Why do documents (pdf) duplicate when creating a password?

Hope you are doing well and thanks for reaching out. 

 

It is the application's design behaviour. Adobe Acrobat Premium and Pro DC subscribers can password-protect PDFs to secure confidential information. Setting a password creates a protected copy without changing the original file.

The answer makes no sense because I want to protect the original. The behavior needs to be upgraded. The whole idea is to protect the document in its original format. Not make a copy to protect and not auto duplicate. I want to protect the original and have that one file not a protected and unprotected that's two files. By the way, my first protected file did not duplicate. So the behavior was fine on first document the following documents duplicated- bad behavior.
