Adobe out of Memory Error when loading PDF's

New installation of Adobe Acrobat Pro DC Version 2019.012.20040.  When opening a PDF, at times I will get an "Out of Memory" error.  When opening a PDF with multiple pages, when I start to scroll those pages it works for the first few...but then it will lock up, pause and jump and scrolling does not work at all.  I have done a repair installation, but that did not help at all.  I have an old laptop (this new laptop replaced that) with the same version of Adobe and do not have these issues.  Please HELP!

Most of the “out of memory” issues occur on Windows when opening exceptionally-complex PDF files, primarily those coming out of CAD programs in which a single page may have literally hundreds of thousands of individual line segments defined, often with a line width of 0 (legal, but highly discouraged practice) and sometimes with unnecessary use of transparency which requires transparency blending for page display and most printing.

 

Typically, with current versions of Acrobat (i.e. 2017, 2020, and DC), this problem is almost always seen under Windows. Why? Currently, Acrobat (and Reader) under Windows is still 32-bit and is limited to a 3GB address space, regardless of how much physical memory you have installed on your system.

 

Expect an update for Acrobat to provide a 64-bit version in a not-too distant release. That should solve this issue assuming you are running a 64-bit version of Windows 10.

Why am I getting an Acrobat 'Out of Memory' error?

My laptop has 32GB of memory.  I have six pdf files open, total size less than 30MB.  How can Acorbat possibly be out of memory???

I can only assume the Acrobat software is badly written if it uses up 32GB of memory to read a files that are 30MB (one thousand times smaller than memory)

It also comes up with 'Draw Error'

What version of Acrobat is it exactly (not "latest" please?)

Does it say (in the title bar or ABOUT box whether it is 64-bit or 32-bit)?

How much free space on your system disk?

Hello! I am running into the same "Out of Memory" issue I have seen a lot of posts about with not much help for a resolution. It started with an admittedly large file that was difficult to process, but after restarting my computer and acrobat multiple times the problem is now happening to everything I work on. The problem mainly happens when I "organize pages" and look at everything all at once, but we have to do so to move pages around and match things up front to back for printing and get things in the right order.


Our work is with printing and we use Acrobat to get our PDFs print ready and set up to our templates so we need to get this resolved ASAP. 

 

I am also not sure if this is relevant but we just updated our windows to the latest version last night and now I am running into these issues today so maybe that has something to do with it?

 

It has happened to us in the past but never persisted this long so any tips would be very much appreciated.

I have explained this behavior in my post.

 

With a 17MB file, Adobe balloons to nearly a 1GB of RAM from the 300MB used to open it when clicking on "Organize Pages".  The real issue sets in when trying to extract the documents for my users.  The "Delete Pages After Extracting" checkbox would cause memory to double with each extraction.  The "fix" until Adobe does something better is to simply not use that checkbox.  Adobe doesn't clear out the cached memory until you close the application, FYI.

 

Other posts have made reference to viewing the tiles of a PDF leads to memory consumption.  One thing that you can try to do is with your open document go File > Reduce File Size and resave it.  That has "helped" but isn't a cure all.  You could also try to break your document into more manageable sections then combine the files once you have your layout done.

Since upgrading to Acrobat DC (21.007.20091) we are seeing a lot of "out of memory" errors, especially when "page thumbnails" is enabled and users are scrolling around in that view in larger PDFs (150+ mb). These machines have 16 gigs of ram, plenty of drive space availible, and are running Windows 10. Thumbnails stop loading altogether once this "out of memory" pops up.

It appears that this issue has been around a long time.  I have been experiencing it for the last week and it is very annoying as I use Adobe most of the day.  Can this be excalated to a priority in developing the fix?

I think with all the comments by the user community it appears that this particular issue with the "Out of Memory" is quite apparent and still valid.  I also, have several users here at my company experiencing the same problem.  There is no real way for us to replicate the problem but it is still an ongoing issue.  

Per Dov Issac's Isaacs' stated the following, "Expect an update for Acrobat to provide a 64-bit version in a not-too distant release. That should solve this issue assuming you are running a 64-bit version of Windows 10.".   Do we have an ETA on when this will get officially released?  I have reviewed many articles on this particular issue dating back from 2011 and one of the users speculates that there is definitely an issue with the coding with Adobe Acrobat products.  Lastly, why do you only offer a 32bit version when there are so many limitations with that particular architecture?  Anyhow, can you get an ETA on when this new 64bit version will be released?  Thx

Adobe doesn't generally preannounce releases. That having been said, my previous posting stands, but by the time Spring arrives, your wish may be granted. 🙂

I am having this same issue.  128 BG RAM, i9 processor windows 10.  Yes this happens often with our files exported from autocad and civil 3d.  Makes Acrobat useless to us.  Any progress on solving this issue?  I'm happy to share files that have this error...  it's most of our large pdf from CAD.

My PhD research requires me to continuously have several PDF's open, each one often several hundred pages long. However, I am constantly having annoying 'Out of memory' pop-ups, making me having to re-open everything and deeply disturbing my workflow.

 

This is highly peculiar, considering my modern PC can load much more demanding programmes without any issues, and I have the latest version of Adobe Pro. It is clearly a software issue. If there is no simple and easy solution to this problem, which repeated Google searches have shown to be chronic for months and even years among many users, I will be forced to cancel my subscription and look for better programmed alternatives elsewhere, that can do their job: simply showing the text of PDF's without crashing several times an hour (sometimes every ten minutes!).

 

One can also ask why something as simple as a PDF-reader needs a costly subscription service, but I guess asking the question is already answering it.

You can use Acrobat Reader DC. It is free.

I had experienced the same issues with the free version. A few weeks ago I got a subscription, as I also need to make some edits from time to time, convert JPG's from scanned documents, and perform OCR, though the memory issues occur when simply having even two PDF's open, which are not excessively large, but do each have about 300 pages in them.

We are experiencingOut of Memory issues in Adobe Acrobat Pro DC.

Sometimes its when we have just multiple PDFS open.  Sometimes when we go to Print PDFs.

I have users with 32GIGS of RAM and I have users with 8 GIGS of RAM.  Issue remains.

Users TaskManger doesnt show capped out Memory.  

Sometimes we have out of virtual memory, sometimes we just get generic memory issues.  

Restarting the PC everytime isnt an acceptble response, because ends users workflow is dramatically impacted.

 

Verified latest version.

Would apprciate an update.  Reviewed the latest bug line, Havent found anything from Adobe regarding this.  Its company wide, so we have narrowed it down to strictly adobe issues with multiple PDFS open.

Unfortunately, Acrobat (for Windows) is still a 32-bits application which means it can only use up to 2GB of memory. So whether you have 4, 10 or 32GB of RAM is immaterial, until Adobe gets its act together and ports the application to the 21st century.

Actually, the virtual address space that Acrobat on Windows can use is 3+ gigabytes, not 2 gigabytes. Typically, this address space limitation occurs with multiple very large PDF files open and with attempts to print exceptionally complex (i.e., a very large number of individual graphic objects with live transparency on a page) pages.

 

Adobe doesn't pre-announce releases, but I think you can assume that an x64 version for Windows will be forthcoming (hopefully before the pandemic is over)!  😉

This does not work!  Tried every solution.

On a 37Mb complex CAD drawing 74 page PDF, Acrobat Pro V 2019.021.20061 sill fails to open quickly and I still expeience 'Out of Memory' and 'A drawing error occured' errors.

THis happens on Adobe Reader as well and on different PC's.

Please address this issue!

All,

 

I have a PC with an i9 processor and 64gb of RAM and still get this error. And my system shows that Adobe is only using just over 3gb or memory. For the rediculous subscription fees we're paying these days you'd think we'd get a premium product.

 

From memory Acrobat is only 32bit, this would explain the 3gb showing on my sytem as 32bit programs can only address 4gb at a time. Funny thing is that it's a 64bit package on MacOS.

 

How about Adobe uses all the money they bring in from subscriptions to do some upgrades. I don't think any windows PC available today runs a 32bit OS, why restrict productivity software to a limit that existed so many years ago!

Hey there!

 

Thanks for sharing the information. 

Looking at the description given above, I believe you are experiencing trouble with both multiple and single page document? 

Try the solution provided in the similar discussion here: https://community.adobe.com/t5/Acrobat/quot-Out-of-Memory-error-quot-Acrobat-Pro-DC/td-p/9729228 and if this doesn't help.

Then, 

Navigate to Acrobat>Edit>Preferences>Security (Enhanced)>disable "Protected View" and "Enhanced Security">OK>Reboot Acrobat. 


Note: Changing the above security settings could pose security risks. We suggest you to turn it back On once you are done with testing.

When are you people going to listen to the people on this forum and fix the bugs in your products?!.

I am having the same problem that the other people here are having, even after following your useless instructions.  And I have been having this problem with many differnt document over the past 6 months...

I suspect you have boated your software everytime you have undertaken an upgrade.  And if that's the case, which I believe it is your IT Project Managers and your beta testers are junk.

 

Why should everyone here have to uninstall/reinstall your products to "fix" your problems.

Acrobe DC is not worth the money I am paying for it.


I have wasted a day today attempting comment a 1200 page document as part of a documention review for one of my clients, and if I was using Acrobat 9 would have had none problems...

Is adobe going to pay for the day of lost time I cannot  claim from my client, I seriously doubt it...Every time you release an"up" (more like down) grade to Acrobat DC it's performance worsens.

 

This problem is occuring on three different PCs that I use.

 

The thread indicated that the issue is solved...  It it?...  You have provided no Response to Deano_82 below which demonstrates to me that there is no real commitment from Adobe regarding the issues raised here.
Don't waste my and everyone elses time here with a response from first level support, get a developer to respond...

Hello Sonnys,

We apologize for the inconvenience caused, as per the description above, you are getting "out of memory" error in Acrobat Pro DC, Is that correct?

Please reboot the machine once after closing Acrobat and see if this brings any difference.

Check for any pending updates of Acrobat from Help>Check for updates. Reboot the machine after the installation of updates.

Try repairing the installation files in Acrobat from Help>repair installation.

If the issue persists, please use Acrobat cleaner tool to remove Acrobat Download Adobe Reader and Acrobat Cleaner Tool - Adobe Labs

Reboot the machine and install Acrobat back from Download Pro or Standard versions of Acrobat DC, 2017, XI, or X

Let us know how it goes and share your findings.

I have a very similar issue. One paged files open no problem but multipage documents crap out with the out of memory error.

I will try some of theese steps and see what happens. The restart one is allready checked wih a no difference result, but some of the others are worth a try.
