Question

DSLR In-Camera "HDR" (Composite of 3 exposures in 1 .DNG raw file) data not interpreted?

Hi,

I'm troubleshooting an issue opening, viewing, and editing RAW .dng files that were taken using my camera's automatic in-camera "HDR" shooting mode. This mode functions by taking 3 bracketed exposures at different EV settings and then combining the multiple shots into a single .dng container.

Windows and google photo editors correctly interpret this data, but no adobe products (LR mobile, desktop, photoshop camera RAW latest version) do. When I open the .dng in any compatible adobe product, I only see data from one of the exposures, not the merged version.

When asking around so far, I have heard this is unsupported completely, and I must take bracketed separate exposures and then HDR combine in post if I want to have editing capabilities in Adobe software. Is this correct? Seems strange such a common shooting mode/feature on DSLRs and mirrorless digital cameras would be unsupported...

Here is a link to a sample RAW file, attached JPG previews to show the difference.

This is the first I recall seening a comment where a DSLR combines multiple exposures into a single file. So I am not sure how common this is. I was a Canon DSLR user for twenty years before recently switching to Sony. Both of those brands when doing braketed shots place each image in separate files. You then select the images to merge in Lr. This has paid off multiple times where I might do five shots separated by 1 EV, and find that the top end might be blown out and actually makes a worse merge.

Note: This is different then pixel shifting that my Sony does, which is not supported either.
