Question

Delegation (partial)

Is there a way for a signer to delegate one (not all) of their signature fields?  We have a current scenario whereby we are creating workflow for a template document will be sent externally with two required signature fields.  However, the recipient signer will sign one field and wishes to delegate the second field at the point of receipt, as they will determine the specific signatory each time (i.e., we are not able to assign at the setup stage).  I can only see the option for the recipient to delegate signing for the entire agreement - is there another way?  Thanks.

    Hi @AM_12_MC,

Hope you are doing well. Thanks for writing in!

In Acrobat Sign, delegation works at the agreement (signer) level, not at the individual signature field level.

    This means:

    • A signer can delegate the entire agreement to another person

    • A signer cannot delegate only one of their signature fields

    • All signature fields assigned to a signer are treated as a single responsibility.

From a legal and audit-trail perspective:

    • Each signer is a single participant in the transaction

    • All signature fields assigned to that signer represent their legal intent

    • Allowing partial delegation would break signer accountability and the audit trail

Because of this, Acrobat Sign does not allow:

    • Field-level delegation

    • “Split” responsibility within a single signer role

So, here’s what you can do. Instead of assigning both signature fields to the same signer:

    1. Create two separate signer roles in the template

      • Signer 1: Primary signer

      • Signer 2: Secondary signer (role to be decided later)

    2. Set signing order so:

      • Primary signer signs first

      • Secondary signer signs second

    3. Leave the second signer unassigned at send time

    4. When the agreement is sent, the first signer (or sender) can specify who the second signer will be

    This preserves:

    • A clean audit trail

    • Proper accountability

    • Flexibility at runtime

    Hope this helps.

    Souvik
