Question

Sometimes cannot create more than one marker

I'm running into an odd, intermittent, serious problem. I sometimes can't add more than one marker.

I can always create one marker just fine, regardless of whether there are already markers, but after that, nothing happens when I do the usual methods: pressing M, clicking the menu Markers > Add Marker, or right-clicking the timeline and clicking Add Marker. Those menu commands are not grayed out. No additional markers appear anywhere: the timeline of the Program Monitor or the Sequence panel (perhaps not the right name), nor the Markers panel. Nothing is added to the History panel either.

My focus is on adding sequence markers while the Program Monitor is active, but this problem also applies to clip markers. After I spent my one sequence marker and could add no more, I was able to create one marker on a clip, but only one.

Once it happens, this problem is persistent, at least for a given sequence or clip, during a Premiere session. Restarting Premiere sometimes cures this for a time, but sometimes it only earns me one new marker before I'm again seemingly out of markers.

This occurs with the latest Premiere 2024 (24.6.3 build 4) on both computers that I've tried, one running macOS 14.7.1, the other running Windows 10 19045.5131.

I'm using a Team Project, which is necessary for this project and new for my team. When I try unsuccessfully to add a marker to a sequence, the sequence's status does not change from "up to date" to "editing" as it should, which makes sense considering that Premiere didn't register my edit. I can make other edits to the sequence, such as trimming a clip; then the status does change to "editing." Perhaps relatedly, I've run into some sync issues that I don't understand. When on the Windows machine I tried to publish a change, Premiere showed the error dialog, "A newer version of the Team Project has been published. Please get the latest changes and resolve any conflicts before trying to publish again." But in the Edit > Team Project menu, both Update and Resolve Conflicts were grayed out. The only way I could get out of this situation was by restarting Premiere. Then everything worked: the Update button was available, I published without trouble, and I was able to make lots of markers.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Wallace

Hi @Rach McIntire,

Thanks for your reply. In my original post I will add info according to that template (I haven't yet). I don't fully understand that other bug report, but it seems different. I did search this forum and generally, and I didn't find anything quite like what I'm experiencing.

How can I share a Team Project for Adobe staff and others to attempt to reproduce this? I haven't experienced this problem outside of a Team Project. I tried just now, and the traditional Project (local .prproj) worked fine. I suppose I could convert the Team Project to a Project for Adobe staff to convert into their own Team Project, though that would leave more variables uncontrolled.

Thanks,

Wallace

@wallacewhite  Did you ever figure this out? @Rach McIntire, any insights?

This just happened to me in my Teams Project. Adding markers was working fine for a few hours, but at a certain point prompted by nothing in particular, I became unable to add markers to clips and sequences. When I restart Premiere, I can add exactly 1 marker to either a media clip or a sequence, and then I lose the ability to add markers again.

"Write clip markers to XMP" is turned off.

I've tried adding markers via:

  • Marker Menu
  • Timeline Panel
  • Source Panel
  • Program Monitor
  • Changing my keyboard shortcut
  • Changing keyboard shortcut to specific marker color

This only happens in Teams projects, but it's a frustrating bug as markers are pretty essential when working collaboratively.

Hi @circavia,

Sorry to hear that you've run into this too. I have not had this problem since I wrote about it. I didn't change versions of Premiere or anything, and my team of four editors used markers extensively without problem—until we ran into a different problem, which I recently posted about, and stopped using Team Projects, at least for now.

Good luck to you. I understand your frustration.

Hi @wallacewhite ,

Welcome to the Premiere Pro forums!  We’re happy you’ve reached out.  We’ll need a bit more info to try and help with your issue.

Please see; How do I write a bug report?

This sounds similar, but not quite the same as this issue: Timeline Markers.  Although since your dealing with a Team project it may not be the same.

I hope we can help you soon.

Thanks,
Rach
