P: Audio "can't be read quickly enough" from storage

Just started getting this error window today while working on a very simple project that only has a couple After Effects motion graphics clips, and three tracks of audio: VO, music, and light SFX:

Event Details:

Can't access audio

the audio for _____.wav can't be read quickly enough from storage. Please check your storage and try again.

Build:

Windows 11 Pro 26100.3624

12th Gen Intel i7-12700K 3.60 GHz

32 GB of RAM

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060

The local C drive is an NVME SSD, but the file in question is stored on a Synology NAS with IronWolf HDDs. Both the computer and the NAS were built from new parts this year.

Premiere: 25.2, installed this week.

The same error happened on a second computer (same build, also connect to the NAS).

The only thing I have tried that seems to be helping audio playback a little bit is to increase the I/O Buffer size in the Audio Hardware settings to the maximum of 2048 Samples.

In Mac version: Premiere Pro -> Settings -> Audio Hardware:

I still get the error message, but PPRO is able to hobble through and continue playing audio, although with occassional hiccups still.

I am still having this issue in 25.6 Beta (build 33). It was all working fine until about a week ago.

My system is a Mac Studio 2 running Sequoia 15.6 - three screens and a big project - some of the videos on the drives are 4K and  7 hours long - but it still all played back fine in full resolution..It suddenly started lagging.

I fixed it for the video by starting a new project and importing in the previous sequence after having tried making proxies - which failed, and then trying to consolidate the project with project manager - also failed. However I still gwet a lagging blue playhead and the error about audio playback and can't read fast enough.

I am thinking the 'workaround' to all this time wasting might be to switch to DaVinci Resolve - who is with me?

So months later, and its still happening in beta 25.6. are you ever gonna fix this?

Playback is unacceptably bad on PPRO. Having audio drop out constantly means I can never really access whether this edit is working or not. If I had a client in the room with me, I would have to cancel the session, and I have lost a half day of work and pay today trying to figure this out. I am on a fast M3 MacBook Pro playing back 8 discrete 48 kHz audio stems on a 1080 HD sequence. My playback should be screaming fast and easy. Instead the software is barely hobbling along. Please, please fix this. Also, I am stuck on v 25.2 because of a different known bug on v 25.3 with MTS files. Please work on this all the time pronto until it's fixed!!! I am losing money and time here and it's a big drag.

I am using the latest revision. Audio still drops out when playing in the time-line, even on really simple projects. It always exports OK.

Has this been resolved in the latest 25.3 release? I had to revert back to 25.1 because of this issue. It is the last known (to me) version that does not have this issue. Thank you.

I'm having the same problem and it's not only annoying - it's inacceptable. For hours I've been trying to fix it by changing all audio settings possible.
