How to Save an InDesign File for Older Versions (IDML) Did you know? InDesign files aren't backward compatible by default - a .indd file saved in InDesign 2024 simply won't open in InDesign CC 2019. But there's a simple workaround: export as IDML. What is IDML?IDML (InDesign Markup Language) is an open, XML-based file format that acts as a universal bridge between InDesign versions. Any version of InDesign from CS4 onwards can open an IDML file - making it the go-to format when collaborating with colleagues or clients on older software. But backward compatibility is only half the story. IDML is also one of the most reliable ways to recover a corrupted InDesign file. Because IDML is XML-based rather than binary, exporting a damaged .indd to IDML and then reopening it often strips out the corruption that's causing crashes, freezes, or "cannot be opened" errors - even when other recovery methods fail. Many InDesign users keep this trick in their back pocket specifically for emergencies, no
InDesign AI Assistant just launched in public beta and we are excited for you to try it. What is AI Assistant in InDesign? It's your conversational partner built directly within InDesign. It can help you build skills and create production-ready InDesign documents faster. Instead of digging through tutorials, simply ask the AI Assistant "How do I create a table of contents?" and learn as you go. Or save time by having it set up your layout and apply bulk text/image/style edits with a single prompt. Why it mattersDesigners spend a huge amount of time on repetitive tasks and navigating menus, and when you get stuck, context-switching to YouTube or Help pages breaks your flow. AI Assistant changes that: Speed up your workflow: Automate multi-step workflows with natural language prompts. Guidance on demand: Get instant, in-context answers without leaving the app. Stay in your creative flow: Fewer interruptions, more designing. How to try itOpen the Creative Cloud desktop app and go to A

It has been working with no problems for years but now I am unable to open. If double clicking a file to launch, it will get as far as displaying the file but then freezes. If launching InDesign from the task bar, it will open the standard UI display but then will freeze. The pre-flight shows "checking" and I can hear the PC working on something in the background, but nothing within InDesign works and I have to end task using Task Manager.I have uninstalled/installed numerous times but still having the same issue. I have also gone through the delete preferences process.
I have downgrade to 20.4.2. from 20.5 and I have lost all my new scripts!!! (Mac OS 15.7.4)Where are they???? Any help? They are not at Users/User/Library/Preferences/Adobe Indesign/
I have just updated to the 2023 InDesign, and now suddently my documents are read-only and I cannot save the file, but have to make a save as version and give the document a new name everytime I have to save my work.Do you know why this is happening? And how to avoid this?
Hello. In the sublayer of the program which I use in English, appears in German. Regardless of the right user region all programs were in English including Windows11. It concerns the following path: Type/Text variables/Insert variable/…The translations for other functions appear in the right language.I use the edition 20.5.3.x64.Is it a translation bug?
I'm experiencing a reproducible issue with Adobe InDesign 21.4.1 on Windows 11.Environment:- Windows 11- Adobe InDesign 21.4.1- Single monitorIssue:If InDesign is closed while the Pages panel is the active panel, opening any .indd file by double-clicking it in Windows Explorer causes InDesign to freeze during startup. The loading cursor continues indefinitely and the document never opens. However, if I launch InDesign first and then use File > Open, the same document opens normally. What I tested:- The issue also occurs with a brand new test.indd file.- It is not related to a specific document.- Resetting InDesign preferences temporarily fixes the issue.- Other panels (Layers, Links, Transform, etc.) can be moved or docked without causing the problem.- If I close InDesign with the Properties panel active instead of the Pages panel, double-click opening works normally.- Simply displaying the Pages panel before closing InDesign causes the issue to return, even without saving the workspac
In the latest update of InDesign when I have multiple shapes and frames on the page selected, if my cursor is above something like a rectangle with content/picture inside it, I only move the picture that is below it at the time. Rather than the whole selection of objects as it used to. I tested before and after the update and it was something that only broke with 21.4. If I cursor over a solid shape object while still selecting the entire group (including the photo frame) that then moves the entire section but only if cursor above a placed fill object does it break. What could possibly be happening?
Hi everyone.Is there no corresponding code for the Reset to Base option?There is no information in the script manual, and only I have asked about the relevant content in the forum.For example, the basic style is A, but after running, B is not completely based on AOriginally, @m1b wrote a function, but now I have found that the outer major items have been selected(inherited), but the internal values have not been inherited.Pay attention to the changes in the style of object B, which was originally based on "TrueNone".In fact, every time based on it, it needs to be reset to the bese. But the relevant code is missing for some unknown reason.var A = app.documents[0].objectStyles.itemByName('A');var B = app.documents[0].objectStyles.itemByName('B');B.basedOn = A;resetObjectStyle(B);function resetObjectStyle(style) { var baseStyle = style.basedOn; var oldName = style.name; if (!baseStyle.isValid) { return alert('Object style cannot be reset due to missing base style.');
Hello,I am using InDesign on Windows (latest version, 21.0) for the first time, and the app remains stuck indefinitely on the startup screen at the "Starting Panels" stage, never reaching the interface. I have let it run for up to 10 minutes with no result. In Task Manager, the InDesign.exe process consumes around 47% CPU across 25 active threads throughout the hang, so it does not appear to be frozen but rather stuck in a process that never completes.I also installed and tested an earlier version (20.0) from Creative Cloud, and the exact same issue occurs there as well, so this does not appear to be version specific. Here is everything I have already tried without success:- Resetting preferences (Ctrl+Alt+Shift at launch)- Fully deleting the InDesign Preferences and Cache folders (AppData Roaming and Local)- Deleting the Recovery folder- Deleting the AdobeFnt*.lst font cache files in the Caches folder- Temporarily disabling antivirus (Avast, file shield)- Adding an antivirus exception f
I uncheck "Open in Full Screen Mode" when exporting an interactive PDF, but Acrobat (and Reader) continue to tell me my PDF is trying to open in full screen. This document is for non-tech savvy people who are going to have trouble with extra clicks or changing Acrobat settings. What am I missing here?
I installed Adobe 2026 on my imac. Now undo doesn’t work. It’s permanently grayed out. ID 21.2 on a Retina 5K running Ventura 13.7.8. If you look at screen shot, I can’t undo the neon effect I made or undo the letter ‘M’ I deleted. I’m opening 2025 ID to see if that helps.
We use File > Place… to add text (.docx) to InDesign documents.Words in the .docx file are missing in the StoryEditor version and the InDesign file (see screenshot). What tool in InDesign can be used to link/import unformatted word documents without altering the original?
Buongiorno.Voglio modificare un testo con In Design, ma quando clicco sulla parola da correggere non succede nulla. Che cosa devo fare?
Refer to attached screenshots.Screenshot 01: the numbering of Header, Sub-header, and Sub-sub-header is fine on this page.Screenshot 02: however, on the next page (and onward) all of the sub-sub-header numbers stay stuck at 3.2.1.Screenshot 03: shows settings fro the numbers at Level 3.I cannot figure out what Level 1 and 2 work but Level 3 does not.
Hello, I am having an issue with InDesign. When I import text into a file, apply paragraph and character styles, and then copy and paste the text into another file with the same imported styles, the text loses its font and becomes Minion Pro. Does anyone know why this happens?I use windows 11 and the indd is 20.5.2Thanks! V
Screenshot attached. The text is threading into a small point in the middle of the page instead of the full text box. Anyone have any clue why this is happening or how to fix it? Thanks in advance!
ID 21.4.1, MacI built a file in InDesign without issues. We just started experiencing an issue in which when someone else opens the file, the fonts (Barlow) appear to be missing, and show up like this: I was able to get the fonts working by disabling them, and letting ID re-enable them. However, when I opened a different copy of the same file, Medium and Medium appeared to be missing again, though I found I could also “fix” them by using Type > Find/Replace. I assume that if I open up a copy someone else was working on, I may experience the same issue.Any ideas what may cause this? It’s concerning, and we haven’t seen this before. Thanks
When I select the text to create a new destination, it doesn’t show anything but the previous text in the name box in the pop-up, but the selected text does show up on the Hyperlink panel after I press OK. However, it doesn’t show up (and therefore I can’t select it) on the Cross-Reference drop-down when I try to add the cross-reference.
I frequently create brochures, and at some point in the project without fail the share for review link stops allowing me to update content. The review links are an integral part of our workflow, and for my non-brochure work they are fine (although I have to update those less frequently), but with my brochure documents it will allow me to create a new link, but after that I can no longer publish any changes. I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling InDesign, turned off and on countless times, ensured the document I’m updating is the only one open, packaged then opened the idml and re-saved the document to indd. It just doesn’t work, and it’s really frustrating to explain to our clients that their comments have gone because we had to make a new link (or they get confused, comment on an old link and we don’t make the updates). Any ideas?
I am using the latest version of Indesign 21.4.I have created a graphic frame and have linked an SVG graphic within it.Normally, double clicking allows me to resize the content (brown grabbers show)This is no longer working properly and it’s driving me nuts because I work with a lot of SVG logos.I’ve tried rolling back to older version 21.3 and it did not fix.I tried resetting preferences and it did not fix. What gives? I need to be able to do this for my job.
I installed the latest update to version 21, and InDesign won't launch. It doesn't give any errors, but it won't start. It doesn't do anything at all. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it, but that didn't work. Version 20 works perfectly, even the beta version 20.6. I tried reinstalling it by deleting the preferences, but that didn't work. I tried reinstalling the Creative app and reinstalling InDesign, but that didn't work.Bridge does the same thing, but it gives me error OXC0000142. InDesign, on the other hand, doesn't have any errors. Old Bridge works, but the beta version doesn't I have windows 11 last updatedWhat can I do?Thanks a lotNicola
