P: Constant freezing making editing next to impossible

  • April 19, 2026

Approximately every other edit, the application becomes unresponsive for 30 seconds to a minute. During this time:

  • The UI freezes completely
  • Playback may continue, but I cannot stop or interact with it
  • Menu interactions are extremely delayed or unresponsive
  • The system becomes partially unresponsive (e.g., Alt+Tab does not work until Premiere responds again)

This issue also occurs when pressing play, and when opening menus.

The problem began suddenly without any known changes to my workflow or system configuration. It occurs across all projects.

Troubleshooting attempts:

  • Updated GPU drivers
  • Cleared media cache multiple times (both “clear unused” and “clear all”)
  • Tested editing from different drives (including internal and external storage)

None of these steps resolved the issue.

This behavior is severely impacting usability and makes editing extremely frustrating.

I split everyone here off onto a new post based on the main issue happening. We are still investigating the cause that is NOT related to Accessibility features, which is currently being worked on.

Please if you experience a freeze or hang in 26.5 with Accessibility features disabled, we could use Dump files from your system to help us ID the issue that is not related to accessibility features, which we are currently working on fixing on this separate post:

    WINDOWS dump file:

    1. Open Task Manager go to the Processes tab, and identify the Premiere process (you can use search to filter for only Premiere)
    2. In Premiere, get it into the hanging/unresponsive state
    3. Switch back to Task Manager and right click on Premiere then choose > Create dump file
    4. When it's finished, it tells you where it saves the .DMP file.
    5. It'll be large, but it ZIPs down smaller. So right click on the file and choose Compress to..ZIP file.
    6. Then, you can DM me and either provide us the link/access to this file or I can send you a link to upload that file, whatever's easiest.

Other freezing / Hang related issues we have branched off and ID’d specific potential triggers are below:

We believe this is specific to the Panel interactions:

We believe this is specific to File Explorer:

    Hoping to help,

    Amy

    Hi Amy,
I will try to do that this week,  I’m underwater right now, so it’s not an option timewise.

This has been going on for months now, and it has been reported by many users through the channels Adobe asks us to use.

In the meantime, the practical solution for many of us has been to revert to an older version that actually works, while continuing to pay for the current software because we have active projects and depend on Premiere professionally.

At this point, I think Adobe owes users a clear answer.

    Is this problem officially acknowledged?

If it is, has Adobe identified the cause?

If the cause is known, is there a fix being actively worked on?

And if Adobe still does not know the cause after months of reports, users should be told that clearly as well.

What is becoming increasingly difficult to accept is the lack of a clear status while multiple updates are released and the freezing problem remains.

We are not asking for unrealistic guarantees. We are asking for transparency about a serious issue that is affecting paying users and forcing some of us to remain on older versions simply to keep working.

@KatieToo a month ago claimed that the bug was known and they grouped it into this report: https://community.adobe.com/bug%2Dreports%2D728/p%2Dadobe%2Dpremiere%2Dpro%2Dv26%2D2%2D0%2Dbuild%2D65%2Dsevere%2Dsystem%2Dhang%2Dwhen%2Daccessing%2Dmenus%2Dand%2Dpanels%2D1558171

Which is over 5 months old at this point. I know the last time i checked the status was that it needed more info, now they have changed the status to “acknowledged” Which doesn’t give much hope.

TBH I dont know that they are related bugs, I just know I cant use premiere now because it freezes for 30 seconds everytime i switch windows.

@Joe_wpi Yes, this freezing issue is currently being investigated, and over time of which those growing number of reports have been merged to 4 main posts based on what seemed to be causing the issue between them.

In your case, it looked like anytime you clicked out of Premiere and back in, it was freezing up, but also when ALT tabbing out and back in. Sounded like it was unresponsive for up to a minute, correct?

Is this still happening in v26.5.1 like Al Manders mentions below as well, I take it?

May we get any further details about your setup and Premiere from when this issue began onward, see below:

    • Premiere Version: Find the exact version/build of Premiere you’re current using.
    • Operating System: Specify Windows or macOS, along with the version.
    • Mac Chip (Mac Only): Please let us know what M-series chip you have. If Intel please include GPU.
    • GPU and Driver (Windows only): Please let us know your video card and driver version. We recommend updating to the most recent version; for NVIDIA users, we strongly recommend the Studio version of the driver.
    • Media Files: video, images, etc. and what types (can check under Media Properties)
    • Media Storage: Are your Scratch Disks set to your Documents folder or the same as project, and is this the same as the Media drive?

Also, if you could please let us know the following, this is also helpful to know:

    • Does it affect all projects or only some? What about new, empty projects?
    • Do you recall which Premiere this was last working in, and what might have changed? Any plugins, update to computer or OS, etc.

A sample/dump file could also be helpful to identify what else could be creating that freezing, and we can DM you and provide a private Dropbox upload link for that if you’d be able to capture it when it becomes unresponsive. I could include it on that same report but first need to know if you’re on Mac or PC (unless you already are familiar with how to do this).

    Let us know!
    Katie

This is already a known, reported bug – (https://community.adobe.com/bug-reports-728/premiere-pro-26-3-freezes-when-opening-preferences-sequence-settings-or-effect-controls-1628725), Adobe has acknowledged it and suggests it has traced the cause. It is still not fixed. It's present in 26.5 and 26.5.1, the current releases, exactly as it was back in 26.2 and 26.3. Premiere freezes hard during normal editing - slip and move edits, keyboard trims, opening Preferences or Sequence Settings - going fully unresponsive for anything from a few seconds to several minutes before recovering on its own. And it's seems to be tied to Windows accessibility tools running, which is the major problem here.

    My setup:

    • Premiere 26.5.1 (also 26.5.0 and 26.3.2 build 2; also seen in 25.6.6 build 5)
    • Windows 11 25H2 (26200.9168)
    • Core Ultra 9 285K (24 cores / 24 threads), 128 GB RAM, RTX 4090

When it freezes, one CPU core sits pinned while everything else idles - around 5-6% of total on a 24-thread chip, which is one core maxed out - then it lets go. This doesn’t occur in versions prior to 26.2.

Things I've tried that made no difference:

    • Disabling UI GPU acceleration (Preferences > General)
    • The last three NVIDIA drivers versions, both Game Ready and Studio, with a clean install
    • Clearing caches and resetting preferences

The same freeze shows up in v26.x of After Effects too, less often - opening the Text/Character panel, the top menus, or Preferences, which suggests it is tied in with the general UI upgrades of the previous 2 versions.

The previous post already suggests the issue has been found: Windows accessibility features. Magnifier, Power Automate, anything that hooks into the Windows accessibility layer sets it off, with a fix planned for v27. It lines up with what I see: the freezes happen while Magnifier is running, and if I terminate Magnifier mid-freeze, Premiere usually comes back within a few seconds - not always, but most of the time.

Adobe's official workaround is this: don't use accessibility tools.

That is unacceptable. You are telling anyone who depends on assistive technology to stop using it so your software will run. That is not a workaround - it means Premiere is currently unusable for people who need accessibility tools, full stop. For a professional application at this price, in 2026, from a company that publishes accessibility commitments, that is indefensible.

And the fix is parked in v27 - the next major version. That forces anyone hitting this onto a new release just to get a working product, and mid-project you can't simply make that jump: moving a live production across to a zero-numbered build is a terrible, non-real world workflow. Adobe shipped this in 26.2. Adobe appears has diagnosed it. It has to be fixed in 26, now - not held behind the next annual release while accessibility users go without.

I'll provide a dump, wait chain, or repro steps on request. But this needs to be corrected for the current version stack. It needs to be owned as an accessibility failure and fixed urgently.

@Al Manders Thank you for providing those details and sorry to hear it’s still happening in v26.5.1. This issue seems to stem from 4 different main issues now after we’ve merged and identified a few different main issues involved  yes one of which appeared to be anything related to Accessibility settings like Magnifier, Power Automate, etc. such as you listed. Some found launching as Admin helpful, but it was inconsistently working around that and toggling it off temporarily was another.

If it’s still happening in the latest v26.5.1, yes that might be good if we can get a dump and anything additional you want to provide in order to recreate that issue. I can even DM you a private Dropbox upload link for those files. I’ll go ahead and do that now in fact so keep an eye out for that.

    Appreciate your time and patience!

Hi. I found a way to fix the interface lag issue in Premiere Pro 26.3.

    1. In the upper left corner, open "Edit" → "Preferences" → "General."
    2. Find the "Render UI using GPU acceleration" setting.
    3. Disable it.
    4. Click "OK." If Premiere asks you to restart the program, do so.

After disabling it, my interface lag completely disappeared. The Timeline became smooth again, the playhead began moving normally during playback, and the Premiere window itself no longer stutters when moving.

Before disabling it, CPU and GPU usage were low, so the issue appears to be related to GPU rendering of the Premiere interface, not a performance issue.

I have an RTX 2050 Laptop + Intel Core i5-12450H + 16GB of RAM. So far, Premiere Pro 26.3 works fine after disabling this setting.

But a strange bug has appeared: after disabling GPU rendering of the interface, I started experiencing graphical artifacts. For example, after moving a window or interface element, a "ghost" or trace of it may remain in its original location, which doesn't immediately redraw.

This problem with the Premiere Pro interface has been going on since the 25x version. I only discovered today that you can disable "Render user interface using graphics acceleration." At least, it worked for me. Adobe doesn't want to fix anything.

Additionally, disabling GPU UI rendering causes other issues, such as incorrect display of the audio track volume slider's numerical values in the properties. The values are displayed incorrectly and constantly update in various variations. For example, if I decrease the volume by -7 dB, it displays 4 dB, or the negative value isn't displayed at all. Similar issues abound.
