Timecode effect & timeToFrames() expression causes green cache playback bar not to update

AE Version: 23.2.0

OS: Windows 11

In my first comp with all the layers, if I turn on either the Timecode effect layer, or simply a text layer with this expression:

timeToFrames(thisLayer.sourceTime())

The green cache playback bar doesnt show. However, if I put these layers in their own comp, the green cache playback bar does work as expected.

@Rick Gerard of course. This is however pertaining to the green cached preview bar not showing, and not final output rendering.

Guide layers do not render.

So first I thought it was related to the Timecode effect/expression, but it seems I've narrowed it down to be whether a layer is set as a "Guide Layer". Enabling Guide Layer causes the green cached preview bar not to update.
