UPDATE: I figured out the issue. I had to apply the Master Page Usage to make the Header/footer show on the 1st page, and modify the height of the header area on the 2nd page. I have an issue where the header and footer of one page in my document is not displaying in the body page. In the master page, the header and footer appears to be correct, compared to other documents within the book that are not affected. This issue is only affecting the first page in one chapter, where no header or footer appears. The second page is missing 1 line of text from the header (the header contains 3 lines of text), but the footer is ok. The remaining pages in the chapter are ok, and all other chapters in the book are ok. I have tried importing formats, element definitions, and running a custom script that I have for my documents, and can't make the header/footer work on the page. I am using FM 2017. Any advice?
Hoping of course to persuade some colleagues this is not the way to go, I'm checking the results of Save as .rtf. The snag so far is that even a single page with four lines of text is taking several minutes to save. Not a problem in itself, but I'm curious – have other people noticed the same thing? FM19, Windows 7.0 on corporate life-support …
I have a document for which I'd like to have independent autonumbering for chapter, sections, tables and figures. For example, consider the following structure which the numbers for each are independent. More importantly, my EDD is based on docbook's markup, so it seems a bit different case than what is described here ). I've tried the "T:<n+>", "F:<n+>" suggestions but without success. 1. chapter 1.1 section 1.1 figure 1.2 figure 1.3 figure 1.2 section 1.3 section 1.1 table 1.4. figure 1.2 table 1.4 section It seems FM allows for only one counter per context level. Thus, the result for the example above is that the 2nd number is always be increasing by 1 instead. (e.g. "1.2 section" is numbered as "1.5 section")Thanks.
Hello, I created a new document in Framemaker 2020 (file>new>document>portrait) (my old Frame 8 templates are not working despite the settings appearing to be correct - the text will not flow onto multiple pages). I only get a Right master page. I try to create a Left master page but the dialogue says this label is reserved... which makes sense... but how can I edit and use the Left master page!?
FrameMaker 2020 hangs when editing the Publishing menu for HTML5 output. Brand-new software. Brand-new computer. Same problem! This is the exact same issue that I had with the 2019 version when using the Publishing pod or menu. That error was overshadowed by the problem when trying to output any PDF. The work-around for that was resetting the ini file - suggested by Matt - a real life-saver. I have done that about 20 times in the last year or so.Today, on a recently new computer, I have installed the new 2020 version of Tech Comm Suite. (I am familiar with the use of FrameMaker and the computer well and truly meets (and exceeds) all specs and system requirements. The 2019 version was working with no problems - so why did I upgrade?)The only thing different from all default settings is that I am trying to output to a folder other than C drive. I don't think that is an unreasonable request. The first hint of trouble - I cannot map to any drive in the file location pod. The window clo
I’ve been working in Frame updating a file for the last week and I was on page 90 out of 174 making changes and when I went to save it I got a dialogue box stating “The file has changed on the disk since you last opened or saved it (I just saved it 10 min prior). Someone else has probably modified the file. Do you want to save it anyway?”. When I click on okay to save it I get another dialogue box stating “An internal error occurred while writing imported graphics in this document. The file has been saved, but has lost some image data. Please report this error to Adobe Technical Support.” The file will not save, I continually get the above dialogs everytime I try to save it. It saved it as FD7 File type and B50 File type, which neither can I open.
I am looking to have better control of the bookmarks in the PDF output from FrameMaker. In the document, I am working with once I save as PDF and I view said document in Acrobat the bookmarks appear with the paragraph tag, and the section tag what I would like to see is just the Section tag. i.e.What IS displayed: Module v2.2 (Body Pages) - Module 1 Dell 7920 BIOS Configuration and RAID Configuration What should be displayed: Module: 1 Dell 7920 BIOS Configuration and RAID Configuration This issue is accompanied by the lack of Appendix sections having bookmarks in the PDF. They have links in the TOC sections that function properly but there are not bookmarks that show in Acrobat for Appendices A-D attached are screenshots of how it looks now.
My team is using FrameMaker 2019 (32-BIT). Our Framemaker is connected to a CMS (currently using VSS and we are not able to use the 64-bit version). We can open files in FM, edit them, Save them and Close them (both .fm files and .book composites). But when we close FrameMaker, the app appears to close, but then we get a pop-up that says "Adobe FrameMaker 2019 has Stopped working - A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Please Close the program. -> Close the program". This used to be intermittent but seems to be popping up whenever I open and close FrameMaker. We are using Version 15.0.5.838. Is there a a solution for this?
I'm trying to open some old FrameMaker 8 structured files using FrameMaker 15, and keep the structure. Is that possible, or do I need to employe some type of workaround? Thanks.
Of course, given a free hand I'd rewrite the titles … but in a regulatory context, that's just what I haven't got and can't do. Here's what I can manage by naughtily editing the generated ToC and adding a soft line-feed after "skimming": but I was wondering whether someone might have tips for a more elegant solution. Thanks in advance for any hints and tips!
For any FrameMaker application, an Element Definition Document or EDD contains element definitions, attribute definitions, formatting rules, and other supporting information governing insertion of elements. The Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) store the formatting information for the elements. Most advanced users are comfortable working with CSS to define the styling and formatting information for their content. FrameMaker gives you an enhanced CSS import feature that lets you import styling information directly from CSS. With support for the latest CSS 3 standards, you get more control over your content's style and presentation. In addition, you can import these CSS 3 formats directly into your structured document's EDD to create more presentable and good-looking documents. For more information, see XML with Cascading Style Sheets. See a video on CSS3 styling support.
Whenever you migrate content from one platform to another, the first challenge after importing is to chunk the migrated content. Chunking of large documents could take you a long time. With the latest release of FrameMaker, you can do this complex task in minutes. Once you have your content imported into FrameMaker, launch the document splitting feature from File > Utilities > Split Current Document to easily split your long documents. This feature lets you work on one file at a time, which gives you more control on how the splitting process works. You can choose to split your document on the basis of markers or paragraph formats. There’s a preview feature as well that shows you how the final output will be generated. If you are not satisfied with the suggested structure, you also have an option to merge or split topics. This gives you more control on how you want your final book and chapters to generate. For more information, see Split large documents. See a video o
Hi, although I have all the Helvetica fonts installed, when I open my files it's reporting them as missing in the console, and the fonts definitely don't look right. Help? I'm using FrameMaker 2015 on Windows.
Hi I am working on a book that was written by a german company in English but all the paragraghs, table designs and loads more are all in German. Is there a way to change everything to English?
I am using FM 2019 for generating HTML5. In the generated HTML5, there is an extra line in the graphics which is not there when pdf is generated or when HTML5 is generated using FM 2017. I can share an example: PDF output of the image HTML5 output of the same image where there is a grey line in the 6500 NE box. Please assist me in resolving the issue.
Hi, I had to do some work while I was on vacation but didn't have my work PC so I opted to download a trial version of FM15 and asked a co-worker to send over the files I needed. Now, back at the office I cannot open the .book created in FM15 in my purchased version of FM12. The options I tried were to Save as: Document2019 (.*fm), MIF 2020 (*.mif) and MIF 7.0 (*.mif) For each, when I attempt to open in FM12 I get this error message: "Although [this file] appears to be a FrameMaker document, it can't be opened with this release of the product." Please help 🙂 I'm going on maternity leave on Friday and can't leave my replacement with this mess 🙂 I am sure there must be a way to bipass this because when we receive documents from our translators, I often see a message stating that the document was prepared in a newer version of FM and that some features may not be available or something of the sort. Thank you
A Structured FM file uses Chapter and Section variables to create page numbering e.g 00-01-1, where 00 is the chapter variable, 01 is the section variable and the 1 is the page number. These have been set in a file master pages using Format > Document > Numbering. When a book is created, that file is used to import the Element Definitions for the structure of the book. No problems so far. When the file is added to the book and the book is updated the "sectionnum" variable gets stripped out leaving the numbering of the file as "00--1".When selecting the file in the book and using Format > Document > Numbering to correct the numbering error, only the Chapter variable and Page are editable. The section and subsection edit area are grayed out? What is the fix please? What should be set that would appear that has not been set Thank you Bob
After decades as a happy and committed FM user, and slightly longer (though not continuously) working with structured content, I keep thinking "really ought to have another go at using FM for DITA". Triumph of hope over experience? Here's this afternoon's brick wall: File > New > Dita > map gives me a new map where I can't even work out how to set the title =8-/ click? double-click? right-click? none of the above …It's bad form, of course, to draw direct comparisons … but in my day-to-day DITA environment, File > New > Map and the cursor is ready for me to start typing the title. So, what am I missing? give me some hints on how to set the title for my new map, and then I can go wild trying to insert a couple of children.
I had FrameMaker 2017. It used to run. Then it started crashing on startup and I could never get it to run.My company just upgraded to FrameMaker 2020, so I downloaded it. I am on Windows 10.I uninstalled FrameMaker 2017, restarted the machine, and installed FrameMaker 2020.It crashes on launch. The error dialog says this:-------Adobe FrameMaker 2020 has stopped workingA problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Please close the program.->Close the Program->Debug the program-------This is the only window that appears. FM doesn't appear to get very far, and there is no information on what might be causing the problem.I renamed this folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\SLCache and it didn't help.Any ideas? Thanks,Melanie
Hi All,We are using Structured FrameMaker 2017 and planning to move to DITA. Can we have some automated sctipts to create DITA topics (Concept, Task, Reference) using the existing FrameMaker Chapters. Thanks for your support in Advance.
Hi. Not a FM newbie, but coming back after a long absence. Using 16.0.0.754 (2020) on Win10 1909. I'm importing a Word doc that is loaded with endnotes -- 75 of them in 14 pages. The Word doc appears to me to be "clean" -- that is, endnotes are formatted as endnotes in the Word doc and they all appear at the end. For compatibility, I've saved the Word doc as a) rtf, b) a .doc file, and c) its native Word 365 format, .docx. Using File | Import in FM (and trying each of my saved formats in turn), I select the corresponding paragraph formats and import. The text of the doc comes into Frame just fine, but all the endnotes appear as footnotes on the pages where they appear. They also have lost some of their internal formatting -- hyperlinks, italics, and boldface, for example. Perhaps I am doing something wrong... The big issue is that they appear to have come in as footnotes, not endnotes. However, before the upgrade (when I was still using Frame 2019, I imported a similar d
I am making a book and I noticed that all of the files show the heading text for the "chapters" of the book except for one of them. All the chapters have the same paragraph style/heading to start the book chapter but the title in the book view is different. see attached images it is not creating any issues with book creation or cross-references alike but I am wondering if there are any things that I have not checked in the highlighted document that I can look for to make them match.
I connected above 20 chapters to a book file for different language. whenever im opening book file a particuar chapter only asking to reconnect all the graphic files but rest of the file graphics connecting automatically. now my question is why the particular chapter asking to reconnect all the graphics?? if anyone knows the answer please tell me. i placed image for that i just ignored all the imagesNote: im using unstrucutred frame maker 2019thanks in advance
In the past, FrameMaker has always kept the last-used styles as defaults. Now, the last-used settings for my graphics tools do not take effect until I change the setting to something else, then change it back again.Example:For lines, I use Arrow at Head for the end style. Normally, when you set an end style, it becomes the default every time you draw a line. Now, even though the tool icon shows an arrow as the default, when I draw a line, there is no arrow. Clicking on the arrow icon produces no result. I have to change the style to something else (such as double arrows), then change it back again, to get the desired end style.I'm having similar experiences with Line Width, Pen Pattern, Fill Pattern, and Object Style (custom frame).Hoping someone else may have run across this and found a fix.Version 15.0.6.956
We use a number of single-row Table Styles for product navigation and notes. Depending on the instance, a specific Paragraph Style is used, e.g. the NAV Paragraph Style is used for product navigation whereas NTS is used notes and tips. Each also have a corresponding Table Style of the same name. Is there a way to automatically apply a Table Style based on the Paragraph Style used? I.e. the user creates a table of any style and enters the relevant text using the correst Paragraph Style. The Table Style is automatically updated to the correct/matching Table Style. (Similar to how Master Pages are applied based on Paragraph Styles)
