Text Disappearing and limited Undos in InDesign CC

I recently upgraded to Creative Cloud. I have a iMac Processor 2.66 GHz Intel Core i5 I upgraded the OS to 10.9.1 a couple of months ago in preparation. In the InDesign 9.2 CC. My text randomly disappears while I am working on it. I have to click off it then click back where I think it is and send to the front to get it back. Sometimes just zooming in and out will bring it back or other various things. It is not actually deleting the text just the view of it, but I can't work on it if I can't see it. It is really annoying and cutting into my productivity. Has anyone else had this problem? Also, I am unable to do more than 1 or 2 undos where as in CS 5 I could do multiple undos. Is that normal for CC? Is there somewhere you can set the number of undos? I could not find anything under preferences. This is also a problem as I am used to being able to go back a few steps when I change my mind on something.

Any help on either issue would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I too have been experiencing the disappearing text issue as well as the limited undo issue. I suspect that this problem is not really file-specific or machine-specific, but is associated with processor usage/memory availability; just now I was working on a file and noticed I was down to only one undo. At the time I had lots of other applications running in the background. I closed everything and restarted, then did a test with a fresh inDesign doc, and I was able to undo 33 times (that's as many actions as I had executed in my test file.) I suspect that the disappearing text is happening for the same reason, BDinkar, so if you are trying to replicate these issues, please try maxing out your machine's processing capabilities to see if that makes a difference.

... And once you’ve managed to replicate these issues, BDinker, figure out why there are issues when none existed in previous, earlier versions of InDesign.

(Shouldn’t the latest, most “improved” versions of apps work better than the apps they replace?)

UPDATE

I eagerly updated Adobe InDesign CC 2014 this morning (to version 10.0.0.70) in the hopes that it would solve some of these chronic problems. Unfortunately, it did not. I’m typing this post as I wait for InDesign to relaunch — it crashed while performing a routine spell check on a paragraph of text (even rickety Microsoft Word can manage that without crashing). Also, at the time InDesign crashed, I was down to zero undos.

I'm having the same issue. Does anyone know if Indesign CC 2014 fixes this issue?

Linda --

In response to your inquiry, I can tell you that InDesign CC 2014 absolutely DOES NOT fix this issue. In fact, I never experienced this issue until “upgrading” from CS6 to CC 2014.

These software bugs are chronic and very disruptive; they severely hamper productivity. As this thread indicates, many professional, subscription-paying customers are negatively impacted on a daily basis with no end in sight. We have been waiting for help from Adobe, but thus far, all they can tell us is that they can’t reproduce these problems in their labs. Really Adobe?

THE FIX to stop the text from disapearing

Go to indesign preferences / Interface / changed hand tool to greek setting (not sure if that is important / live screen drawing to IMMEDIATE. restarted Indesign and the problem has not come back. Been about an hour working with indesign and so far so good.

report back now been about a week since I did this and PROBLEM IS GONE

Sorry but this may work for you but my settings are already set to IMMEDIATE and I still have the problems. Anyway this is not a settings issue and there won't be a quick fix, this is an inherent problem with the software that Adobe need to address. Adobe?

Same "disappearing text" and inability to do multiple "undos" as everyone reports here. Also there is a delay when I switch between the selection tool and the text tools. Also exporting to pdf is slow. Overall performance is sluggish.

I spent a whole afternoon with Adobe support trying various things to no avail; such as trashing Preferences, reinstalling InDesign (both versions 9 and 10). When those didn't work, I logged in under a new User account and transferred my work files over. Initially the problem went away, but sure enough, it returned after a couple of days.

I'm using ID 9.2.2 on OSX 10.9.4.

The clincher is that we are all paying monthly fee for this aggro, as well as lost productivity. Will Adobe be offering some kind of rebate? I'm going back to using InDesign 6.

The monthly sub should be discounted while this is sorted. But of course it won't.

This saved me! I am using CC 2015 on Yosemite and was experiencing the disappearing text even in this version. I could not imagine the bug was still around. All I had to do, though, was set the Live Screen Drawing to "Immediate." I did not have to restart or change anything else. Live Screen Drawing was set to "Delayed," but in fact there was no delay. I had to click outside the text box and back in again to see the text again. Now all works fine. Thanks Logoking!

Same issue very frustrating, you type a line of text then it disappears zoom out it come back, insert curser type a word disappears, and so forth nothing specific that makes it come and go just general working with files this problem occurs on all my indesign job, I am saving to my hard drive. I have had this problem for months now, Quark beginning to feel like an option if this doesn't get sorted.

My dear friends at Adobe, maybe it's time you stopped waiting for us, your customers, to come to you with a solution.  Why don't you get out and ask some users if they are having this problem and try to find what is the issue?  Maybe that way you will learn just how common it is.  I will bet a large amount of money that this issue occurs a lot, but that people don't think to report it.

If I may add to Bernard22091950’s comments ...

Tell us that you’re working on solutions to these problems … tell us that you’re stumped and can’t figure out what’s cause these problems … heck, even tell us that we’re out of luck because you have no intention of trying to solve the problems. But please: don’t tell us these problems are unique to a handful of users, or that you’ve never heard of them, or that you can’t recreate them, or that we should try to solve them ourselves and let you know what we learn. We’ve been reporting these same problems for months. They’re inherent to the products, not unique to a few odd users.

Tell us that you – Adobe – are working on solutions in an effort to satisfy your paying customers. Period.

Hello All,

We are really very sorry about the trouble you all are facing because of this issue.

It would be really helpful if few of you can spare some time and work with us so that we can narrow down this problem. If you are able to reproduce this problem consistently then please write to us on sharewithID@adobe.com. We will then work with you over a connect session depending upon your convenient time.

Thanks,

Dinkar

I haven't noticed the spell check crashing - I will take note. Still have text vanishing and undo issues. In fact these are probably costing me more than my monthly fee in hours lost - it's that debilitating at times. I hope it gets sorted soon.

Agreed. Debilitating. Frustrating. Counterproductive. Unacceptable.

I'm debating whether or not to simply cut my losses, uninstall InDesign CC 2014 and go back to InDesign CS6.

I stole this from an earlier post and only updated the date, but I have having the same issues:

August 5, 2014:

These three problems persist when using Adobe CC 2014 on my computer:

  1. I am unable to perform multiple undos.
  2. Text randomly disappears from view within text frames.
  3. Performing routine spell checks cause the application to crash.

(I took the time to post this update as I wait for InDesign to relaunch after crashing during a routine spell check.)

Has there been any new info or updates? The disappearing text has been a constant issue for me, but the multiple undos just started today and is the reason I found this forum. The spell check problem has only happened a few times for me.

mrslick, I have not found a way to avoid these issues. The following three debilitating issues continue to plague me on a daily basis:

  1. I am unable to perform multiple undos.
  2. Text randomly disappears from view within text frames.
  3. Performing routine spell checks cause the application to crash.

In fact ...

Once again, I took the time to post this update as I wait for InDesign to relaunch after crashing during a routine spell check.
