FrameMaker

This started as a question but it's now an FYI in case others have the same problem as I had until this afternoon.The object properties panel displays graphical objects' width and height in some unit. You can set the unit for the current session by going View > Options and selecting an option for Display Units. However if you close and reopen FrameMaker the units will revert to whatever they were before.The maker.ini file contains the setting UseDisplayUnitInTemplate which the documentation says determines whether or not the default units are taken from the application template.fm or are as defined in the maker.ini file. However I discovered today that even if UseDisplayUnitInTemplate is set to Off, the default units are still taken from the template when an existing document is opened; i.e. the value is not saved in the document you are editing, it's always taken from the template.So I opened the template, changed the units in View > Options, saved the template, and bingo. Every time I update my TOC, I get the "No master pages applied because no master pages exist" error.  Does anyone know what causes that?Any help is greatly appreciated.

My company just upgraded to the 2017 Release (14.0.4.511) of FM. In all previous versions (and my experience goes all the way back to version 2.0 ), when I import a PDF file (or any image file), it places itself in an anchored frame at 100%, spanning columns if needed. In the current version, when I do this, it scales down the image to an apparently random percentage. For example, I just imported the same file three times into the same text flow. One came in at 22.22%, the next at 40.06%, and the last at 45.32%.Is this a bug? How can I get the images to import at full size by default?Thanks.

Hello! I have a huge book file we needed to add some chapters to at the last minute. As such, I had to create new paragraph tags/elements for the new chapters and now I need them to appear in my TOC, LOF, LOT, and LEP. The problem is when I update my book it doesn't ask me if I want to add any other elements anymore - is there a way to add elements so they appear in your auto-generated files? I'm specifically having problems with my LEP. It just updates it. I need to add more paragraph tags!

I have a long text inset, spreading over several pages. I can use this inset normally, but inside the source file (in a separate file storing the inset text), the text frame seems to be visible only within a single page. How can I make the frame/text visible and easily editable over multiple pages?

Hi guys,I started using FrameMaker a week ago. My first task is to create a structured user manual for one of our products. So far, I have created a simple EDD, covering the basic structure, I need. My question is how to include chapter numbering styles into the EDD, such that the first few chaptrs start with Roman numerals and the rest with Arabic ones.I have already created two types of chapters in GeneralRules (PreChapter and mainChapter). Now, I would like to indicate it in the same EDD that if PreChapter is used use Roman numerals and if MainChapter use Arabic numerals.Thanks!Hadi

We generate several PDFs from each FM document. Webmasters have asked us to start adding the PDF filename into the File Information field.We custom-name each PDF as we create it. We have too much volume to manually add the filename to the PDF at each printing.I can't find a way to configure the FM document so it generates specific file information for each condition-setting version.What automation tool(s) are likely to help?

I need the page numbers (1,2) to read A1, A2 on the first Subject, B1, B2 on the second, C1, C2 on the third, and so on. How can I do this? All of my building block variables each chapter's numbering properties are spoken for. I can't use <$volnum> or <$chapnum>...What can be done?

I put about 1MB pdf file as a graphic on framemaker12 but when I save as PDF file, white page has been saved.the PDF image is disappeared on the new PDF file which I saved.I want to save as PDF file with other PDF image.If you have any idea, please let me know.thanks

Hi All,I am facing an issue while creating the pdf from the book file. I have a book file which consists of multiple chapters some are in the same folder(where book file is present ) and some are in a different folder. I have a cross-reference for every chapter in the book file. But when I run the extends script to create a pdf then pdf created successfully but the cross-reference of those chapters which are in the different folders is broken. Since the first update to FM2019, I've had the text in files turn into garble twice, the first time I closed and reloaded the document - all ok. The second time it stopped scrolling through and FM just closed, no error, no warning.Has anyone else seen this in the latest version?

I'm on a Windows 10 OS, using Frame 2017. I have an unstructured Frame document in this order:paragraph 1paragraph 2paragraph 3paragraph 4paragraph 5Section headparagraph 6When I Save As RTF, paragraph 6 replaces paragraph 4. Then the rest of the document is fine...Section head; paragraph 6, etc.If I retype paragraph 6, then the conversion is fine. I see nothing unusual or weird in the paragraph. Easy fix to retype but I'm wondering if there are problems in the remaining 300 pages. Any way I can narrow this down to find the problem?DM

Hi, FrameMaker downloaded via Creative Cloud on Aug. 7th and installed on the same day.OS is Windows 10.When I opened a book file in FrameMaker and want to "Save as PDF", it always failed. The error message is :I have tried solution 1 in Adobe PDF printer is missing | Manually install PDF printer​ . It didn't work.And for solution 2, I couldn't find  Documents\*.pdf (Adobe PDF) in the drop-down list.The following picture shows the content of distiller.zip in the FrameMaker_15_x64_LREFDJ(1) zip file I downloaded. I only have Adobe Acrobat Reader DC (not Pro), I'd like to know if this error comes from only having Acrobat Reader DC instead of Pro DC?Looking forward to your replies and help.

I have a feeling the answer to this is "you can't", but I'll ask anyway because some of my users don't like this. Neither do I, actually, and I can't figure out why it would happen like this.We have tables with a black border around the outside and a thin grey border separating the rows and columns. The grey row border line intersects and overlays the black table border, so it looks like a series of dashed lines (if you zoom in enough). Oddly, the column borders do not do the same thing: the table border at the top and bottom are uninterrupted. See graphics. So why is this, and is there any way to fix it?

It's late, and I am not sure what the proper way to phrase this is 🙂I need to create a document that includes a table containing device types, their support for features 'A' and 'B', and the regions in which they can be used.I can create a simple table to hold that info, but ... is there a way that a table can be created (or imported, e.g. as an excel spreadsheet or some other file type) that can be dynamically sorted in the pdf output? For example, some users will want to sort on device type (to compare devices from the same product family), others on region (to see which devices can be used in different countries), or function support (A, B, both, or none).Thanks either way 🙂

Occasionally in our manuals we need tabloid 11x17 pages in the middle of a chapter. There can be up to 30 in a row. I have my normal pages with their 8.5x11 master pages. I go to create a new master page and make it 11x17 and it makes all of my master pages 11x17. I do not want this. Anyone experience this same problem or have a different approach?Thanks,Dan

I have been messing around with this and searching for an answer for some time now. I have a book made up of various pages. I have a page called "Details." I would like to link a few words on this page to another page located in the book called "Appendix." I have tried Hypertext and cross-reference methods and cannot get them to work. I can hypertext within the same page. For example; if I have the "Details" page open, I can link a word from page 9 to a page 11 heading. My issue is, I cannot get words from page 9 to page 20 to link. I am using FM19 and currently updated to the latest.

I am using FrameMaker 2019. A png image appears in black shades when I use Print Book command and save print in Adobe PDF format. I tried updating, but no resolution found. Previously when I used to publish the document in pdf format, it used to have blanTitle edited by: Barb Binder

We are writing a manual where we need to be able to cross-reference items in our Illustrated Parts Catalog (IPC). In the IPC sometimes the figure number and the item are the same but the part number is different. Please see the example. 2 is the Figure Number, 1080 is the item number.We need to be able to reference the Figure Number and Item Number within text of other chapters. The problem is, when we go to use the Cross-Reference pod it will show us multiple Figure Numbers and Item Numbers that are the same (because they are). Is there a way we can make a distinction? Say I just want to cross reference Part Number 65258-07065-101 which has the same Figure and Item as the rest? In the text the cross-reference needs to read (Figure 2, Item 1080).Thank you!
