshop.  There are two ways to do that, so pick one:

  • In the Creative Cloud app under All Apps, click the ellipsis menu (…) for Photoshop and choose Open (Intel).
  • In the macOS Finder, select the Photoshop application icon, choose File > Get Info, enable Open in Rosetta, and start Photoshop. If you use this method, it will always open in Rosetta until you switch it back.

At some point Adobe might get that video support ported to Apple Silicon; when that happens we probably won’t have to do this switch any more.
