Since the latest versions of Lightroom Classic and MacOS the masking of people always shows “No people found” – even on photos where it was working before.

This is a known issue with the GPU drivers of your AMD Radeon Pro 5500 XT. I’m not sure if there is a fix. GPU drivers cannot be updated independently from a MacOS update. There is a very long thread on this already:

I am experiencing a critical issue with the "Select People" masking feature in Lightroom Classic.

    System Specs:

Hardware: iMac 27-inch (Intel), AMD Radeon Pro 5500 XT 8GB

    OS: macOS Tahoe 26.4.1

    LR Version: Latest (v15.2.1)

    The Problem:
Since April, the AI masking says "No people found" on all portrait photos. This feature worked perfectly on the exact same iMac until late March.

What I've tried so far (and failed):

Clean reinstalled Lightroom and Camera Raw.

Deleted 'CameraRaw' settings folder in Application Support.

Formatted the SSD and reinstalled macOS.

My MacBook Air M5 identifies people instantly with the same settings/version, but my Intel iMac does not.

Is this a known driver compatibility issue between the latest Adobe AI engine and Intel/AMD GPUs on macOS Tahoe? Any help would be appreciated.

Same problem here with iMac 2020 (intel i7 with AMD PRO 5500 XT 8Gb) and Tahoe 26.4. Tried everything but nothing works. However on my MacBook Air M1 it does work!. Problem seems to be with INTEL Mac?

We've been dealing with this problem for a while now, and Adobe doesn't have a solution. Do you think they'll find one?

if it's anything like the last two times this happened, they will release an update around the same time Apple releases one and say Apple fixed it. that took almost 7 months. it's an issue with adobe, if it was an apple driver issue then none of the smart making features would work not just people masking. I updated to Tahoe and it was fine, then I updated Lightroom to 15.2 and it got borked

Camera Raw Masking is “Unable to select people in this photo.” in almost every photo, including ones where there are CLEARLY visible people. I am having the same issue on both my 2020 iMac and my 2024 MacBook so I opened up Lightroom Classic (which I hate using) just to test it, and I got the same thing over there, “No people found.” I have attached screenshots of the system info for both machines as well as examples that show it happening in a photo where the people should be easily found.

In Camera Raw, I Reset GPU Support, shut down the program, and restarted my computer, and it’s still present. I don’t really know which recent update started it, as I have been spending my off-season blowing through my backlog of unedited personal family snapshots which don’t require masking. Off-season is over now, though, and I really need this fixed.

    Hi michelegranja,

It is still not resolved for me.

I have been working on solving the problem for a few days now.

I read somewhere online that it might have something to do with full disk access in LRC.

I find this very annoying and hope that it will be fixed in a future update!

@René26819315d930 It isn’t resolved for anyone with an Intel processor yet. They gave me a fix that *mostly* resolved the issue for my Silicon MacBook with said the Intel processor issue is “being worked on”.

(NOW, because I am always jumping back and forth between the 2 machines trying to get SOME kind of work done, they have the nerve to incessantly reset my password, giving me errors that “someone else is using my computer”… even though it is only activated on the 2 devices I am allowed. We can’t win for losing with these Adobe people.)

Hi @Captainpenguin, Welcome to the Lightroom Community forum! To better help you with this issue, we would like a few more details. Can you send your system info, a screen recording of the issue, and a numbered list of the exact steps needed to replicate it? You can find your system info by going to Help > System Info, copying and pasting it into a text file, and attaching it here. Thanks! ^CH

Hey, @Captainpenguin. Thanks for adding the System info. Two things I’d like to point out.

    • Your catalog is in a folder that syncs to OneDrive. This can lead to database corruptions, as well as the issues you’re seeing. Try moving the catalog to a non-sync folder, and check if Lightroom behaves better.
    • The GPU on your machine isn’t supported/unrecognized by Lightroom Classic. Newer & demanding features such as ML Masking, & the Remove tool will fail to work if the GPU isn’t correctly configured. Please follow the steps here to troubleshoot the GPU on your machine: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/troubleshoot-gpu.html#:~:text=Update%20your%20graphics%20card%20driver.

    Thanks!

@sirthrosturv, @Hot Tubs Oxfordshire, there are many reports that People masking fails on Intel Macs with Mac OS 26.3, and the evidence strongly points at a buggy AMD graphics driver released in 26.3:

While waiting for Apple and AMD to release a fixed driver, try this workaround:

@Hot Tubs Oxfordshire I intalled Mac OS Sequoia on an external drive (since it appears impossible to downgrade Tahoe) and people detection is no an issue when runnig Lightroom under that OS on the iMac.

That’s further evidence it’s a bug in the Mac OS 26.3 AMD graphics driver.
