P: PS v27.4 Remove Tool (GenAI: On) is not working and producing artifacts

The AI repair brush is not working in version 27.4. An error message appears when I set it to AI ON. When AI is set to AI AUTO, a pattern appears where the brush is supposed to repair.

Please fix this bug.

Ok this work:

Close Photoshop.
Go to *C:\Users* and find the folder with the "gibberish" name.
IMPORTANT: Right-click the folder, choose "Rename", and Copy the exact name.
Delete that corrupted folder.
Open CMD as Administrator and run: mklink /d "C:\Users\PASTE_GIBBERISH_NAME_HERE" "C:\Users\YOUR_REAL_USERNAME"

Note that this bug exist since 15 days, please fix it.

L’Outil supprimer (Remove Tool) ne fonctionne plus correctement. Il fait des tâches de couleurs ou affiche simplement un message d’erreur “Impossible d’effectuer cette opération en raison d’une erreur du programme.”

décocher “utiliser un processeur graphique” dans les Performances ne résout pas le problème.
Passer en mode “plus stable” plutôt que “plus rapide” dans l’option “Outil Supprimer en cours” des préférences “traitement de l’image” de résout pas le problème.
switcher entre IA générative activé ou IA générative désactivée ne résout pas le problème.
réinitialiser les préférences de Photoshop ou réinstaller Photoshop de résout pas le problème.

Title: CRITICAL BUG: Local AI Models (Object Selection/Classifier) fail on Windows due to Non-ASCII (Hebrew) Username Path - App creates corrupted directory.

Environment:

OS: Windows 11 Pro (Version 25H2, Build 26200.8037)
App: Adobe Photoshop 2026 27.4
Language/Locale: Hebrew (Non-ASCII Windows Username)

The Issue: When attempting to use the Object Selection Tool or Select Subject (in "Device" mode), Photoshop hangs on the "Finding objects" dialogue and eventually throws a "Classifier model not loaded correctly" error.

The Root Cause (Encoding/UTF-8 Bug): The local AI engine in Photoshop 2026 fails to parse Windows user profile paths that contain Hebrew/Non-ASCII characters (e.g., C:\Users\לירז). Instead of properly routing to the user's actual AppData folder, Photoshop's engine suffers from an encoding failure and generates a corrupted, Mojibake-named directory directly under the Users folder (in my case, it created a folder named C:\Users\׳׳™׳¨׳–).

Because Photoshop is looking for the AI components (such as com.adobe.photoshop.smart-objects inside UXP\PluginsStorage\PHSP\26\Internal) inside this broken path instead of the real one, the tools completely break.

Troubleshooting Steps Taken (Isolating the bug): To prove this is a Photoshop string encoding issue and not a localized PC issue, I performed the following tests:

Clean Reinstall: Used the Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool, completely wiped all Adobe files, and reinstalled. Result: Failed.
Antivirus/Firewall: Disabled all security software to ensure models weren't being blocked. Result: Failed.
New English User Account: Created a brand new Windows user account with strictly English characters (LirazTest). Result: Worked flawlessly. The AI models loaded instantly, proving the hardware and software are fine.
Manual File Transfer: Attempted to manually copy the generated AI folders from the English user's AppData to the Hebrew user's AppData. Result: Failed. Photoshop still attempted to read from the corrupted string path.

The Ultimate Proof & Workaround: To definitively prove the app is writing/reading from the wrong string, I opened CMD as Administrator and created a Directory Symbolic Link to route the corrupted Mojibake folder name back to my actual Hebrew username folder:

mklink /d "C:\Users\׳׳™׳¨׳–" "C:\Users\לירז"

Result: The Object Selection and AI tools immediately started working perfectly in my main user account. Photoshop successfully read the files because Windows routed the broken path request to the correct folder.

Call to Action for Adobe Engineering: This is a critical bug affecting international users. Please fix the UTF-8/Unicode string encoding for Windows user profile paths in the next Photoshop update so that local AI features do not break for users with Non-ASCII names. Please do not suggest "creating a new English Windows user" as a solution; the software must be able to handle standard Unicode paths.

Since you've confirmed the pattern and logged the bug, I suggest pinning this workaround to the top of the thread. It has already helped several users resolve the issue immediately while waiting for the official patch.

The Workaround: The problem is caused by Non-ASCII characters in the Windows username. Photoshop fails to load AI models because it creates a corrupted folder (Mojibake) instead of using the real path.

Steps to fix:

Close Photoshop.
Go to *C:\Users* and find the folder with the "gibberish" name.
IMPORTANT: Right-click the folder, choose "Rename", and Copy the exact name.
Delete that corrupted folder.
Open CMD as Administrator and run: mklink /d "C:\Users\PASTE_GIBBERISH_NAME_HERE" "C:\Users\YOUR_REAL_USERNAME"

Hi @jkl01, thanks for the report. Looking at your System Info, I noticed something that might be causing the issue. Under 'Pfad für temporäre Dateien', your path is: C:\Users\JRGENK~1\AppData\Local\Temp\

This happens because Windows sometimes creates a shortened '8.3' nickname for folders that contain special characters (like the ü in your name). In some cases, the new Photoshop AI engine has trouble reading paths that contain the tilde (~) symbol.

It might be worth trying this workaround to see if it fixes the error:

Open your C:\Users folder and find your actual user folder name (for example, Jürgen). Make sure of the exact spelling and capitalization.
Open Command Prompt as an Administrator.
Type the following command (replace Jürgen with your actual folder name if it's different) and press Enter:

mklink /d "C:\Users\Jürgen" "C:\Users\JRGENK~1"

What this does: It simply creates a 'virtual link' so that Photoshop can access your files using the full folder name instead of the shortened one.

@Sameer K I’m noticing that most of us who have this error are on Windows and our native language isn’t English. My Windows username has special characters, and that has caused errors in Adobe before. Maybe that could be the problem again?
Do any of you have special characters in your Windows username?

Every time I try to fix this by uninstalling or changing something, Adobe creates a new folder in C:\Users and modifies my username where the special characters are.

This isn’t the first time it has happened, and it’s not the first time this has caused problems with Adobe.

Inside the folders there is only this: AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2026.

I also have a user name with special character and also see creation of the mentioned new folder. However, this is/was also the case for first installation of version 27.3.1, but that version works without problems. So, from my perspective, user name should not be root cause for the observed bug in version 27.4.

A few versions ago I had a lot of problems with Adobe until they figured out it was caused by special characters, and they were able to patch it. The issue here is that it seems to be happening again after the jump to version 27.4 and something must have changed.

Today, while reading the messages, it really caught my attention that none of us seem to be native English speakers. That greatly increases the chances that somewhere on our PCs we have special characters that could be causing conflicts with Adobe again. And I say again because this has happened several times before.

I’d like to know if other users, like us, have special characters as well, and whether Sameer could try to recreate this to confirm or rule out that this might be the issue again.

I believe the only things left in the list to try were reset all my preferences, and downgrade to photoshop 27.3.1. I did both, and am still getting the error.

I've written several times, but it seems that my questions remain unanswered!!

I just want to know when ADOBE will provide a solution to this problem!

I've done everything the “experts” have said in other posts. But nothing has changed!

I don't want to go back to previous versions, I pay for PS and LR and I want everything to work properly!

@jrcortez I understand your frustration, but as you can read in the linked threads it’s not a bug that generally occur. I don’t see this issue on my machine and @Sameer K can’t also reproduce this. It seems that’s a issue that depending on certain local configurations.

As far as I know Adobe doesn’t have classified this as an error.

Hi,

I am running photoshop v 27.4 on Windows 11. When I try to use the Remove tool with generative ai on, I get the error “could not complete your request because of a program error”. I’ve tried:

Updating GPU driver (NVIDIA studio driver, not game ready)
Confirmed GPU compatibility via Help → GPU compatibility (RTX 3070, passes)
Set Photoshop to High Performance GPU in Windows 11 graphic settings
Scratch disk: 1800GB free
RAM allocation 70%/~35GB
Reset the remove tool
Ran photoshop as an Administrator
Set Remove tool to “Most Stable” in preferences
No windows event log entries corresponding to the error
The UXP log immediately after an error shows “TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading ‘translateUIString’) “ in the Adjustments panel plugin at the time of the error.

I’ve had the tool working on prior versions of Photoshop. I’d appreciate any help with this error.
