MacBook and Lightroom classic tethering issues

Since Lightroom classic has updated so I no longer need to change to Rosetta to tether, I'm having so many issues. It will not detect my camera without having to switch off the MacBook and make 20 attempts to get it to connect. And then when it does connect it will suddenly disconnect and I'm unable to get it to reconnect. My colleague is having the same issues. We've tried new tether cables and nothing works.

canon 5d mkiv, MacBook Pro m1

Anyone else having these issues and found a workaround?

Im shocked this is still an issue. I recently convereted from PC to Mac and noticed this teathering issue with Mac. I never had an issue running windows. It always connected. Both my R5 and R3 do this.  Yes removing the card helps but the point is to have that backup.  If Windows can do it then why is there an issue with Mac.  I feel its the way Apple reads the card and this draws some kind of conflict with LR

All firmware is updated. A few years ago I tried this and returned the mac (m2). I now have the m4 max and issues is still there.  Several different cables used (tethertools, area 51, others etc.  All the same issue.

I have the same issue.I have spent 2 weeks with support with 3 agents, they took all my logs and screenshots to send to enginerring team.At the end they closed my case and gave me a useless link to follow. The worst support experience ever.

I suddenly started having issues again for an entire day and then suddenly
it started working. Turns out it was because I deleted stuff from my memory
card. Apparently it’s a known issue if your memory cards are too full.

You can try these methods if you’re having issues:

1. Remove the memory card and/or start with an empty memory card
2. Close competing software. Make sure that you don't have anything else
open that tethers
3. Turn off power delivery in your camera settings if you use a usb-c
tether cord that also charges the camera. If that's not an option, use a
one-way delivery cable from your camera, that way it won't be competing
within the cord itself
4. Shoot to your internal hard drive rather than an external hard drive.

Hope this helps someone.

Adobe have never got Lightroom Tethering to be reliable. Why I have no clue. I have spent 100's of dollars on Capture One just to use to Tether too. Cost me money but saved me from going mad.

Yes Capture One has got tethered shooting pretty well sorted: in fact I still use it for tethered shoots and then pass the files onto LR for editing.
Was thinking of trying out Nikon tethering app. They've just released a new version.
BTW why am I being forced to restart LR in Rosetta to use tethering???

In my search for the 'prefect tethering solution' I have found one thing that has a big effect on stability of the tethering experience.
I use a 5m tether cable (one of the better ones from TetherTools) to connect my Nikons (D850 / Z7ll) to an M MacBook Air (OS Sonoma ).
We are often told to connect the cable directly to the input port on the computer BUT I have found that it vastly improves the stability and transfer speed if I use a powered hub; simply connecting the computer charger to one input and the tether cable to another and then plugging the hub into the power port of the computer.
Not only does this keep the computer charged and the camera but image transfers become much more stable and faster.
I just tried it out on Nikon's FX Tether program which continually dropped the connection and it works there too; I know it works well on Capture One and I will do a full test on Lightroom when I next get an opportunity.

I note that people are reporting that Rosetta is no longer required to use tethering in the new LR but as soon as I plug in my Nikon Z7 it requires me to restart in Rosetta.
Im using the latest LR ... Am I missing something ??

I have the same problem and I am on the latest Sonoma with everything updated, I am using a Canon R5 with latest FW. It is insane that Adobe has not resolved this yet as they are supposedly targeting a professional market! I guess I have to be shooting using EOS software for tethering? How can we raise awareness of this problem to Adobe and the other customers?

I even had a support agent controlling my Mac trying to figure it out for an hour, but he gave up and just quit.

I have no issues connecting an R5 to a Macbook M1 machine running Sonoma (14.2.1).  The connection happens in under a second.  I've also tested a 5DMKIV, and it behaves similarly.

You may want to follow the troubleshooting steps in this document: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/troubleshoot-tethered-capture-lightroom.html

Update: 4/9 - I tested 5DMKIV, R5, and Sonoma 14.4.1 on two separate MacBook Pro M1—there were no connection issues.

Weird thing that the Adobe support agents can't help then. They've tried
everything, the camera shows in the system profiler, tethering works with
EOS software and just doesn't with Adobe.

Welcome to the Lightroom Community @kirstineWalton. I'll need more info to help you figure this out.

What version of Lightroom Classic & macOS are you working on?

Try these variables to begin troubleshooting:

  • Confirm if the SD card is plugged into the camera.
  • Reboot the Camera while keeping Lightroom Classic in 'scan mode' for the camera.
  • If you're using an input hub for the mac, try plugging in the cable directly into the available ports on the MacBook.
  • Insert an empty SD Card into the cameras before connecting the camera with Lightroom Classic.

Check this article for more steps to troubleshoot tethering: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/troubleshoot-tethered-capture-lightroom.html

Let me know how it goes from here.

Thanks!

I’ll need to confirm which OS and Lightroom classic versions but they
should be the latest ones as it auto updates.

I do have an SD card and CF card in the camera, I don’t use a hub, I tether
direct with a cable. I have tried switching the camera on and off multiple
times.

This issue started about 3-4 weeks ago so guessing it is due to an update.

Thanks

Just to confirm I am on OS Ventura 13.2.1 and LRC 12.2.1. I'm still constantly having issues. If anything it has gotten worse. It struggles to detect my camera. I have tried two cameras, two different tethering cables, different ports on the mac. I have tried switching the camera off, and sometimes it makes LRC crash and close.

Try rolling back to LR 12.1.
