Mouse click-and-drag randomly stops working in Premiere Pro and After Effects on Mac
I’m experiencing an intermittent click-and-drag bug in Premiere Pro and After Effects on my MacBook Pro M5.
The problem started in Premiere Pro and recently began happening in After Effects as well. When I click and hold the left mouse button to drag something, the drag sometimes fails, requiring multiple attempts.
This happens with timeline clips, playhead, timeline zoom, controls, and other drag operations.
I tested the trackpad, two different mice, a wired mouse, and different USB ports, with the same result. Outside Adobe applications, everything works normally.
When Premiere and After Effects are open together, the problem happens more frequently. Closing After Effects often makes Premiere work normally again.
Both Adobe applications and macOS are fully updated.
Please investigate this as a possible Adobe/macOS input or click-and-drag bug. It is significantly affecting my editing workflow.

I’m having thw same issue. M4, Premiere Pro up to date. Tried everything. Everything works fine outside Premiere Pro, defnitely a software issue.

I am having this issue on After Effects as well! I have a new wired USB mouse. Sometimes dragging works, but sometimes it doesn’t. I also require multiple attempts to get it to work. I also have both After Effects and Premiere, and I am using Dynamic Link. My files are in a Sandisk hard drive.

Running After Effects Version 26.5.0 (Build 89)

    macOS 26.5.1 (25F80)

    Thanks!

@different_worldviewa2f7 Are you having this issue just occur in After Effects or in both After Effects and Premiere? If it’s only in After Effects, this would be the best place to make a report with our bug report details.

If you are indeed having Premiere related issues too, can you provide what version and build of Premiere you’re currently on, with which type/chip for Mac? I do see you’re on Tahoe macOS.

The following could also be helpful information to help with troubleshooting:

    • Does dragging also fail in Premiere when After Effects is closed?
    • What are you trying to drag when it fails like is it clips in the timeline, the playhead, panel or panel controls, or files from Finder, etc?
    • Does it happen in each app Premiere vs. After Effects by itself, or mainly when Premiere and After Effects are open together?
    • Since you mentioned Dynamic Link, does the issue still happen in a project that doesn’t use a Dynamic Link such as a new project with a few sample clips imported?
    • Does it also happen with a small test project and media copied to the internal drive, or only with the SanDisk drive?

A short screen recording showing this drag issue and what you’re doing exactly when it happens could be very helpful as well.

    Thanks!

    Hi @Precious_motivation37cf

Thanks for stopping by the Premiere forums and giving us those details about your mouse/drag issue happening. We’d like to get a little more details to help us better troubleshoot.

    1) May we ask what version and build of Premiere you’re currently in? I see you say fully updated but confirming if that means v26.5.2 and which build or another one.

    2) Did anything change or update prior to this issue when it began happening?

    3) I see you tested several mouse setups, but what was your usual setup with what kind of mouse? It’s interesting that you mentioned closing After Effects often makes Premiere work normally again. But then, Premiere by itself began by having this issue.

I wonder, have you tried holding SHIFT and launching Premiere to temporarily disable any plugins (and possibly clear that plugin cache) and let us know if the issue lingers?

If so, could you take a short screen recording of exactly what is happening there? A full view of everything, preferably.

Sorry for the frustration with this and do hope to help!
