Question

text insanely slow to render

i am using AE 2018 v 15.1.2

win 10, core i7 5820k, 64 gb ram, gtx 1070ti

working on a 1920x1080 comp

i have to reveal 30 lines of text with a standard scaling up of every character (very simple stuff). there is nothing else in the comp.

when i ram preview (on a quarter of the resolution) ae gives me a super frustrating 0.2 frame per seconds. How is this even possible????

also i notice on the task manager ae seems unable to use more of 20% of the cpu.

Text is very slow for me too on AE 2020... one layer of imported video and ONE line of text. Cache is on a dedicated SSD, GPU enabled... on AE 2018 I did a very complicated text animation with dozens and dozens of lines of text, same computer, everything was fine.  On 2020 I can barely type it's that slow. I just timed it at 4 seconds per letter to just type! It's insane, I've just finished a ten minute animated sitcom, all in AE, hundreds of layers, but adding a simple line of text is slowing it down. Generally I've found performance a bit slower in 2020 than I'm used to, but this text thing is ridiculous.

Yes I also have the same problem, the lag doesn't even let me move any object around, the font I was using was the famous Apple font "SF Pro text", after I changed to any other font or converted the text to shape!, everything got back to normal.

I had the exact same problem. While making a video to present an application, everything was very slow. I was using the Apple font SF PRO  font. As soon as I changed to another font. Everything worked just fine

The problem is definitely the text. when i have text in my comp everything becomes unresponsive, laggy and slow render.

i am not doing anything fancy, i am just animating random lines of code. it is as if the text object is insanely slow. even if i type the world "Hello" i can clearly see the performance dropping, if i convert the text "Hello" to shape layer everything runs better

    Have you tried different fonts?

yes i did, some fonts are slower than others, but overall still unaccettable, this program should be able to handle more than 30 lines of text

Start by checking your GPU acceleration settings and what comp renderer you are using. Either you GPU is unable to render things like motion blur correctly in realtime, thus creating a performance bottleneck or you have set your comp renderer to Raytrace 3D or Cinema 4D, both of which also may only run in slow software-only modes.

i think you are right it might be a gpu issue. (i dont have motion blur, or ray trace or c4d files, just a very simple ae scene)

5 minutes after my post, ae just stopped giving me previews, in any comp and in any project just gey screen.

so i restarted and now it works.

Basically when i fire up ae everything seems fine....then the more i work the more it slows down.

How did you made the text-animation? Did you use one of the animation presets or is every letter a separate layer with scale animation?

I the second case, the low performance sounds normal.
