P: CS6 / CC Keyboard shortcuts not responding Mavericks/Yosemite MacOS 10.9; 10.10

Since Installing Mavericks on my mac pro, the keyboard shortcuts, such as zooming in/out, undo etc, intermittently do not respond.
I have to click on another tool in the tool bar to get the keyboard to respond again.
The problem returns intermittently and seemingly not as a result of the Auto Save function.
My mac pro 15" has 8gb of ram which is more than enough for the type of work I do.I am an illustrator who primarily works around the brush tool.
Have tried disabling Graphics Processor and restarting, but this does not resolve the issue.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Just to be clear with the problem as I am experiencing it - it isn't specifically restricted to any particular tool that I am using at the time. It happens regardless of whether I am using the brush tool, zoom, lasso, magic wand or anything else. Just a sudden disconnect from the keyboard that is only resolved by tapping the interface with the Wacom pen.

It's also worth pointing out that I am using a hardwired USB keyboard as well, not a wireless one.

I can't believe I just spent £3500 on a new Mac, CS6 and Wacom a month ago to get this frankly 1990s style software bug.

Hi Adam,

sorry to hear it didn't work:(
actually a was doing the test as you describe- i opened up a 1.1GB file and created a new curve adjustment layer and brushing at 50% using the cmd+z on almost every stroke.. normally the error shows up in a few strokes, but i did this testing for maybe 15-20 minutes with no error.. and also tried another file.. i haven't did the test since and maybe i was just lucky "having one of the good days" :)
it's really not an option for me to work with the intel iris gpu as it only works with the macbook pro display- and i need my external display connected for work, so that's why i only did the test once.
i might was i bit too fast with posting and have to do the test one more time (will do it monday).

i use and "old" wacom intous 4 with the lastest drivers installed (6.3.7-3), but i've also tested it with the previous wacom drivers and with a wacom bamboo - same result.

it's not only the brush that's causes the problem- same error with the dodge/burn tool (O) which i also use all the time- only difference is that i can do alot more strokes with dodge/burn tool to reproduce the error.

i'm thinking there must be some sort "connection" with us guys here in the forum (and others), that are having this problem?!? what do we all have in common?
cause i know another retoucher (as myself) working on an older mac pro with maverick and photoshop cc and he doesn't has this problem at all.. have to ask him next time which gpu is in his mac and what wacom he's using.

Hey there Magnus,

Unfortunately, I am still experiencing this issue. I have downloaded the app, ran it, rebooted my computer, switched into integrated graphics mode (I was sure to select it twice as per your instructions, and could confirm that I had selected this mode through the "check" next to integrated graphics in the app menu).

Even with integrated graphics only, I was experiencing the error regularly.

However, I also tried turning off "Use graphics processor" and rebooting photoshop: after doing so I was not able to reproduce the error in over 60 strokes (about a minute of stress testing: usually the error will occur before 20 strokes, sometimes in as few as 4). Cautiously optimistic, I tried using PS as I would normally, but very soon after I began to work I found the same old keyboard cutouts were occurring. Perhaps forcing the system to use integrated graphics reduces the likelihood of this error occurring, but if my experience is any indication the workaround hasn't solved the problem in its entirety.

We have the exact same system (late 2013 MBP Retina), although I am currently testing on Adobe Photoshop CC as I have uninstalled CS6. I implore others with either program to try them out and let us know how it works for them. I do, however, use an older wacom device with the latest drivers available for the model.

Magnus, do you often use keyboard shortcuts such as undo, and brush size change ("[" and "]" keys) in your work in conjunction with the brush tool? Are you able to try "stress testing" your workaround, I.E. Making a stroke, undoing, making a stroke, undoing, etc. for 60 seconds or so to see if the error does not occur?

Thanks very much, I hope your fix continues to work for you.

EDIT: Edited for clarity

Hello,

I bought a brand new macbook pro late 2013 one month ago with pre-installed Maverick and Photoshop CS6 installed.
I have exactly the same issue as you guys describe. The keyboard stops responding (i'm using the cmd+z) when using the brush- and have to click the interface to make it work again.
I've been reading this forum the last 2 weeks and some others, and tried everything suggested without any luck.

BUT then i might found the problem.

I have this little app installed that tells me which GPU is being used.
My Macbook Pro Retina is with integrated intel iris GPU and the discrete Nvidia GT Geforce 750M.
The GPU automatically switching when you connect an external display (as i do) and when you are opening Photoshop.
The cool thing about this app is that you can force your Mac to only using the discrete or integrated (see screenshot).

So i have forced the GPU to only use the integrated intel iris pro and after that i can't reproduce the keyboard/shortcut issue after testing for almost an hour.
As soon as i switch back to the Nvidia GPU i can reproduce the problem within 2 minutes.

I also checked with the Photoshop GPU preferences and it seems like the Intel is also taking full advantage of the Open CL. Drawing mode is set to Advanced and Use Open CL and GPU acceleration are checked.

Can any of you test and see if you get the same result? Guess this can only be tested with a Macbook Pro with 2 GPU's installed.

But i've been thinking that this could be a problem related to the Maverick and the Nvidia GT drivers?
Also been wondering if this problem also happens on a Mac with ATI GPU? Anyone?

The app can be downloaded here:
http://gfx.io

There's a little bug thing with the app- it's like you have to click the selected GPU twice before it's being forced. So in the dropdown menu, you need to open it up and click the selected GPU and then do it one more time.

And remeber that you can only force the GPU if you external display is being disconnected and Photoshop is needs to be closed when you do the force switching.

sorry for my bad english :)

best regards,

Magnus

And Chris, just to clarify, neither Apple nor Adobe are able to do that? I'm sorry, some of this is a little (most definitely an understatement) above my head. Does this have to do with the legality issues you mentioned earlier on, and if so, how are problems of these sorts traditionally solved when neither party has full insight into the others' code?

OK it's not App Nap. I turned it off, the problem persists.

A thought. Might this be caused by App Nap in Mavericks? Anyone tried turning App Nap off?

A month ago I invested in a new Mac (Mavericks), new Wacom and Photoshop CS6.

I am getting exactly the same problem. It's destroying my workflow. Photoshop randomly disconnects from the keyboard until I click on the interface.

Please get this fixed it's destroying my workflow, not to mention my sanity.
