Photoshop: Curves Adjustment on Smart Object Frozen (27.11.0)

Hi,

Sometimes,

but quite often, when using a Curves adjustment as a smart adjustment on a Smart Object, after I create the first point and start dragging, the curve freezes and can’t be moved any further. The only workaround is to select the point and move it with the keyboard arrows.

Sometimes, any further action on the selected Smart Object layer produces the following error:
“Could not update smart object files because of a program error (2a135c.901).”

Sometimes the error persists after a restart, sometimes not.

Please fix!

This bug is in addition to the flickering of the image while adjusting (when the Curves do work).

    Hi @Charismatic_yogiB82A

I'm sorry to hear about your experience. I reviewed your post history and noticed that you also commented on an existing bug report:

This issue has already been reported, and our team is actively investigating it.

However, the issue described in this thread appears to be slightly different and may be related to performance. If I understand correctly, when you click and drag the Curves adjustment, the mouse cursor freezes, and you have to use the arrow keys to continue making adjustments. Please correct me if I've misunderstood.

This behavior could be related to either hardware or software. I tested the same workflow on my Windows machine but was unable to reproduce the issue.

To help us investigate further, could you please share the following?

    1. System Information: In Photoshop, go to Help > System Info, copy the information, and share it here so we can review your system configuration.

    2. Screen Recording: A short video demonstrating the issue, particularly what happens when you click and drag the Curves adjustment.

    3. Sample File: If possible, please share a sample PSD file that consistently reproduces the issue.

These details will help us better understand the behavior and share the findings with the product team for further investigation.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation!

    HI @Srishti Bali

    Thanks!

The mouse cursor doesn’t freeze — I can move my mouse (both the Wacom and the Logitech mouse), but the curve is stuck. I can’t move it any more. I can close the dialog and open it again, but still can’t move the curve. And at some point I get the error mentioned above. So I imagine Photoshop is in some kind of stall at that moment.

The system info is attached here as a text file.

Right now I can’t reproduce the bug — only the flickering is visible, but as you said, that’s a different issue and thread, which is why I can’t send a screen recording of it. I’ll send one when it appears again, and I’ll send an example file too.

Although I haven´t gotten that error, the curve in general only reacts on mouse-up, which makes it more or less unusable. This is in public and beta.
in some releases it works, in some it doesn´t.
This really basic command has been buggy since years.

Google’s AI search yields the following results:

The Photoshop error "Could not update smart object files because of a program error" (2a135c.901) usually happens due to GPU/graphics card conflicts, corrupted preferences, or issues handling smart objects/filters in newer Photoshop versions. [1, 2]

    How to Fix the Error

    • Disable or Adjust GPU Acceleration
      • Open Photoshop and go to Edit > Preferences > Performance (Windows) or Photoshop > Settings > Performance (Mac).
      • Uncheck Use Graphics Processor.
      • Alternatively, click Advanced Settings (or check GPU settings) and disable Multithreaded Compositing or Foreground Composite Caching.
      • Restart Photoshop and test again. [1, 2, 3]
    • Relink Missing Smart Object Files (If Linked)
      • If your smart object is a linked external file rather than an embedded one, and the source file was moved, renamed, or deleted, Photoshop throws a path/update error.
      • Right-click the Smart Object layer in the Layers panel, choose Replace Contents, and navigate to the current file location. [1]
    • Reset Photoshop Preferences
      • Go to Edit > Preferences > General and click Reset Preferences on Quit, then restart Photoshop.
      • Or hold down Alt + Ctrl + Shift (Windows) or Option + Command + Shift (Mac) immediately while launching Photoshop to force-reset preferences. [1, 2]
    • Rasterize or Flatten Problematic Layers
      • If a specific layer or smart filter is corrupted, right-click the layer and choose Rasterize Layer (if you no longer need non-destructive smart object capabilities). [1]
    • Update or Roll Back Drivers / Photoshop
      • Install the latest studio/game-ready drivers for your graphics card (e.g., Nvidia Studio Drivers).
      • If the issue started immediately after an update, use the Creative Cloud Desktop app to roll back to a previous version of Photoshop. [1, 2]

    Hi @AxelMatt,

I’m sorry, but I was hoping for a real community response here, not copy-paste from Google AI. And none of the suggested workarounds work for me. I’ve been using Photoshop for the past 30 years, and there is definitely a bug with the adjustment layers since the 27.4.x update that was never addressed: flickering and non-responsiveness.

So please, only answers from people who experience the same behavior and have some real solutions.

And Adobe should finally address this.

Has anyone tested the new Curves in the beta?
