How to view entire image (without invoking Edit Original)?

Select the cropped image inside its container frame.

Copy it and then do Paste in Place.

Select the image with the Direct Selection tool, and duplicate the colored dots in the Layers panel by option+dragging (on a Mac) to the top layer. Undo or delete when you are done.

You can click on the Fit Frame to Content button in the Control bar (it might also be in the Properties bar, something this old fart has yet to get comfortable with). Then undo.

If you select the an image with the Direct Selection tool and hold down you can see the entire image if it has been cropped, unfortunately you can't see the entire image if it's behind other objects though.
