Issue

  • Photoshop version27.3.1 Release
  • OS: Tahoe 26.3 (25D125)

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Image > Mode > Duotone…
  2. Change Type to Monotone
  3. Attempt to name Ink 1 anything with the letter “P” in it
  4. You will not be able to type the letter “P” because it will instead toggle the “Preview” box in the Duotone Options panel on and off

Expected result: Being able to name an Ink color with words that have the letter “P” in them
Actual result: Typing the letter “P” toggles Preview on / off

Yep, I can reproduce the “forbidden p” -- but it’s not what you think. Typing any one letter causes Ps to check the list of Presets; “p” doesn’t exist. Yet.

To create a preset with pantone in the color, click onb the gear icon to the left of the OK button, then name a custom preset in the Duotones folder.

    1. change the Image>Mode to Grayscale. Duotone will now not be grayed out.
    2. Click on Image>Mode>Duotone
    3. select your ink color(s)
    4. Save Preset

    @dkantor

    It’s a known bug.

Can you paste in the name from the clipboard, such as typing and copying from a text editor program?

Stephen, that was a great suggestion! It worked. I copied from Text Editor and pasted. Thanks.

Creating a monotone image involves naming the ink color one wants to use in the image. Unfortunately, Photoshop does not allow the use the letter “p” in the color name. So I can’t use a Pantone color. Nor can I use “spot color” since there is a “p” in “spot”. See screen shot.

Use of the letter “p” simply toggles the preview on and off.

In the English language version it’s been reported and confirmed that typing the letter p does the same as your experiencing.

    @Rainer Klute

As you know, this is baffling! I don’t have an answer, but I do have some thoughts.

The Spacebar is typically the shortcut for checking/unchecking a checkbox.

I wonder if “V” might be a shortcut for “Vorschau”?

What happens if you type “v” in the middle of a word?

Can you type “V” in other dialog boxes?

Is this also happening to colleagues with a German keyboard?

    When did this start?

    Hi Jane,
thanks for answering. To answer your questions:

I don’t know if V is the shortcut for Vorschau. Looks like. I don’t use Photoshop very often.

It happens anywhere, even in the middle or the end of a word.

I’m not so familiar with Photoshop. If you can tell me a panel which has a) the possibility to enter a text and b) a Preview checkbox, I’ll test it.

Yes, my German colleagues have the same problem.

I don’t know when this started, but I just noticed it.

    Hi Rainer,

Since it’s happening to your colleagues, it sounds like a bug. I’ll be out of my office for a few hours, but will test with my U.S. keyboard when I get back. My system is the same as yours, except for the language.

I just tried to do some weird stuff with Photoshop and for this I needed to create a quadruplex file. Then I started to name the four colors with the German names for one, two, three, four.

The German word for "four" is "vier" but I was not able to type the letter v.
Instead the "Vorschau" (“Preview” in English version) is marked and unmarked every time I press v.

    Please make v usable again.

Hey, @Gavin at MRP! Thanks for bringing this up. This relates to a previously known macOS-only issue that the team is aware of and working on. I’ve added your report to the ticket.

    Thanks!

Thanks. Meanwhile, my workaround is to type the text in a different app and then copy / paste it into that name field.

@Gavin at MRP I’m not experiencing the issue on Windows 11, with Photoshop version 27.3.1

It turns out this issue is on Macs only. Adobe is aware of it, and are working on a fix.
