just paid extra for the Adobe Acrobat Reader: Edit PDF.  It said it would be able to read scanned text, so that I could highlight and save and copy - etc.

Doesn't work at all

1) takes 3-5 minutes for it to do some OCR text wizardry.  Sometime this is too much work, and the whole app crashes!  Booo

2) the text never gets hightlighted - the pop up does give me the options, but you can't select the text, as you should be able to, and, in the end, nothing happens

Hi there

Hope you are doing well and sorry for the trouble.

I have checked your Adobe account and found that you have an Acrobat Pro subscription.

When you run OCR (the text recognition process), it can take a while depending on the size/quality of the scanned file and your device’s available memory.

Would you mind sharing the version of the Acrobat Pro and the OS you are using? Go to Help > About Acrobat and make sure its updated to the latest version 25.01.20693. Go to Help > Check for updates and reboot the computer once.

Is this an issue with a particular PDF file or with all the PDFs?  Please try with a different PDF file and check.

If the recognized text layer isn’t working properly:

  • Open the file after OCR completes and zoom in to check if the text layer is actually selectable.

  • If not, try re-running OCR using "Recognize Text" under Tools > Scan & OCR and select the correct language for the document.

  • Also, make sure the scan is clear and not overly skewed/blurry, as this can cause recognition issues.

If you’re working with very large scans, try splitting the file into smaller parts and then running OCR — this often prevents crashes and improves accuracy.

Let us know how it goes.
