Premiere Pro 25.1 playback Issues/stops randomly

Hi everyone,

I am having some issues with the new version of Premiere Pro (v25.1).

The playback in a project stops randomly after a few seconds or minutes. When this happens, I can't play anything. I can still navigate through the software, move the timeline cursor or edit the clips but I can't my sequence or preview any files inside my project. The preview and program windows are freezed. When I restart premiere pro it works again for a few seconds or minutes until this happens again.

I am working on a Macbook Pro (macOS: Sonoma 14.6.1. ) with a M3 Max chip and 48GB of RAM.

I am already working on this project for several days and today (since the update) is the first time experiencing this issue. I am working with MXF (XDCAM422) files.

Is anyone experience similar issues and has some ideas on how to solve this?

Thank you!

I checked all the files I was using in my sequence (and deleted them one by one), and I realized that I had also been using an .m4a file. It was a voice-over layout recording I had done on my phone. After removing it from my sequence, the issue seems to be resolved—no problems in the last 10 minutes, whereas the issue would usually occur within seconds. I'll keep you posted.

Seems as if the m4a. files was causing the issues. No problems since I have removed this file from my sequence.

Thanks for your help @Kevin-Monahan !

I am also using mov. files (Prores422 and Prores4444 with alpha) I have exported from AE and I have an editable graphic that I imported to premiere pro via essential graphics. Furthermore I am working with wav files. I think that's it.

Yes, this also happens, when I copy my timeline into a new sequence.

I also sampled three processes: The first one is while Premiere is still working, the second and third while hanging.

You can find the samples here: Adobe Sample Processes

@Kevin-Monahan  is this specific to M3 models?

Hey @Christian.Z,

I'm not sure. I have an M1. There is an issue on the Beta forum that is similar to this one. See if this potential workaround might help: https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-beta-bugs/p-spacebar-does-not-start-playing-the-timeline/idc-p/15030953#M4801.

Thanks,
Kevin

@Enchanted_strategist4308,.

As a follow-up, are you using any other media in the Timeline? I have some .jpg files I converted in Photoshop, stock music from the Essential Sound panel, and H.264 files (4K, 24P. 8-bit, 4:2:0) from an iPhone XS Max. What files other than the .mxf files are you using? Anything? Do you have effects, graphics, or captions in the Timeline? What happens if you copy/paste the existing sequence into a new sequence? Does that help?

When you start hanging like that, if you have a moment, see if you can sample a process. See this article: How to pull Premiere Pro process samples (Mac)

I will do the same. You can post the sample here or send a private message with a URL to where I can grab it and give it to engineers.

If you do not have time for running tests, we do understand. Sorry again for the frustration.

Thanks Again,

Kevin

Hello @Enchanted_strategist4308,

Welcome to the forum. The community and the Premiere Pro team appreciate your contribution and time spent filing the issue. I am Kevin, from Adobe Support, a moderator here.

I've seen one or two others with a similar issue (me too!). I will keep a close eye on it, and hopefully, we can find a way to reproduce the problem.

I hope an engineer can help us debug this nasty problem shortly. It's on the radar, for sure. Sorry for the issue.

Cheers,
Kevin
