Adobe Reader quit unexpectedly

I kept getting this problem with my Adobe Acrobat reader.  I tried to repair and even reinstall but it keeps coming up. Not sure if it has anything to do with recent Windows updates. I am using Windows 10 64bit.

Help!

Thank you Amal, The AcrobatDCx64Upd2300820555.msp update seems to have fixed the issue.

That didn't last long: got 8 errors in 5 minutes.

Turning bDisableSuggestWorkaroundsAtLaunch back ON.

Menu > Preferences > Security (Enhanced), disable "Enable Protected Mode at startup" seems to have fixed it for me. NO issues for week or so. ... (but didn't seem to solve it for a co-worker)

This is outrageous. This is affecting many users, the problem has been reproduced several times by many. I have this problem myself on my desktop (Win 10 64bits), on my laptop (Win 11 64bits), in all cases with all software updates. It doesn't matter if there is an antivirus (Avast) or not, it doesn't matter if there are other pieces of software installed. It seems to be a problem exclusive to Acrobat. Please fix it!

no.  these are user-to-user forums.  and this thread is confounded by posts from people with different problems, different causes and even users with acrobat, not reader.

Acrobat Reader is a free product but we have a subscription.

Yesterday, I did call Adobe Support at 1-800-685-3570.
They suggest installing the 32-bit version.
Also, we got case number ADB-3167-1747-****.
I'll reply with the results.

you have a subscription to what?

I suggest not related to the reason for the bug (Quick print from Outlook 2016).
We have 15 workstations with Acrobat Reader.
On one of them, we have a problem with quick print after September Acrobat Reader updates.

We have subscriptions for Adobe Acrobat Pro, Photoshop, and Illustrator.

For those that do not want to edit the registry, but would like a reliable solution...
Go into the Acrobat/Reader settings and disable the PDF thumbnails.
Go to the Microsoft store app, download and install Microsoft PowerToys - https://apps.microsoft.com/store/detail/XP89DCGQ3K6VLD?ocid=pdpshare
After installing, open the PowerToys settings (double click the taskbar icon), navigate to "File Explorer add-ons" and check the 2 options for Portable Document Format. One option is for the Preview Pane and the other is for Thumbnails icons.
This option will conflict with Adobe's built in thumbnail option, so only use this with Adobe's setting disabled.
One limitation I've seen with PowerToys is that I use Outlook and the PDF attachment preview does not work without the Adobe option. For me, this isn't an issue because I can still double click the attachment and open it regularly.

I hope this helps all my fellow frustrated Acrobat/Reader users!

Other topic, same issue : https://community.adobe.com/t5/acrobat-discussions/annoying-pop-up-quit-error-message-when-opening-files/m-p/14099274

I saw that earlier today and I am currently in the process of testing it (the modified version of Solution #3). So far no error message has not popped up.

If that solution works, it will be a viable fix for the problem. Since you are simply turning off a setting and after a restart you are turning it back on, no change in the program's function took place. Something like this can fix a registry value's data.

After about 8 hours with latest solution, I'll go on a limb and say that IT IS WORKING!

The solution can be found in Solved: Re: Annoying pop-up quit error message when openin... - Adobe Community - 14099260, posted by @jaynixx:

I used a modified version of solution #3 from https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-dc-crashes-on-windows-os.html - my preferences already had protected view turned off so I disabled Protected Mode at startup, quit the program & restarted then enabled the mode again (while leaving Protected View turned Off) and restarted once more. I haven't had the pop-up message again since then.

I just want to add here that if you used the 'bDisableSuggestWorkaroundsAtLaunch' value in the registry, either delete it or set it's data to 0 (zero).

It seems like toggling the "Enable Protected Mode at startup" OFF and back ON could fix an Adobe setting which might have gotten corrupted somehow.

I have more than 8 hours of running without that pesky error popup.

Thanks @jaynixx !

My educated guess is that there is no crash. This sounds like a bug in the program which pops the error message. I have not seen any signs of impairment after the message pops up even several times. Adobe Reader DC does not quit. Normally, if a module used by a program crashes, you would see some loss of functionality, at least temporary. That doesn't seem to be the case here.

The 'bDisableSuggestWorkaroundsAtLaunch' registry value is just a mask to prevent the popup message from displaying. Actually it may hide this message from view in legitimate instances, so I do not consider it as a solution. It is rather a "band-aid", which I use for now instead of turning off the thumbnail previews in Windows Explorer. After an Adobe update it, is easy to set this registry value to 0 and check if the "annoyance" still exists. If so, I'll set it back to 1 and wait again.

So true. I'm exactly sharing this position. 👍

This is a continuing error.  And if it were just one computer, we'd say, "Our fault".  It is not.  In a system with 10s of Adobe installations, and I have not checked them all, let us say "MANY" folks have this problem.  Please do not provide a solution that involves turning of features that previously worked, that involve uninstalling on every computer, or otherwise assume user error.

Adobe, oneyour mandatory, install-me-now-or-else-the-world-ends-and-reboot-immediately updates (to which security IT says, "YES, YOU HAVE TOO!"  created the problem.  Please figure it our and correct.  Thank you.

I concur with your statement. When you pay for a product you should have a product that works. In my case I get this message everytime I open a pdf document. It opens it but also create the message which is not quite true in it's wording as it hasn't quit.

I am getting the same issue. Woindows 11, 64 bit.
Acrobat just seems so clunky.

As well as getting the 'quit unexpectedly' pop up, it also freezes for about 10 seconds after launcing and opening a pdf . Every time.

Adobe was not only throwing tons of error messages but also making my laptop freeze from time to time. Horrible situation!!

So, I just removed Acrobat from the default program for PDF for the time being!! And it's all peaceful now!! Until Adobe publishes a concrete solution, I will continue not using Adobe for PDF. Thanks.
