How to disable/block Firefly and Generative AI In Photoshop

Are there any suggestions/solutions for those of us who wish to disable or block AI tools like Firefly or the generative AI within Photoshop? I understand I don't actually have to use tools I do not wish to use within Adobe programs, but I think it would also be nice for some of us with strong ethical opposition to generative AI to have an option for it to not consistently pop up in our feeds or have our work training AI models without permission (hence why I disabled the content analysis option for my account).

Hi all

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. That said, Photoshop doesn't currently have a global "AI Off" or "AI-Free" setting.

Upvote here for this feature request:

However, for certain tools that support both AI-assisted and traditional workflows, you can choose not to use Generative AI. For example, with the Remove Tool:

Select the Remove Tool.
In the Options bar at the top of the workspace, locate the Mode or Generative AI setting.
Set it to Generative AI Off to use the non-generative removal method instead.

Please note that this setting is tool-specific, not application-wide. Features such as Generative Fill, Generative Expand, and Generate Image are AI-based features, but they are optional and can simply be left unused if you prefer a non-AI workflow.

It’s not just the numbers, but to many of us, this is an extremely high-priority matter. In addition, legislation is moving in that direction in many parts of the world, so this is an opportunity to be proactive and stay ahead.

Please add your vote to the existing Feature Request (even though Camera Raw/Lightroom are not mentioned there, for those you should check the respective Fora).

I think it has been argued that the masking is based on »machine learning«, not »generative AI«, with the latter one being more offensive to some people.

But quite frankly I am not sure how much water the distinction holds …

In parts of Europe it is now legally required to mark Ai content in advertising so when working for both customers who are willing to do that and others who are not such an option would be helpful.

Today, I went through all the Adobe AI fixes to try to solve it. It took an hour, half of them didn’t work. There were three dots in the right side, just a bunch turning on and turning off in preferences. Then I opend Adobe Creative cloud and there was a photoshop update. That fixed it. My problem is why didn’t they just list that option first instead of sending all over the preference trying things that weren’t there.

So hopefully, you can just do the photoshop update to solve it.

No one seems to have actually answered this, so for those people who lack the self control to ignore Generative functions inside Photoshop:

Go Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts

Select Application Menus

Scroll down to and select Edit

Find and turn off the eye icons for the functions you wish to disable.

Click OK

You can go further by going:

Edit > Toolbar

And dragging Object Selection, Remove Tool, and anything else you consider to be cheating.

Thank you, but sort of a user profile would be more practical - one with, one without GenAi. Since, allegedly, undoing accidentally performed GenAI operations get stored and flagged anyway.
Something like “User 1” and “User 2”, one with the settings you described, one without. It is also quite unclear to me what AI functions trigger the “AI” flag, allegedly it’s not just GenAI, but, for example, masking in LRC, Denoise and then some

No, too complicated. Just a simple checkbox in Preferences will do fine.

Denoise and masking are not generative AI. They do not make up image elements. They are machine learning, not generative.

Again, if in doubt, just pull out your internet cable. If it still works, you're fine.

Now the Remove tool. Most people seem to think the Remove tool is always generative AI and therefore verboten. It is not, as long as the setting in the options bar is gen AI off. The new local "Device" model requires that setting to be on.

Yes Adobe - remove the AI garbage - ethical customers will never use it.
Adobe should be ashamed that they even went down the AI path.

Ultimately i imagine it will eventually lead to having to drop PS completely since we cannot be 100% certain the AI is not using our work to feed it Generative AI endeavors.

The fact that there is no single AI removal option speaks volumes about adobe ethics!

To show the true intention of Adobe to force AI on users is (and steel our work) is the fact that they have now removed version 22.2 which is the last version to be free of this AI curse.

The fact that this thread is now two years old is evidence that Adobe just DO NOT CARE what users think - shame on you Adobe!

Well, to be fair, 22.2 was not there because it was AI-free. It was there because it was the last version to support 3D functionality running on the now deprecated OpenGL platform. People still had 3D files, so it gave them time to migrate.

I can’t recall when Firefly became available in the Photoshop production version (non beta). It should be easy to look up.

I voted for it and I hope many more will. There should be a master switch in preferences to globally disable all Generative AI (Firefly) in one go.

As it is, it’s possible, and all tools that can optionally use Firefly have a rolldown in the options bar to disable it. But it’s much more effective to cut a tree at the base, rather than continually having to nip twigs and offshoots that pop up out of nowhere.

At the moment, 50% of the entire internet is AI-generated (and that’s what the models train on!). It’s time to form a resistance movement ;-)
