unable to print PDF's from the terminal server

New Here ,
Mar 10, 2016 Mar 10, 2016

Hi Guys,

We have a terminal server that is only being used by two users for the next couple weeks however both of them are having issues usually not at the same time but has happened where they are not being able to print PDF's but are able to print word docs etc.

When this happens the green tick on the default printer has also disappeared but when right clicking on that printer we are able to tell it is set to the default.

We have tried updating the drivers, uninstalling Adobe Reader and reinstalling, restarting print spooler and a few other things but the only resolution is actually restarting the server which cannot be done every time and I need to resolve this before everyone migrates from the old server.

I am not sure how to proceed and would love some help, is this a Server issue or Adobe Reader issue?

Hi There

We're having the same problems, someone at Adobe who can answer this??? We have the problem at multible customers running terminal server 2012R2, so it seems to be common problem.

I might add that we push the printers from a print server (also 2012R2) via GPO. Everything else works with printers, Microsoft Navision C5, Office 2016, notepad. We have an idea, that the problems happen, when more users is logged on and using Acrobat Reader. We're running the latest Adobe Reader DC.

Kind Regards

Kim

Hi,

Please Repair the  installation for the Reader  Program

Also please check after disabling the protected mode in the program using this step :-

Acrobat > Edit > preferences > Security (Enhanced) > uncheck the option for 'Enable Enhanced Security', Also set view documents in PDF/A Mode to Never (Edit > Preferences > Document ) , then OK.

Let me know if it helps

Regards,

Yatharth

Hi Yatharth

Thanks, will try it. Since its a terminal server, should it be done for each user?

Hello Kim,

If the installation is done on the server then there is not need to do on individual users.

Unless you have a different setup of the environment, where you have installed the app on end user's machine.

Tariq Dar.

Hi Tariq

It was actually nessesary to make the setup pr user on the terminal server

But it didn't Work. It seems that Adobe reader prints, but nothing happens.

Right now im having a look at the Print Processors, as covered in this article:

Hi Kim,

Are you experiencing this issue, no pages selected? If yes, are you able to reproduce on demand?

Regards,

Tariq Dar.

Hi Tariq

It actually doesn't say that. It just does nothing, when trying to print. But when You prin eg. 4-10 pages, You get a glimpse of a progressbar, that indicates that Adobe Reader is generating/creating print, when problem is there, You don't see that.

It happens to random users, so the problem can't actually be reproduced, unless the user allready has the problem. If the user is loged on, and has the problem, You can reproduce the problem each time You try to print the PDF.

Printer setup:

Printers GPO deployed from Print Manager on DC to Terminal server. Right now, We're using WinPrint Print Processor for as many printers as possible + using Driver isolation, dont use render on client.

Kind Regards

Kim

i have a customer experiencing the same issue, they actually get an error message that says "the document can't be printed" followed by "there were no pages selected."  like everyone else users cant print word docs, excel, web pages without issue. i have tried deleting re-adding the printers, updating the print drivers, but the problem gets reappearing sporadically. any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Hi There!

We have the same problem in terminal server 2012. In Default, everything is working fine, then random times users can't print pdf but word, excel, notepad etc. work fine, Not all users, only one user in time The only repair method is to delete the printer in his profile, and let the gpo (gpupdate /force) install the printer. Logout-login and working fine again. there is one visible difference in a printing widow, is the " print both sides on paper" doesn't show up. We tried everything drivers, adobe reinstall, change the printer deployment but the problem still occurs.

If the problem is up, when we try the "Print" , nothing hapenned, no event, no spool, nothing. The problem always show up in a default printer. Latest Reader DC

I hope you can say something.

Regards

Sándor

Hi Guys

Sorry for the late reply, seems I don't get email notification from Adobe forums.

I had to install the printers local on the ts, I could get it to Work that way - Never heard a thing from Adobe since i replied.

Everything else worked with deployed printers, but not PDF printing. I tried diferent PDF readers (FoxIt, Sumatra, PDF complete), they all had issues. I think the one that worked best was PDF Complete, but since it wasn't stable, I installed all printers local on TS with no GPO deploy). Not a very nice installation, but the only way to get it to Work permanently, unfortunately.

We have exactly the same problem.  Our terminal servers are running windows server 2016.  Same with our print server.  We are using GPO mapped printers.  We are using the latest version of Adobe Acrobat.  I just called Adobe support.  There is a know bug issue that depicts this problem exactly.  However, I'm waiting for a call back from them to get more information and timing for the bug fix.  I'll re-post once I hear back.

Hi David

Sounds great, looking forward to see what the Adobe Guys have to say. I've used a lot of time trying to get this to Work, but never got an answer. I could imagine, it is something between Microsoft and Adobe, since I could replicate similar problems with other PDF Readers. Still I must emphase that my problems was with Acrobat Reader, not Acrobat.

Anyway, thanks for picking it up with Adobe

PS My installation is still running as mentioned earlier in this thread

Kind Regards

Kim

Hi Kim,

I am going to implement a workaround solution since my users can’t wait any longer for Adobe to get this fixed.  On my terminal servers, I was going to install printers locally but mapped from the print server.  So, install printer A but with the configuration
printserver\printerA<file://printserver/printerA>.  Do you think that this will work or do I need to install the printers locally, bypassing the print server?

Thanks,

David Bristow

Hi David

I'll be straight with You - I can't remember trying that (but could imagine, I've tried it before installing printers locally on a TS). Its so long ago, I really don't remember, sorry

I can see one of the Adobe Guys wrote me, but I won't be able to pick up this case Again However I could Refer him to You if You want?

@Tariq Ahmad Dar, Adobe: We ran Server 2016 RDS/TS, Adobe Reader DC latest version (at my last post in this thread), Server 2016 DC with printers installed, deployed via GPO.

Off Tropic: I also have customers that have problems with Adobe Reader process RdrCEF.exe using up a lot of RAM and CPU power for multible users - Also in a TS enviroment, so be aware, that You could have challenges there to.

Kind Regards

Kim

Thanks for the feedback, Kim.  I’m still waiting for Adobe support to get back to me with a bug fix id.  However, I can’t wait for this as users are getting frustrated (and me too).

For now, I’ve installed another pdf reader which is working for printing.  For doing Acrobat tasks with pdf documents (OCR, combining files, etc) then I still have users do this in Acrobat but any printing has to be done in the alternate pdf reader (Foxit Reader).

Hey guys,

I actually have the same problem with my Windows 2016 Citrix environment.

What we experience is that, people call us and say they cannot print PDF files, the progress bar doesn't show up, and nothing happens.
They can print from Word, excel, mail just fine, but not PDF files. first I though it was their profile, and after giving them a new profile it worked, however, later we discovered that it might not be related to their profile, but it was the server, so giving them a new profile just gave me the illusion that fixed the problem, but after they logged on they most likely got on a new citrix server.

Anyway, the "only" temporary fix we found until now was to restart the citrix server, but that is highly inconvenient.
It seems if we open a PDF via Chrome, they can print it just fine, just not through Adobe reader.

Have you heard back from Adobe regarding this issue? 🙂

best regards

Daniel

We've got the excact same issue as you guys. 4x RDS 2016, not able to print anymore at some point and also high usage of RAM and CPU of Adobe RrdrCEF.exe. Very annoying. I assume there's still no answer from Adobe? Even not officially marked as known issue?

Hi All

davidd52442143 did Tariq Ahmad Dar contact You. Got PM from him, but since I can't use more time on this, I've asked him to grab a hold of You. But I acctually can't see he posted anyting here????

Kind Regards/Med Venlig Hilsen

Hi Kim,

Tariq emailed me.  However, I told him that I was already working with another tech support engineer in the same office, Chiyani Babbar.  I just emailed Chiyani to get an update on the bug fix.

Cheers,

David

Hello David, that sounds great. looking forward to hear what they conclude. 🙂

Mvh

@kim
