Lightroom Classic Beachball Frustration...

I'm using Lightroom 8.1 with Camera Raw 11.1 but since upgrading to MacOS 10.14 Mojave on my iMac I have experienced numerous occasions where Lr hangs whilst creating a Panorama or an HDR image. It's so frustrating!

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Lightroom but it's still doing it. Quite often the Panorama window will appear and may even preview successfully but during the process of completing the build the progress bar won't go any further. Despite the mouse cursor still being able to move I often have to force quit Lightroom to escape but on several occasions I actually have to force shut down the iMac because I can't switch applications even though I can still move the mouse.

This has happened with and without the "Use Graphics Processor" ticked in the Lr preferences.

I hope someone can help me escape my beachball woes.

So it hangs during panorama or HDR creation? That has nothing to do with the GPU support being turned on or off, the resolution of the screen or anything else like that. It also is not Mojave as I run on Mojave with a 4K display and have none of these problems. What I can advise here is to try resetting your Lightroom preferences(How to set Lightroom Classic CC preferences ). This can solve strange random problems like this one. Also, check whether the permissions are set correctly on the disk/folder where your images are (you need read and write access) and run a disk utility first aid on the disk that contains the images you are merging.

Lastly, and this is a far shot, how much free space do you have on your startup disk? Lightroom writes temporary files on the startup disk for HDR and panorama creation. Somebody else here ran into a crashing problem when generating panoramas even though all his images and catalog were on a big external disk but the internal disk did not have enough space to store the temporary files.

P.S. your Camera RAW CACHE looks fine, remember to purge the CACHE on occasion.

Ok, on the 5K Retina monitor. Big Big problem is that Apple does not actually provide the capability to run the display at a lower resolution, it uses some tech to scale the image displayed down, altering pixels displayed and fonts (size) used. End result, Lightroom still renders the previews to 5K resolution.

Now Lightroom has issues starting at 4K, getting extremely worse at 5K due to the size of the previews it renders for these large resolutions. Just eats and eats up time.

To add to the confusion, what is used in the Library module for previews is not the same for Develop module previews. And so one workaround may help the Library Module, but not the Develop module. Your Photo merge issue involves the Develop Module.

Workarounds I have noticed on the web (but I can not test)

1. For Library module, in Catalog Settings, File handling tab, reduce Standard Preview size down to something in the 2K area, and perhaps preview quality to Medium.

2. For the Develop module, some say to not display Lightroom in a full size window. Shrink the window down.

3. And, perhaps (I have had no feedback on if this is useless) In Finder navigate in Applications to the "Lightroom Classsic CC.app", right click, get info, Check the box "Open in low Resolution"

Good thoughts. I doubt #1 would work as HDR and Panorama don't use previews at all, but #2 and #3 might work.

Agreed, #1 has nothing to do with Photo Merge.(sort of stated that backwards end of paragraph 3)

Interested to see if #3 actually does anything. My Mac Book Pro (15" Retina) is only 2880-by-1800, so while I can run an external monitor much higher (GPU supports), it would not be the same thing. Now I have done #3 on my MAC Book, it has not hurt anything.

There is my System Info and here is a screenshot of my Camera Raw Cache Settings...

I increased it from 5GB to 50GB in the hope it would fix the problem.

You see I have Use Graphics Processor ticked but even when I untick it the problem remains, is it better to leave it on or off?

What else can I do to try and fix it?
