Latest in design file vanished

Hi,

I have been working on a magazine, putting in very long hours. I have clicked into the file thumbnail and it opens up a old version. The thumbnail contains the new cover but it keeps opening up a version from a few weeks ago with the old cover. I've looked everywhere for it but it seems to have disappeared.

thank you,

Ist das eine lokal gespeicherte Datei oder vom einem Server oder Cloud?

Hast du kein Backup dieser Datei??

It was locally stored as well me saving it to my Google drive folder, this was so I could access it via my laptop, but I must have not updated it and saved it locally as I was using my pc for a few weeks and didn't need my laptop . I also exported it to pdf on the same day and days before that I was on the file on and off. I don't understand why a real old file is the only one that loads up when I  worked on the latest magazine edition not long ago. Confused .

The danger of keeping multiple copies of the same file, created at different times and possibly having different updates is a lack of version control. Without version control, you have the possibility of copying over a new file with an older one. I'm not working with you, so I can't confirm that's what happened. But if you asked me, it's highly likely that's what happened to you. And if that's the case, your updated version may well be unavailable.

If you're lucky, there may be a later version of the file somewhere that can get you partway — or maybe even all the way — back. Do not open the files again within InDesign until after you do the following procedure. Search both computers for the filename, and then either use the Get Info (Mac) or the Properties (Windows) menu command when you click the right mouse button on the file. Pay close attention to the Last Updated: notation. The one with the latest date is the latest version. Good Luck on this; hopefully you will get lucky.

Lots of InDesign users will save multiple versions of jobs and name the files with version numbers and dates, to help prevent mixups during production. First, it's always better to have at least two of 'em than none of 'em. And second, you can tell which version of the job is the latest without even opening the file. When the job is done, you can keep PDFs of each version and delete the earlier versions of the InDesign job when archiving the work folder(s).

    Hope this helps,
