P: No image preview on Open dialog box on Windows

The preview window in the "Open" dialog box on Windows is gone in Photoshop. So if I click on a PSD file (once) to preview it, there isn't one. I have to completely open the file or go digging for it in Bridge. This is a very fundamental feature that needs to return, especially for those of us that have hundreds of files to dig through. PLEASE fix this.

All the third party codec thumbnail companies are circling like scavengers.

Frankly, I don't want to pay $10 or more for another solution that could be easily integrated into Photoshop CS6 and is ALREADY integrated into Illustrator CS6.

We pay enough for Photoshop CS6 to get out credit cards again for more solutions that do what all other previous versions of Photoshop used to do.

I once thought as you do.

Then I actually tried a free download for a codec-based solution. I realized the value added was much greater than the price, and that I needed to waste no more time crying about the problem to Adobe. Time is money.

Clearly it's quite possible to create a codec that works perfectly in Windows. Adobe could create such software, they DID do it once, but they either can't or won't do it right, so they discontinued it. Adobe should look into buying out a company like FastPictureViewer, who clearly know how to do a good job of making thumbnails.

Apparently there are reasons they wanted to take out the subclassing they've done to the OS dialogs in the past to show thumbnails as well. Probably that caused crashes. So they discontinued it.

It's pretty clear the functionality isn't coming back in Photoshop CS6, and (though your voice is heard here) there's no indication it will come back in a future version either.

A codec pack is a good solution, available today, and which experts are telling you is actually better than what you requested.

I agree, and as I said in an earlier post, a few quid invested in something like the FastPictureViewer Codec pack can have system wide benefits

There are free solutions, already noted in this thread.

The solution that costs a few bucks gives a more professional result.

Please fix this Adobe.
No, I will not use clunky Bridge or pay for a third party patch.
Press the rollback button and make us happy.

Good news but...
why i have to pay a plug-in, for that basic feature, after paid over 1000€ for the upgrade to CS6?

If a 3rd part plugin is the only solution i'd like to find a free version.

John McAssey mentioned up thread the FastPictureViewer codec pack.

That package not only gives you thumbnails in the Photoshop file dialogs, but also enables thumbnails in Windows Explorer and any other application that uses Explorer's file dialogs.

I have the Fast Picture Viewer codec pack (I had it even when Photoshop did put up the little preview) and I wouldn't want to be without it. It's professional quality software, causes no problems with Windows, and enables MANY things, including the ability to see all the various kinds of raw files, ALL OVER WINDOWS. It even facilitates previews with the Windows Photo Viewer, and even handles color-management.

It seems a bit silly to complain loudly here about a minor feature having been removed from Photoshop when there's such a much more functional and integrated solution available.

The only thing I don't like so far about the FPV codec pack is that they don't (yet) show thumbnails for PSB files. I've requested that support, and I think they may have misunderstood the request, since they said they're worried that interpreting BIG files in memory during thumbnail generation could be a problem, but I let them know PSB can contain everyday small files as well. Fortunately I don't use PSB files for much.

same problem as others...
I'd like to see a Preview of pic inside Windows OS dialog.
It's faster and useful.

Clayton--can you post links to the forums where you had these discussions with Microsoft? I'd be curious to read the conversation you had with them.
