Text Disappearing and limited Undos in InDesign CC

I recently upgraded to Creative Cloud. I have a iMac Processor 2.66 GHz Intel Core i5 I upgraded the OS to 10.9.1 a couple of months ago in preparation. In the InDesign 9.2 CC. My text randomly disappears while I am working on it. I have to click off it then click back where I think it is and send to the front to get it back. Sometimes just zooming in and out will bring it back or other various things. It is not actually deleting the text just the view of it, but I can't work on it if I can't see it. It is really annoying and cutting into my productivity. Has anyone else had this problem? Also, I am unable to do more than 1 or 2 undos where as in CS 5 I could do multiple undos. Is that normal for CC? Is there somewhere you can set the number of undos? I could not find anything under preferences. This is also a problem as I am used to being able to go back a few steps when I change my mind on something.

Any help on either issue would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi,

For limited undo, you can try this:

Go to ~/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign/Version 9.0

Access hidden user library files | Mac OS 10.7 and later

Rename Version 9.0 or 10.0 to old Version 9.0 or 10.0 ( depends on the version of application you are using)

Also found online a plugin MultiDo

Thanks for the advice, Psynikk. While a third-party plugin might solve the problem of not being able to perform multiple undos, it's ridiculous that Adobe can't correct it. I updated InDesign CC 2014 six days ago; the update did exactly nothing to solve these chronic, annoying issues.

And let me add one more InDesign problem: during 80-90% of the occasions I perform a spell check in InDesign, the program hitches on a word and crashes. Really? C'mon, Adobe.

You can use the link for feature request.

https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform&loc=en

You can mention what you want in the application to be fixed and submit it.

It's more than a month since Adobe posted in this thread.  Surely they realise that this is a critical issue?  Come the day that someone can break Adobe's monopoly and we have software supplier that genuinely in interested in its clients.

I am experiencing the same problems that Gridirect described in his original, unsolved post from nearly six months ago:

  1. I am only permitted one undo.
  2. My text randomly disappears as I'm editing, which forces me to click out of the text box or adjust my page magnification or select another tool. This happens nearly all the time.

For the record, I NEVER experienced either problem on any previous version of InDesign -- this problem appeared the moment I transitioned from CS6 to CC 2014 (within the past two weeks). My platform is a Mac Pro w/ 2x2.8 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processor and 4 GB of ram running OS X 10.9.4. I don't use any Extensis products and I never work on a network. In response to BDinkar's questions:

  • Are you opening or saving the file to a network?
I am opening files from and saving files to my computer's hard disc only.
  • When undo is disabled, are you able to Save/SaveAs your file?
Undo is never completely "disabled," InDesign allows me to undo my most recent action ONLY (welcome back to 1993). I am still able to save/save as.
  • Is this happening with a particular file? if yes could you please share the file @sharewithID@adobe.com
No -- it's any file I open or any new file I create. It's universal.
  • What happens when you create a new document and then work on it? Does undo stop working on a new document too?
Yes. And again, undo doesn't "stop working," it works fine. Once. Then if I continue working, I can undo my latest action again. Once.

Please advise. I'm considering reverting back to CS6, which worked flawlessly. Thanks.

What's the word on this problem?  The disappearing text is annoying to say the least, but the undo issue is a MAJOR problem.  PLEASE FIX or update us if there is a solution.

Same problem here with disappearing text and 1 level of undos. I find zooming in or out temporarily fixes the text appearance, but not a permanent fix.

The Undo thing is a major problem. C'mon Adobe, please fix.

I am having the same issue with both undo and disappearing text on selection.

In my case this didn’t start happening till upgrading to CC2014 previously it was fine.

It is also only occurring on 1 of our 5 macs all of which are identical models with same software setup.

Very annoying!

FTR - Mac 10.9.3. Just upgraded all my Adobe suite - InDesign 10.0.0.70. Text is still disappearing!?

I'm working on a job right now and it's a real pain - I also have no undos at all, meaning effectively I'm losing time by the bucket loads. Guys and girls at Adobe - this is getting VERY frustrating.

I'm adding my voice to the call for a fix.

I'm using InDesign CC 9.2.1 on Mavericks 10.9.3 and I've just encountered the disappearing text in a simple document — basically a letter, one main text frame apart from heading and contact details, no effects or text wraps or anything else unusual. I've used versions of this file many times before, just editing the text and saving as new file, without any issues, but suddenly now every time I type into the text frame the text disappears while I type. It was even working before — the bug cropped up in the middle of working on the file. Also, so far it seems to only affect this particular file. I've opened up one or two other recent documents (much more complex layouts), and they work just fine.

I don't have a problem with Undo — I still have multiple undos available to me. I've also found two workarounds that work for me:

  1. Edit the text in the Story window (CMD-Y). Not ideal because the document window gets an ugly un-anti-aliased appearance while doing this, and I'm much more comfortable formatting and editing the text directly in its location, but at least it stays visible while typing.
  2. Turn on Overprint Preview (CMD-Opt-Shift-Y). Also not ideal because the display slows down significantly, but at least while typing this isn't too noticeable, and again, the text is visible throughout.
