Premiere Pro Playback Glitching and Lag

Hi. I hope you can help. 
I'm using a 2017 iMac and have just upgraded the RAM to 40GB to see if it makes any difference to the performance but sadly it hasn't. 
When I add simple effects to videos in premiere pro, my video play back is super slow and glitchy. I have all the files on an external SSD and have a clean work flow. I don't want to create proxies. 
ive tried a bunch of stuff and it seems to be the same. 
my export times are long too. 
Ive also heard that premiere isn't optimised for Apple products like Final Pro is (sorry adobe) I love premiere and don't want to switch but my work flow is being slowed down heavily by this and it's becoming a chore to edit. 
has anybody else experienced this?

Thanks for reaching out. I see that you are having playback related issue in Premiere Pro.

Would you mind sharing your system specifications (OS version, CPU, GPU) and details of the media you are working with (frame rate, frame size, format/codec)? Also, are you using any third-party plug-in for Premiere Pro?
