P: Dialog boxes / error messages pop up invisibly - macOS

When an error or alert occurs the dialog box is invisible. Some examples of the alerts include but are not limited to: "No pixels were selected because the layer is empty" or "Do you want to save the document before closing?" Clicking anywhere on the screen prompts an audible error noise (as though you tried to click outside of the dialog box you've been prompted to respond to). The box is not appearing on a different monitor or behind other windows, it is simply invisible and cannot be interacted with unless you press Enter or Escape on the keyboard. Upon pressing the Escape key to close the dialog box, the box becomes visible for a fraction of a second before closing—revealing its location. This has hindered my workflow, especially when trying to close a document I don't want to save changes to because then I must force Photoshop to quit. Running on Mac. Version 23.2.2

Please review the recent update, 23.5.1, info and let us know if this in fact fixes your issues.

as mentioned before I think in this thread if you hold SHIFT, OPTION and then click on the photoshop app Logo in your Dock/Menue bar two times (first time photoshop disappears second time it appears again.) the dialogue box appears. its just a work around not a solution. its an absolute disaster. but also maybe the more people report this issue to adobe maybe the sooner it gets solved. I chatted with reps but nothing so far

I've been experiencing this issue with hidden dialog boxes every day since I installed a fresh copy of Photoshop on my M1 Macbook Pro last year. The dialog box exists but it's hidden behind the Photoshop window, so the only workaround is to already know what the dialog box says and hit the hot key to click the appropriate button. Just close a tab and don't want to save it? Hit "D" for "Don't Save" and the correct option will be clicked in the hidden dialog box. UGH.

Adobe's indifference on display here is a joke.

@Bozwell you have summed it well. I am also amazed by the indifference and inability to address this issue demonstrated by the Adobe.

@licence04c90776642 said, "My team often sit with clients in an edit suite situation and when this happens it's just plain embarassing." I wish Adobe showed some humility and care for its customers.

There are sufficient reports of this issue in this thread. Please don't just sit in your cubical and claims Adobe couldn't reproduce it. Adobe can simply reach out some of the users here and ask them to share screen with them when they encouter the problem.

Highly disappointed with the quality of Photoshop with Mac M1.

@Bozwell

They moved my issue here for some reason, it was its own thread before. Probably because it's similar, for me the save window (and now the open window too!) doesn't appear sometimes and I lose work.

Honestly right now I'm waiting for some reliable alternative to Photoshop to appear, because it's obvious Adobe doesn't care about solving issues, all they ever do is change feature locations in the UI to justify their pay, and they damage working features in the process.

Let me see if i understand this thread correctly.

1.  The OP posts and issue (same exact issue that I am having by the way on M1 Max MBP 16).

2.  Adobe rep posts he "can't reproduce it".

3.  Adobe rep later posts "no one else is having this problem".

4.  Meanwhile dozens of people post they are having the same exact problem with no solution for months and in some cases causing catistrophic loss of all unsaved work for some people.

5.  Someone posts an off-topic windows related problem.

6.  Adobe rep now goes down that rabit hole.

7.  Problem still unsolved, but because a rep "couldn't reproduce it" it must not really exist...

After reading 4 pages of posts do I have this right?

As a tip to ANYONE having this Macbook related problem of hidden dialogue boxes while running an external monitor.  Learn the quick keys for the answers of the diologue boxes you get stuck on the most.  For instance if you are trying to simply close a document you know you can save and hit the "S" key when the invisible dialogue problem happens and it will save.  Hit the "D" key and it will "don't save" etc.  This is the immediate work around to know all of these buttons while adobe decides to come up with the solution to this bug.

Having problem in Ps, but I THGINK the problem is Apple related. Basically, the dialog boxes are hidden, and I can't see them to respond.
Made a video- too big to attach. EMail and I will send the videos! What you'll see is me saving a multi-layer image, which takes a while. So I hit "X" to close the window.... and I SHOULD get a window that says something to the effect of "Ps is saving this image. We can close the window when the save is complete." or something similar.
Regardless, the window dialog is hidden or covered. As you can see in the video, I get an error sound when I try to do anything, meaning the dialog is open and must be responded to. But the dialog is NOT visible. AT ALL.
In this case, I can just hit Return and all is good- in fact, you can see the dialog flash up when I do this. And I used this as an example because I know this behavior. But there are MANY other dialogs I get Im not sure what the default is, and I just have to "Accept" to move on.... and sometimes this is a bad thing!
OK I ahve the same problkem here it is again in a different context. I just want to close this image. I hit the "X" on the toolbar to close it.... and an obviously hidden dialog box is popping up, probably saying "Do you want to save this?" I dunno CUZ I CANT SEE IT!!!
Anyway, I hit Return just to keep it going.... and you can see the dialog flash up, and then a new window appears, and this one IS on top! So SOMETHING is working and showing, but some are not (Again, I have a video!)

So I posted this to the FB, and someone replied it is something to do with M1 and how memory fills up. I too am using a MBP M1 with 32 gigs. Anyway, he wrote:

I have this on my M1 laptop… even when it is plugged into my Studio monitor. Happens when memory gets exhausted is my guess because it takes a while before it happens. I also have the problem where if I open from LR after doing too many the new one will be hidden from view. I can see the layers and the window is active, but I can’t do anything because the document window is hidden. I have to change the view to tile vertically or horizontally and then I can complete that document. Closing and re-opening fixes it for a while.

So there is a problem, not sure if its Apple or Adobe. But it is a real problem, and effecting many M1 users.

If you want the videos, please email me at images -at- photoslc dot com

So I am new to this thread and found it because I was having the same problem when trying to create a new layer. The new layer dialog was nowhere to be found and was seriously undermining productivity. I finally solved it by going to the Window > Workspace > Keyboard Shortcuts & Menus, then selecting the shortcut options for a new layer. I simply toggled the eyeball icon (visibility?) and voila, upon trying to create a new layer, the dialog was suddenly available on my upper of four monitors. To be clear, it took weeks of trying different suggestions to no effect before I stumbled on this. I am no code guy and therefore not clear on why this worked, but it did. Hope it helps someone.

Hi.

I don't remember when this started happening, but I've gone through like 2 updates already and it's been this way for a while. I don't have time to try to reproduce this anymore and it doesn't seem like I'm getting any way to fix this, so feel free to close this, I'll either deal with it or look for an alternative to Photoshop.

Thanks anyways.

Very often, especially when Premiere is open, Photoshop just hangs when the Windows Open File Dialog is requested. It can't be closed, restart is the only solution to this. Also happens when you'd like to save a document and in this case, you'll lose your work. You can clearly see the 'fontsize' dialog on top.
My guess is the Open File dialog is hidden behind the main screen (modal) but since it's invisible, you're toast. This should not happen in 2022!

For the past few weeks, Photoshop on my laptop isn't working at all, whenever I try to open a new this happens, it won't get open and I'm left with this screen. I don't know what to do, I've uninstalled and reinstalled the software multiple times, and tried upgrading and downgrading as well but it's still not working, any help will be greatly appreciated.
