P: Unable to freely move clips and audio around on my timeline. Glitch, bug or setting?

If anyone is able to wave a magic wand and help me fix this issue then I would be so very grateful!

I am using Premier pro 25.1 on a windows PC, I opened up my project the other day to start work and I was unable to freely click on a clip and drag the clip about on the timeline with the same thing happening with audio. When I do click on a clip to move or drag it I am presented with the picture I have attached, in my program window.

I have tried everything on nearly every forum page I can find, reset all settings from splash, cleared cache, uninstalled and reinstalled softwear, new project, everything I can think of but I can't find anything anyway with someone with this same fault.

Thank you if anyone can save me!

Hi all,

I am marking this issue as Fixed, as it was addressed by a Window update. I'm locking this thread but please don't hesitate to let us know - via the instructions in How to Report an Issue - if you have any concerns.

Regards,

Fergus

Hi, after importing some files into Premiere (regardless of whether they're audio or video), the timeline stops working in real time, and I can't use tools like cutting, moving, or selecting.

I work with this, so I really need a solution. Or someone who can explain how I can speak to an Adobe advisor or something. I've tried changing the audio formats to lighter ones, but they just don't work. Here's an example of what I'm talking about:

The clips on the timeline cannot be moved, and I also can't drag new clips into the timeline.

Even after creating a new project, I still can't drag clips into the timeline, but I can insert them.

However, once inserted, they still cannot be moved.

I'm trying to duplicate your setup, but I keep running into some issue here:

you said: "..set up multiple monitors, I have 3. 2 are in 4K and 2 are 1080"

Somethings happening here, and it's just not adding up?

@hugme2 I completely get that this seems strange: you see the problem immediately and yet we're unable to replicate it. The steps you describe to replicate match what we've got in Jira (see below and let us know if we're missing anything).

But so far, even when following the same steps on multiple computers, we're not seeing the problem. We're not saying it doesn't exist - it clearly does - but so far, we've not been able to replicate it. Also, we know that many other customers don't have the issue either. If the issue affected every single Windows customer with two monitors, we'd expect the call volume to our tech support center to be through the roof and it's not.

Would you be willing to get on a video call to discuss the issue? We've done that with a few customers in the hope that we might be able to determine the difference between system configurations. If so, let me know and I'll email you with  more details. As product manager responsible for performance & stability of Premiere Pro, I am very eager to get this issue fixed.

Regards,

Fergus

Method:

  1. Test on a Windows computer with:
    • Nvidia GPU or iGPU
    • Microsoft update KB5050094 (OS Build 26100.3037) or KB5051987 (OS Build 26100.3194) installed
    • Two monitors (one can be a laptop screen).
  2. Configure Windows display settings so that the primary and secondary monitors have different scaling options. For example, primary monitor scale set at 100%; secondary monitor scale set to 200%
  3. Launch Adobe Premiere Pro.
  4. Work on the timeline on the secondary monitor.

Result:
When attempting to move clips in the timeline, "No Entry/Prohibited Symbol" appears.

Expected:
Timeline remains responsive.

You say that your unable to replicate it, yet both issues are well documented on line as to how they occur.

Issue 1 - the ability to change the uifont no longer exists. How can you say you "can't replicated it" when you litterally removed it from the software? This is BS

Issue 2 - If you turn on scaling for your monitors with multiple monitors set up all your videos are frozen in your timeline. To replicate it, set up multiple monitors, I have 3. 2 are in 4K and 2 are 1080. Turn on scaling (you do this to try and get around issue 1)  Put something in the timeline and notice that it's locked.

There you go, both issues. and you're telling me you can't replicate either one I call BS. On top of that, the irony of this is that I'm producing a video on software development best practices. One of the best practics is when you put out a new version and it's broken, you revert back to the old one. You can't get that right either.

@hugme2 We hear your frustration! We know that this issue is really annoying and it sounds particularly so for you as you’re on a tight deadline.

Fixing this issue is definitely a high priority for us. Our challenge is that, so far, we’ve not been able to duplicate the issue at Adobe, which makes it very hard to fix. As you can imagine, we have a lot of people on the video team with Windows computers and multiple monitors, and it is not yet clear to us what the difference is between our setups and those of customers who are experiencing the issue.

In the short term, I want to make sure you’re aware of the three workarounds to this issue:

  1. Making the scaling the same on both monitors. The specific scaling factor does matter, just that it’s the same for both monitors.
  2. Use a single screen.
  3. Roll back to the previous version of Premiere Pro.

Of course, we know that these workarounds are not convenient but I wanted to make sure you knew them, given you’re on a tight deadline.

We will update this post as soon as we have more information.

Regards,

Fergus
