Adobe Lightroom Classic - Unusably Slow Export 2019

Dear Adobe Community... I'm hoping you can help.

I am running Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic 9.1 (Camera RAW 12.1) on my ageing Macbook Pro.

It may be a relic, but my trusty Macbook Pro has been a very high performing relic for a number of years, including very fast image processing via past versions of Lightroom ... until now.

I run a 15" 2013 Macbook Pro Retina, 2.8GHz quad-core Intel i7 with 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 Memory & NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 / Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB MB Graphics Processor and a  751.07 GB Apple SSD.

Less than 12 months ago Lightroom worked near flawlessly, albeit a bit slow on the larger RAW NEF file sizes encountered by my Nikon Z7 and Nikon D850 camera's.

However over the past 12 months the export process has been slowing to a point whereby now it is damned near unuseable. A single file is taking more than a minute to process....and the same file in photo mechanic is taking a number of seconds.

It's easy to assume this is to do with the computer specs... however the ability for Photo Mechanic or Capture 1 to process the images near instantaneously suggests this is an Adobe issue or a Lightroom settings issue.

I tried performing a 1000 NEF export overnight, simultaneously exporting x4 individual export processes, something I could do in previous Lightroom iterations happily, however on returning to my laptop this morning, (8 hours later) it had exported less than 200 of the intended 4000 image export... Less than 200 images in 8 hours???

If I go back into my catalogue, even during export, (Catalogue has only 5000 images in it) I can preview, tag, organise and edit as per normal... it is simply the export process that is failing.

I have tried clearing caches,  switching between Auto Custom & Off on the 'Use Graphics processor' setting in Preferences/performance. I have shut down and restarted the computer, restarted lightroom and optimized the catalogue.

This issue is now at a crux pont whereby the benefits of lightroom's editing process is being outweighed by the issues surrounding the export and so I am hoping somebody out there in cyber-space can help.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions,

Cheers

Mark

Just For anybody's interest... I upgraded my Macbook to a 2018 2.9Ghz 6-core intel i9 w 32GB RAM and 1TB SSD running Mac OS Catalina... and faster, but still issues. 15 seconds per photo and the 'preparing to export' pop up hangs even though export is being undertaken (meaning I cannot use lightroom) ... there's definitely some funny business going on with exports at the moment (and this is a new computer with a new program downloaded directly from Adobe CC and so should not have any issues whatso-ever.

It could be a bad card reader, or a bad connection to the camera via USB cable, or a bad camera card.

Please check that.

Thanks for your input but I think you might have misread my concern -  this is an export issue, referencing the original files on either an external thunderbolt RAID system, or the internal SSD, originally shot on multiple cameras and multiple cards and directly imported to the RAID or SSD ...  the process in question is exporting to the Macbook's SSD. Thanks

And 4th, have you considered resetting the Lightroom Classic preference file? This is Adobe speak for deleating the preference file, then letting Lightroom Classic recreate it.

The preference file can get corrupted. If so, it causes odd behaviors. Resetting the preference file is a common go to for issues. Should probably be accomplished instead of or at least before attempting a magical uninstall/cleanup/reinstall.

Be warned, resettting the preference file may/will result in LRC forgetting what catalog you had previously opened (so remember to wright down catalog name/location). And, various settings in Preferences will revert to defaults (so look at your preferences, jot down the settings)

Thanks for all your help David... Just a heads up that I tried all your tricks and unfortunately no performance increase at all... It is taking 50 seconds to convert and export a single Nikon NEF file to a JPG (all using the internal Mac SSD). Let me know if you think of anything else?

Third, has your anti virus/Firewall/Internet security app changed if any (yes, mostly a Windows thing, but some people do use these on MACs despite what they are told)

What product?

... no changes.

Second up, did not see your MACOS in your posting (the System Info will provide that, as well as other bits of info)

But if Catalina, make sure Lightroom Classic can access all files and folders.  Outside if LRC, on your MAC bring up System Preferences, select Security and Privacy, scroll down to File and Folders, make sure LRC can access all those boxes.

... running Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.6 (I'll take a look at whether there's an issue - thanks)

My bad, MACOS in your Sys Info, maybe a timing issue with reply's seen vs reply's sent. The Files and Folders is a Catalina issue. Catalina all about cyber security.

First up, please share your System Information as Lightroom Classic (LRC) reports it.

In LRC click on Help, click on System Info, click on Copy. Paste that into a reply. Include info from first line down to just past plug-in info.

Hi David: Here's the information as requested:

Just FYI: I have created a new catalogue on my SSD, original raw files on SSD and exporting to same SSD just to see if I could speed the process up... no luck. Just took 55 secs to process a single raw file. About to delete and rebuild preferences.
