How to Force Break a Link

I have an older InDesign file that has a .doc file linked to all the text. If I relink the .doc file it completely hoses up the layout, fonts, etc. As long as that link remains broken then the file is okay, but every time I open the file it wants to relink to it. So, I deleted the original .doc file from the Links folder.

I am wondering if I can permanently remove the link from the links menu so I'm no longer prompted to relink it?

The .doc file is linked to the entirety of the text so there's no actual file to delete in the Indesign document.

    Hi shannonwbrown ,

    if nothing helps:

    1. Cut the text of that linked story to the clipboard

    2. Paste into a new text frame

    3. Now try to relink to a different doc ( no contents ) with the same name.

    4. Unlink that link.

    5. Copy/paste the text back to the threaded text frames that are now empty.

    If that does not help:

    6. Remove all text frames of that story and build your threaded text frames annew from the frame you pasted the text in.

    Regards,
    Uwe

Right-click menu on a doc file entry in your Links panel > choose Unlink command.

I am not given that option (see screenshot below):

Hm, it must be here, right below Go To Link.

Trashing Preferences usually helps to fix quirks of this kind.
