Photoshop Crashing and freezing on launch

If the PC goes to the sleep modus is Photoshop running in the moment?

What happens when you "wake up the PC" and wait for approx. 5 minutes and the start Photoshop? Does Photoshop already freeze? Sometimes it takes time until all components and services are fully running after the wake up from sleep mode.

When Photoshop freezes, the entire PC is also frozen so I can't do anything.  When Photoshop closes, the PC becomes available again.  I'm not sure what I would be looking for in the task manager or the log file.  I did have a look in the log and I don't see anything that looks like a problem from yesterday when Photoshop crashed.

Can you take a look to the Taskmanager during Photoshop freezes? If yes, check the activation of the Photoshop process.

Check also the Windows logs if there's a hint to the issue.

One problem fixed. The other problem is still there.  Photoshop is open.  The PC goes to sleep for some time.  I double click an image which will open in Photoshop. It doesn't matter what size image or what kind of image.  Photoshop begins to open, then freezes.  The whole PC freezes.  It stays frozen for awhile, then Photoshop closes and the PC is OK.  I try again to open Photoshop and it opens with no problem.  It only happens after Photoshop, or the PC has been sleeping or idle for maybe some hours.  I'm not sure how long the PC has to be idol or asleep.  That problem has been happening for years.  I believe if I could revert back to version 24 or 25 this problem would not exist.  It started with one of the Photoshop updates.

Right.  Looking more closely at it, it looks like some of the patterns I use are also using ram.  I loaded them one by one and I could see the ram usage creep up from 43% to 67%.  So the problem was as you say, something getting corrupted in the settings, but also I need to keep an eye on 3rd party addons.

Thanks for reporting back. This confirms what we've seen before: this problem is fixed with a complete reset of all settings/preferences. The most complete method is to move the whole Settings folder to the desktop so a new one can be built.

It isn't actually Photoshop using all this memory, it's the GPU - but performing tasks called by Photoshop. Sometimes it can start eating up the whole system pagefile when memory runs out, which brings down the whole system. There is apparently a vulnerability here which corrupts something in the settings. The settings folder contains the whole application configuration, not just your own user settings.

I realized that the Control Alt Shift method of resetting the prefs wasn't actually working.  It popped up a window that says reset prefs, but it did not.  I tried the 2nd method of resetting prefs and that one worked.  After resetting the prefs the problem of freezing during opening went away.  System ram usage is only showing 43% so the ram issue was a real problem, but something in Photoshop's settings was causing Photoshop to grab all of available ram.  After properly resetting the prefs, Photoshop also launches in just a few seconds.  So I think this problem is solved.  But I'll have to see if the other problem persists. The one where if I leave Photoshop running, the sleep the PC for some hours, Photoshop freezes when I try to open any file.

Those solutions don't resolve the problem.  From what I can tell this is definitely a problem of Photoshop using up to 100% of available system ram just to launch the program.  My computer is using 36% of available ram at idol with no programs running.  When Photoshop launches, it jumps to 97%.  If I have some other programs open it can jump to 100%.  If it's maxing out available ram, then I would be surprised if it didn't have some kind of failure during launch.  The default setting in Photoshop allows Photoshop to use 70% of available ram.  Photoshop grabs all of that as it launches and that maxes out the ram and freezes.  I reduced the setting from 70% to 20%.  Photoshop launches and the physical memory in use goes to 58% instead of 97% or 100%.

All of this became a problem with one of the most recent Photoshop updates.  I'm guessing Adobe is increasing the ram requirements with each new version of Photoshop and now 32gb is barely enough to run Photoshop at it's default settings.

If this doesn't help check your system if it's up-to-date. Do you have installed all recent updates and patches for the operating system and the device drivers, especially the graphic driver. If you have a NVidia graphic card installed, make sure that you are using the recent Studio version of the driver, not the Game Ready version.

Please also provide a copy of your 'System Info'. This can be get from the Photoshop menu item Help > System Info. There's a copy button in the System Info dialog. Press this button and paste the info into your next forum post.
