Hi,I'm a newbie trying to unlearn my InDesign mindset to work in FrameMaker. What is best practice for producing figure numbers to accompany diagrams throughout a document? A quick CTRL+F in the Framemaker 12 Help book doesn't seem to point me in a particular direction. Do diagrams need to be inserted into a table, where there is a cell for the image and a cell for the figure details in another? I've read that I should use a letter and colon in the tag to keep it separate from other things that update, e.g. F: (then figure number descriptor). Is there anything else to be aware of, such as when resetting counts for chapters etc? Some details:Framemaker12.There are currently 116 chapters (aviation subjects) to make. Each of these chapters will be its own book in pdf form, some of these chapters run to over 1000 pages.Figure number ideally takes the form: "Figure (a number from one of the 1-116 chapters used) - figure number" e.g. "Figure 34 - 6." would be the the 6th image in the boo
I'd like to be able to sync the personal dictionary between my desktop and laptop computers. Can I put the personal dictionary file in a Dropbox folder, for example?
We just upgraded from Framemaker 7.2 to 12, and there's a behavior I can't figure out. I have a book file with cross-references between FM documents. Before, in FM 7.2, when I used Ctrl/Alt+click to activate a cross-reference link and follow the marker to a different Frame document, it left the original document open, and also opened the document the link caused me to jump to. In FM 12, it is closing the original document every time I click on a link to follow it. Is there a preference setting or another way to stop Frame from closing the first document every time it opens the document the link is referencing?
Hi All,After migrating from Win XP to Win 7, my FM files ver.7.2 has font overlapping issue for 2-byte Traditional Chinese.Besides, I have having problem updating the patch file to p.158 which prompt me that "GetDiskSpace failed". Could anyone help me on the 2 issues above?thank you in advance!regards,Penny
I am trying to set up a PC to build some documents during the night. I was looking for a way to get framemaker to generate PDF and CHM files via a command line in windows? How is this done with FrameMaker 12Thanks for the help Alex
I am using FM 11. I have 18 files with lots of figures and perhaps this is part of my issue. It seems to take between 1 and 2 minutes every time I save. Is there some setting or some trick I can use to shorten the time FM takes to save my book or chapter? Thanks.
I need a home copy/license for home use. How can I get one and from whom?

Hello, is there any way to use OpenType-Functionality in the leatest FrameMaker-Version?
I know...it sounds like a silly question, but let me explain. My client (a government agency) wanted an instructional guide that looked good. I suggested FrameMaker (I have v10) and they said great! 200 pages later they want to be able to edit the document themselves and then send it to me to finalize and print. They now want options on how they can edit. I suggested Adobe Acrobat and they weren't crazy about that idea and now it seems that they may be going backwards to Microsoft Word. So are there any other options? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!Cindy
I am using Adobe Frame 12 license version. After complete registration we use the application about 30 days. After 30 days It shows below message every time it starts. Note: Now we cannot open the application after entering Adobe User ID and password(This Adobe Account)
I really shouldn't have to ask this question … but if I start from adobe.com I bounce back like a sparrow hitting double-glazing: seems the company has/sells a single product called Creative Cloud, and that's it :-}I want to order single-user licences for the following: how do I set about it? the version numbers are indicative, because I'm copy/pasting a list from a while back; obviously, I'm after the latest/current.Adobe Bridge CCAdobe InDesign CCAdobe Illustrator CCAdobe Photoshop CCAdobe Acrobat Pro, version XIAdobe FrameMaker, version 12Thanks in advance for any help on this.
FM 10 is generally stable for me, EXCEPT that one of my files crashes OFTEN and has to be resurrected from a backup. I can't afford to continue in the same pattern of crashing and retrieving backups.I THINK the problem is the complexity of conditional text applied to tables, rows within tables, and figures. And the file has at least two dozen left-over non-used conditions. Now I'm just trying to think of a permanent fix. What do you think is the most useful action: splitting the file into two chapters, deleting unused conditions, using fewer conditions, re-creating tables so that rows don't need conditions, .... ANYTHING ELSE?Thanks in advance.
HelloWhen I import swf files from Captivate 8 into FMkr 12 they have a black border all around them (around all four sides, a thin black line; not H/V black bars like you get with problems with video ratios), so the skin from the captivate file which is green has an unwanted black line around it. They are in an anchored frame that is the same size as the imported file. How do I get rid of that line please? Also any advice on sizing of Captivate files and also MP4 files would be very welcome. I've given up with trying to import mp4.... the sizing and resolution seems completely unrelated to the original size of the files, they come in as miniscule icons, the playbar does its own sweet thing and there seems no method of controlling it. I feel like I must be missing a whole set of dialogue boxes that ought to be there but don't seem to be.... cheersSarah
Using FM 11ExtendScriptWindows 7I'm running an ExtendScript from the FM Startup directory, by starting FM from a batch file. The Extendscript opens multiple book files (one at a time) and does a save as pdf for each one. FrameMaker terminates the script with a timeout error at random points in the script after only one or two saves. The Extendscript runs fine when I run it from the FM Scripting window. It only times out when I run it as a startup script. Is there some workaround for this? Sadly, I find no documentation about this.
FrameMaker 12.0.3.424 unstructured running on Win 64 as part of techsuite 5 is causing me a lot of problems. I am runnig on a brand new machine with 32 gb of ram but it still seems FrameMaker runs very slowly when creating pdf's. Lately it has started behaving weird too. When printing to pdf it does produce a pdf, but the print window showing progress does not shut down making it seem that the printing process is still ongoing. Some files which it printed like a breeze a month ago, now takes for bloody ever.It seems to me that some sort of change has happend to the elements which goes into printing. Maybe there has been an ufortunate update to Distiller. Maybe MS has made an ufortunate update to windows print engine. I don't know, but something has changed I can't figure out why, but it certainly seems to affect printing to pdf in FrameMaker 12.Does anybody share my experience?
In a CALS table (in DITA), the colspec/@colwidth value is written with an "in" suffix. I'd like to use other units (like "mm"). For a frame, equation or facet, you can use the r/w rule of .. specify size in mm;.. to set the units. But this doesn't work for tables (or the colspec element). I've tried setting the global units in the document properties. It shows as "mm" in the UI for setting a column width, but in the XML it's always written out as "in". FM will properly read colwidth values other than "in", but on save they always go back to "in".Have I completely broken something that should work, or is it not possible to set units other than "in"?Thanks!…scott
Hi All,I'm working for a large organization (3000+) that is subdivided into 60+ business units. I'm trying to figure out the workflow for using full FrameMaker to create a template that I can provide my business units to fill in via XML Author, send back to me, and then I can publish into a number of products using the Tech. Comm. Suite. I am somewhat new to XML so I am not sure how to get my structure and format to translate. Can anybody clarify what the general workflow would be for this process? All I have been able to find is the flowchart showing full FM to XML to XML Author and back to full FM. From my test driving of the Tech Comm Suite though it has not appeared that easy.---Corey---
I am unable to install the trial version of Acrobat that comes with the Technical Communication Suite. I have Windows 8.1. I've restarted my computer several times and disabled the virus protection but that did not solve the problem. I also tried running the acropro.msi several times but that did not work either. I get the following message:Exit Code: 6Please see specific errors below for troubleshooting. For example, ERROR: -------------------------------------- Summary -------------------------------------- - 0 fatal error(s), 3 error(s) ----------- Payload: Acrobat Professional 11.0.0.0 {23D3F585-AE29-4670-8E3E-64A0EFB29240} -----------ERROR: Error 1335.The cabinet file 'Data1.cab' required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used. This could indicate a network error, an error reading from the CD-ROM, or a problem with this package.ERROR: Install MSI payload failed with error: 1603 - Fatal error during installation.MSI Error message: Error 1335.The cabinet file 'Data1.cab
Hi all, at least within text paragraphs we would prefer 'clean' XML without carriage returns. Can Framemaker be configured to avoid these control character?Below is an example of a DITA file produced by Framemaker. Evidently this is related to the Pretty Printing feature and I do admit that it increases the readability. However they cause some issues for us. Note that the carriage returns in the paragraph are at arbitrary positions, not at the end of the lines as they appear in the Framemaker editor (I inserted the word "End" at the end of the first line).Robert
So, after months of pushing string, the long-awaited e-mail "we'll be installing your FM 12 tomorrow." Except that the same mail also said "we need to see {person} first." That was last week; still no movement, but at least it gives me time to ask what the latest patches are; and also to ask whether this will be an old-style installation where we install the base product and then patiently add layers of updates in order, or a new-style installation where we automagically pick up the very latest, patched version/release just by clicking on [Download]. All advice welcome.
Hello,I am new to FM and am using FM12.What can cause this error "Cannot display some imported graphics. The images will appear as gray boxes"?All the images in the chapter would show gray boxes. I have tried: - closing FM and retarted -> no help - rebooted computer ->no help - the only way to get all the images back is to use the backup file and rename it.How can I avoid this error? I have run into these a few times now.TIA.Paul
Help please - I am desperate.I have a 2-page toc in a new book. I imported the toc format from a good toc and now page 2 looks great, but I cannot make the leading dots appear on page 1 and I need this damn book in one hour.ThanksPhil
Possible task: generate an order-guide / price-list that pulls all the prices from a master external source, so that prices are always current on re-render.The source might be a database or just a spreadsheet, or perhaps some rendering from same, such as an XML file generated from the source. Obviously, one could import text insets from a multitude of individual files generated from the source; that seems excessive.FM9 has only File > Import > File, and File > Import > Object; and > Object is using OLE . OLE is not an answer (for any question, any time, ever).Writing an FDK extension is probably not an answer. The Adobe marketing pages seem to have some videos that may or may not address the question, but these are disrespectful of the buyer's time, and don't even run on my usual work platform. There are also some whitepapers with titles that hint of perhaps being on topic, but they are all hidden behind equally disrespectful registration dialogs (I'm logged in already, A
Hi all,I'm trying to filter out the first topic in a map using ditaval filtering for the otherprops attribute when creating a composite fm. I'm finding that I can filter tags inside the topic like a table or paragraph. Therefore, I know that my ditaval filters work. But using the same otherprops setting does not work for the topic element. The first topic is always included in the output. Setting the otherprops attribute in the topicref element does not work either as already documented in this forum. When I import the entire map and ditaval into oxygen, the filtering works as expected with first the topic removed.Am I overlooking something? I am using framemaker12.0.2.Thanks for your help.
