Subclip Broken Previews (Project Panel and Source Monitor)

I can't seem to find a way around this. I tried everything.

 

I have multiple subclips for the same master (source) footage.

Everything seems fine, I get proper previews (thumbnails) for the right In/Out points for each clip, both in the Project Panel and Source Monitor.

 

The problem starts when I move the original master footage of the subclips to a different folder (or even rename it), then I'll relink media (or replace footage) and all the subclips' previews will get broken, the In/Out points of the subclips will be at the beginning and then black video for the rest of the master clip.

The duration of each subclip also gets changed to the master footage total duration, instead of the subclip's duration (as it was before relinking media).

 

Can anyone replicate this issue or know how to solve this?

A bit of understanding of how projects and sequences are 'created' in the app is necessary to understanding how and why things work the way they do.

 

Projects are actually simply a form of a database file, that's all. Included in that are references to assets like files on disc, and of course, additional databases for each sequence.

 

You are breaking that organizational pattern. Therefore, you're getting the behavior you're getting.

 

If you were working in a Productions mode, then you could do more organization stuff like this without breaking the project "memory". I'm a one-man shop, but use Productions precisely for that reason.

 

I have folders for types of work, folders within those for clients/jobs/personal projects, and folders with projects holding b-roll, audio libraries, template sequences and such. And I can grab anything from another projet and use it in a current one without either duplicates or 'losing' links.

Awesome!! I had no clue about this feature and I took the time to read all of the references you linked. Now I already started sketching my own production(s) design. You saved my day (and probably more future inefficient days), Neil ! so I really thank you for replying so quickly.

 

BTW i still think the behavior I mentioned is faulty and that Adobe should fix it. Previews of subclips shouldn't get broken if I relink the footage, that's just purely destructive and makes no sense for any kind of user. As well as the faulty Project Manager behavior of duplicating subclips' original master footage over and over for every single subclip, when Collecting Files. It's just wrong and inefficient (this what caused me needing to replace the footage in the first place).

    The way that files are references within Premiere's standard project files ... I'm not sure how the relinking could work without duplicating the full data of the original file setup.

     

    For the Project manager ... that has so many ifs/ands/buts/gotchas! that I don't actually use it much. Yea ... it's got some pain points. Especially in that many features only work like you expect with intraframe codecs, ProRes, Cineform, and DNx. But don't work as expected for 'triming' with long-GOP interframe codecs in H.264/5.
