.mov files filmed on iPhone only importing as audio in Premiere Pro 2025

Hi,

We're currently having a major issue, where any .mov file shot on iPhone (15 Pro) can only be imported (and recognised) as an audio track. It's to be noted that any .mp4 or .mov file obtained via Adobe Stock is able to be added to the timeline without issue.

Existing project files where .mov files were used are now in a 'media offline' state, and when forcing a re-link, convert themselves to an audio track only.

We've attempted to reset the cache, and have tried different renderers to no avail. And it's worth mentioning that this issue has seeminly cropped up from nowhere; we've not ever had an issue using .mov footage from iPhone.

Attached image shows .mov files only recognised as audio.

Thanks 🙂

@Stan JonesAre you local Admin on your PC?

We noticed yesterday with Adobe Support that for Admin Users the .mov HEVC is importing fine, just not for non-admin user.

Got cut short of time, so we could not figure out the cause yet.

@dillen_6746,

Thanks! The .mov imports for me with video and audio on Win 10 using PR 25.2.3.

In the AdobeInstalledCodecsTier2 folder, I have 3.0 and 4.0, and they both contain mc_dec_hevc.dll and mc_enc_hevc.dll.

I looked at your file in MediaInfo, and compared it to one of mine. Yours is HEVC, vertical HD, variable frame rate, with Rotation set to 90 degrees. I had only a 4K/HDR HEVC Vertical Constant 30 fps from iPhone 15 Pro Max, but other than some HDR oddities, nothing seemed different of significance - other than VFR. But the VFR imported for me without issue.

MS codec does not work in Premiere as it has its own codec.

@Stan Jones Sent you an example file via PM.

I tested a bit more and it seems like that Premiere Pro fails to interpret .mov Files that were recorded with "High Efficiency" / "HEIF/HEVC". When the Video is set to maximum compatibility it is using H.264 and it is successfully importing the files with video.

Interesting that MS HEVC Video Extension is installed and it still can not read it

@dillen_6746,

Can you post a small sample of one of the problem files? I can test.

I have only the 4.0 folder, but am usually shooting prores.

We are having the same issue on one PC. AdobeInstalledCodesTier2 only shows a 4.0 Folder.

How can this issue be fixed?

Hi @Jack38613805k5o4,
I'm sorry to hear your files aren't coming in correctly. Can you confirm that they play correctly outside of Premiere? Were there no updates or changes you can think of, even an iPhone update that may have changed something?  If you have time, please give the team a few more details. See: How do I write a bug report?  I hope we can help you soon.

See if you can find this folder and if it looks the same as mine.
